Canada Unveils Team for Alpine Junior World Ski Championships

Jeff Bell
Jocelyn McCarthy

Thirteen athletes have been named to the team that will represent Canada at the 2014 Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Jansa, Slovenia, from February 26 to March 6.

The championships feature top young ski talent from around the world, with athletes born between 1993 and 1997 competing for the podium in downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom and a team event; including Calgary's Jeff Bell and Spruce Grove's Jocelyn McCarthy.

"We have a very strong team, particularly in giant slalom and the speed disciplines," said Kip Harrington, head coach of the men's development team. "The competition will be tough. This is an unusually strong year, where there are several juniors from different nations who have scored World Cup points, won Europa Cup races and have been on the podium in a World Cup."

Volunteer Opportunity - Nor Am Finals

Alpine Canada is hosting both ladies and men's Nor Am Finals at Nakiska and COP from March 10 to 16, 2014. This is the highest level of competition in North America outside of the early season World Cup races. The top racers are vying for World Cup spots and some will have competed at the Sochi Olympics.

With two races running simultaneously at two different venues, many volunteers will be needed to stage safe and successful races. Alberta's most experienced race officials can be found in the leadership positions, making this a great place see the experts in action and learn some tricks to bring the expertise back to your own club's races. It is also where some of the country's most dedicated, knowledgeable and friendly volunteers can be found. They take pride in producing a competition venue that is of the highest standard, allowing the competitors to race to win!

Help is especially needed at the Ladies Slalom Races at COP on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 11 and 12.

Accommodation, meals and chance to see the best up and coming skiers in the world are all part of the package.

If you would like to be part of this exciting race, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Barb Wood at skiracevolunteer@shaw.ca for more information.

U18 Nationals Recap

"I want to congratulate our 31 athletes who represented our province exceptionally well at the Canadian Championship. The fact that Alberta captured nearly half of the overall top-5 positions over the last four days is a testament to the hard work of our athletes and really positive sign about the strength of our club system."

-Adam Hull, President, Alberta Alpine
