Happy Holidays! Christmas is just around the corner and the Guadalupe Day Celebrations culminated on Wednesday December 12th with lots of festivities and partying in the plaza Wednesday night following a big procession of Guadalupe floats, fireworks, cannons, bands playing and people dressed in costume for the event. Mass took place Wednesday evening with a big turn out of Catholic residents and the church was adorned with beautiful flowers. See Donna Day's photos of the week for images of the Guadalupe Day celebrations. Guadalupe Day marks the beginning of the Christmas season and from now until the 25th there will be many celebrations and parties to attend.  I hope everyone in Sayulita enjoys the holiday cheer in the sun, sand and surf! And may you enjoy the holidays with friends and family wherever you may be this season.

Christmas Break:  El Sayulero will be taking the week off of Friday December 21st to give our contributors a Christmas break, and will be back on Friday December 28th with a special New Year's Eve edition saying goodbye to 2012 and welcoming the new year.

Thank you for reading El Sayulero.

Feliz Navidad!

Question of the Week: What is your favorite cultural tradition celebrated in Sayulita?

By Nicki Cooper

"Christmas! Well because it's my birthday and when I was a child we would gather together, the whole family, all of the them, cousins, brothers, uncles...all of them. And we had a Christmas celebration."

Y hacemos posada."

-Belem Colin, Yah Yah Cafe, Sayulita

Sayulita Says Goodbye to Part-Time Resident

Maria Last December 3rd, with her luggage ready to come to Sayulita, Maria Paz Apellaniz passed away in San Sebastian, Spain, her other residence. She was a "winter" citizen of Sayulita since 2000, a place she loved with all her heart, where she enjoyed her house, the beach, the town and especially the people. To all who knew her, she leaves a legacy of happiness, joy, courage, ability and fearlessness to be remembered forever. On Saturday December 15th at noon, there will be a mass at the Sayulita church in her memory, with mariachis singing the songs she liked and everyone dressed in bright colors. She hated black.  Rest in peace.

Guadalupe Day Fiestas

 By Nicki Cooper

It's been a week of cannon fire, parades, fireworks, food, laughter, and rejoicing in the church, the plaza, and the community. The final day, Wednesday the 12th, gave a full party starting with the church all day and till the wee hours of the morning with late night revelers. The last week has all been in honor of the patron saint of Mexico, the Virgin of Guadalupe. Read more

The End of the World or the Beginning?

A day on the beach

December 21st, 2012 is right around the corner, and I must admit this article will not give you conclusive fact on the end of the world, but it will give you tons of events coming up to the final or perhaps the first day of the rest of our lives! Human Unity 2012 is a group of people who believe now is the time for change.. More

Mas

A True Adventurous Environmentalist
Tracie Willis, 1993
"Here's to freedom, cheers to art. Here's to having an excellent adventure and may the stopping never start." -Jason Mraz.  This certainly seems to be the philosophy of Tracie Willis, ChocoBanana's former owner. Never one to conform to the "shoulds" in life, Tracie has chosen a life of adventure over mundane predictability. Here is her fascinating story of how destiny brought her to Sayulita, and how she became one of its most enduring icons:  More

Bite This: Steak is King at D'luscious Bistro

D'luscious Bistro is the new spot in town right off the square and this is good news for steak lovers. Chef Darrell Taylor hails from the mid-west, so he goes to great effort to get really good steaks for his bistro from Sonora. He only picks meat that comes from lowland grazing cattle-more tender, he notes, and with the first bite you can enjoy how tender the steaks are. More

Mas

Photo of the Week:  The Virgen of Guadalupe

Photos by Donna Day

Last week (and this) every night had a different virgin from each neighborhood in a procession to the plaza and church to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe. After shooting pretty much every night, these are my favorites, ending with the torch carried by boys running all the way to Sayulita from the town of the original sighting of the virgin.  More Photos
