School News

From the Principal

Last year, Woodside High School staff and the Shared Decision Making Council (SDMC) worked on the issue of student stress as reported in data points from student surveys and student focus groups.

One data point came through the annual MyVoice survey, as part of the 8 Conditions of Student Success, was that an average of 34% of students agreed or strongly agreed with the statement:  "I can usually complete my after school activities and my homework in time to get a good night's sleep."

I don't have a pre-ordained solution for decreasing student stress, but I do want a balanced student experience in high school. WHS already has meaningful practices in place that promote student balance:
  • Finals taken before the winter break and no assignments between the semesters.
  • Block schedule where students are preparing for three classes per night instead of six per night.
  • 60% of students begin school at 9:00 am, not 8 am
I believe that the best and most-meaningful practices will come out of discussions on this campus, which began last year, and I invite you to two parent education events.

Register below:

"Screenagers" film, on WHS campus for free, Thur, Sep 29, 7 p.m., PAC

"Media Rules" panel discussion, on Stanford campus for $10, Fri, Sep 30, 7 p.m., Memorial Auditorium

Club Rush

Leadership will be hosting Club Rush during lunch on Thursday, September 8. At this event school clubs and organizations will be allowed to set up tables to promote their group in the quad. This event is a great opportunity for students to learn when and where groups meet as well as what they do.

CSF Application Due Friday, September 9

California Scholarship Federation (CSF) promotes and recognizes students with above-average grades. To become a lifetime member, a student must submit an application and meet the eligibility requirements for four semesters or more. A point system specified in the CSF State By-Laws establishes membership requirements. Benefits for lifetime members include recognition at WHS Senior Awards Night and in the WHS Graduation program.

Applications and course lists are available in the College&Career Center (D9) or online here. Students must submit their application forms for the second semester of 2015-16 to D9 by Friday, September 9. The submitted application packet must include:
  • Completed CSF application
  • Copy of the previous semester's report card or transcript.
Contact Zorina Matavulj at [email protected] with questions.

What makes for a GREAT party? Well, that would be an opportunity to hang with friends, old and new, and support a worthwhile cause all at once!  Come and meet your fellow Wildcat parents.  The Woodside High School Foundation still has a few openings left at these upcoming events:

Wine Tasting and Food Pairing Party - Saturday, September 10

Booster Ticket Program

Are you getting ready for the Wildcats' first football home game on this week? Purchase your Boosters Ticket Program here and you will have four (4) tickets to all football and basketball home games for the 2016-17 seasons.

Please note that your will NOT receive the tickets home, but your name will be placed on the list at the gate.

New Committee Needed for Senior Fashion Show

As a Woodside tradition, the Athletic Booster Organization (ABO) has been running the Spring Fashion Show for all seniors to participate in. The ABO board has not been able to find a new chair or even a committee for the 2017 Senior Fashion.

This long-standing Woodside tradition for the senior class simply will NOT happen without a committed group of volunteer running it, so the ABO board has decided to offer up this event for any other group on campus to run it.

Anyone can run this event, and all proceeds would benefit their chosen WHS group, NOT the ABO.

Please consider carrying the torch for this event. If interested, please contact us at https://woodsideathletics.org/

From the Weekly Update Editors

  • The deadline for submissions is now Wednesday at 4 PM for publication on Sunday evening.
  • If you are one of our regular contributors, you will be receiving an email every Monday night reminding you to send in your news. If you want to be added to the "regulars" distribution list, please email us at [email protected].
  • Please keep articles short and focused. Include the event, date, time, location, and contact info, including URL if available.
  • Please do not send attachments: send article content in the body of the email. If you send us a flyer, we will include it only as a link to a downloadable document, so the readers will have to click to open and read it. They probably won't, so again: do not send us flyers.
  • Please spell check and proofread submissions.
  • The PTSA Weekly Update Editorial Team reserves the right to edit or reject submissions.
  • No special or additional editions of Weekly Update will be sent out unless the subject matter impacts the ENTIRE school population. Such special editions are exclusively at the discretion of the Weekly Update editors, the PTSA President, and the school administration.
