SCHOOL NEWS
For Frosh parents from Principal Burbank
Freshmen will have their first TRANSITIONS lesson Mon, Aug 24 (B day) or Tue, Aug 25 (A day) in the Social Studies Living Skills classrooms. The theme of the first lesson is building a supportive community. WHS has trained 114 peer leader upperclassmen who will go into 14 class periods this semester and 2-4 classes next semester. There are about eight peer leaders per classroom. The trained peer leaders will talk about supporting peers, friends, and family members. Parents, you could ask your frosh student what he/she learned about other students in the Life Skills class and how to support the familiar middle school friends or new high school friends while at school.
Lunchtime Intra-Murals
Lunchtime intra-murals begin on Tuesday, September 8. Staff-supervised four days a week in two locations: 1) Bradley Field for flag football, soccer, track open for those who want to run and 2) behind new gym on softball fields and basketball courts for basketball, baseball, and ping pong. No intra-murals on minimum days, study weeks, or finals. Students will hear intramural info on daily announcements in a few days.

PTSA
Welcome Back Wildcats!
It was wonderful to see so many families at Arena Check-In! The PTSA welcome table was very busy meeting, greeting and reminding people to renew their PTSA membership....remember PTSA membership, unlike a PTO, requires that we collect a membership fee to belong to the state wide organization that provides our insurance and financial accounting controls. If you have not already joined, please do by going to this link:
There are both forms for downloading as well as a very simple online form that links to PayPal. It is very quick and easy and much appreciated! Please consider making an extra donation to the general fund as this helps fund our programming for teachers, students and parents.
eScrip is dropped by Safeway- Safeway has dropped out of the eScrip program completely. We knew this was coming when Safeway was acquired by a large investment company and now we know we will be losing the $6,000-7,000.00 a year we passively collect from eScrip. Please consider making that extra donation to when you complete your membership. Teacher luncheons and mini-grants, student scholarships, and our excellent parent education series all rely on the money we have had from eScrip...we need to fill that gap.
First PTSA Meeting of the school year: Tuesday September 1, 2015 in the MUR Conference Room. All are welcome to attend!
Have a great year and feel free to contact me anytime! You can find my contact information in the school directory which is located securely as a document in the School Loop program, if it is not yet there it will be by September 1st!
Again, Go Wildcats! Charmaine McCrystal PTSA President

Shared Decision Making Council
Step Up and Apply to the Shared Decision Making Council (SDMC)
Shared Decision Making Council (SDMC) is a long standing feature (in its second decade!) of the shared leadership of Woodside High School. It merges Site Council with a larger decision making body of about 24 people comprised of students, teachers, staff, parents, one community member, and the principal. SDMC members commit to meeting twice monthly from 4 - 6 pm on the 2nd and 4th Mondays in the MUR conference room, with occasional date changes due to holidays. In addition to the meeting time commitment, there is occasional ad-hoc committee meetings that complete the work of school-wide initiatives such as The Big Read or College Day, for example.
The SDMC is taking applications to fill several positions. If you have a passion for broader school issues and have the time to participate, please consider sending an email to Principal Burbank at dburbank@seq.org , include any pertinent information as to why you might be passionate about participating.

Woodside Parent Education Series 2015-16 FALL SCHEDULE
Wednesday, September 16
M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES and KEPLER'S BOOKS PRESENT: "Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain" An evening with Dr. Daniel J. Siegel Wednesday, September 16 Event starts at 7:30 pm - Doors open at 6:30 p.m. M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC) The Peninsula Arts & Letters and Kepler's Books is pleased to bring internationally acclaimed author and UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel to the M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC) to present his new work: Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain.
This special evening is presented in partnership with the M-A Parent Education Series and Menlo-Atherton High School.
Dr. Siegel will share the exciting neuroscience behind the heightened social, emotional and creative energy that drives teen behavior showing parents how to turn one of the most challenging developmental periods in their children's lives into one of the most rewarding. Between the ages of 12 to 24, the brain changes in important and, at times, challenging ways. In "Brainstorm," Dr. Siegel dispels a number of commonly held myths about adolescent behavior and demonstrates that during these years children learn vital skills, such as how to leave home and enter the larger world, connect deeply with others, and safely experiment and take risks.
Drawing on important new research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology, Siegel explores exciting ways in which understanding how the brain functions can improve the lives of adolescents, making their relationships more fulfilling and less lonely and distressing on both sides of the generational divide. Event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. Kepler's Books will offer sales of Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain.

Welcome back to school! I trust you all had a wonderful summer and are ready to get back into the Drama of life: ACTING and TECHING and STAGING and supporting the Drama Program in a multitude of ways. If you've ever wondered how the sets are designed and built, how the costume changes are done so well, how the props are found and where they're stored, how we get such great costumes for all our performances, then come to the Woodside High School Drama Booster Club's Open House Welcome on Wednesday, August 26 at 7:00 pm in the PAC. We'll introduce you to as many of our volunteers and staff supporters as we can AND give you a tour of the PAC, so you can see all the behind the scenes stuff that makes theater happen! Who knows, you might just find an outlet for your own creative expression and become an active member of the best Booster Club on campus! :) We look forward to seeing you in the PAC on the 26th.
