How Idling Your Car Negatively Effects Your Kids
Dear Parents,
We are students in AP Environmental Science, and we are writing to you today regarding an issue that is very important to us. We have all been in the Woodside parking lot before and during pickup time. There are lines of cars stretching around campus, especially in the student lot. When you are picking up your child after school, please turn your car engine off while you are waiting. Idling your car can cost you lots of money and has costly effects on the environment. Did you know that idling your car for two minutes wastes the same amount of gas as driving for a mile? For every ten minutes that your engine is off, you are saving one pound of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere. We realize that there are lots of parents waiting to pick up their kids, and that causes big traffic back-ups, and if all of those parents were to be idling their cars, that would cause significant amounts of smog. Please help us keep our campus air clean. Turning off your engine reduces air pollution, and saves your wallet. You can help the movement, and become part of the anti-idling campaign. To learn more, you can visit: http://www.epa.gov/cleanschoolbus/antiidling.htm.
True facts: -
Ten seconds of idling uses more gas than turning off and restarting your engine
-
Idling for an hour uses between ⅕ to 7/10 of a gallon of gas
-
An idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling 32 mph.
We think that this is a relatively simple problem to solve. Posting this letter will help to raise awareness, and change the amount of pollutants emitted on our school campus. Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, Anika Rohlfes, Colin Endo, Michael Mendelsohn, Kirk Arena, and Sebastien Kister
