SCHOOL NEWS

From Principal Burbanksurvey

For the last four years, parents have been invited to provide anonymous feedback using the MyVoice survey connected to our 8 Conditions of Student Success.  The 15-minutes online survey can be taken on your smart phone or computer.  Your feedback gives me valuable qualitative information about your experience as a parent on campus and about the education your student is experiencing.  The year-to-year data to show what is improving, maintaining, or sinking is invaluable to me in setting priorities for campus.  As an example, I've used your recent feedback to determine parent education topics and to increase the number of guidance information nights.  Thank you for taking the time!  -Principal Burbank

 Athletes of the Week
Varsity Athlete: Lexi Riccardi, Junior
Sport: Softball

Coaches' Lens (Justine Fortes): "Alexi has played in a major role in helping us win. She stole home for the win against Monte Vista in a 1-0 game, hit a game winning double that sent in the winning run against St. Ignatius, and has made game defining plays and catches as our catcher."

Lexi Riccardi made the transition from gymnastics to softball at the age of nine and has not looked back since. Playing as a team is what she loves most about softball and she was heavily influenced by former Wildcat Christina Patton (who is currently playing collegiately in Colorado Springs) to pursue the sport in earnest along with her father, Anthony, a Woodside alum as well. Lexi has led the Wildcats to a strong start, playing the key position of catcher, a spot that requires her to be the "leader of the infield and always active." Looking to toward the season, Lexi sees a three way race for first place in the competitive 'Bay' Division between Woodside, Carlmont, and Hillsdale. Lexi aspires to play softball in college, her dream school is Texas A&M, and eventually attend veterinary school. The 'Lone Star' state would also fit well with her summer time passion of riding horses (although she admits to loving all animals), and her favorite meal, steak (cooked medium rare), with a 'loaded baked potato."

Athlete: Paige Blackwell, Freshman
Sport: Softball

Coaches' Lens (Alexa Daines): "Freshman Paige Blackwell has seventy-three strikeouts in her first five games as a Woodside Wildcat. Blackwell is setting the tone early with a 5-0 preseason record. Offensively Blackwell is hitting .364 with 4 RBI and 2 Triples so far this season."

This bubbly, outgoing, hard working freshman stands to have a very promising softball career at Woodside as she has taken this season by storm. Although new to Woodside and her teammates, Paige is a veteran of the softball diamond, having played since she was five years old. The fiery frosh has set a very straight forward individual athletic goal, "keep striking people out." As a team (which is one of the main reasons Paige loves the sport), she anticipates the Wildcats will "do extremely well and challenge for a league title." Although highly self-motivated on the playing field and in the classroom, Paige says her mom (a highly respected middle school PE teacher), is a big influence on her. Like so many outstanding athletes Paige hopes to play at a four year level, and when her softball career is over, to be a "writer or a lawyer." Given the choice of meals, she would opt for a "burger, fries and chocolate shake."

San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week: Woodside's Kaitlyn Grech

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Grech for making the news!

"It's softball season again. And Kaitlyn Grech isn't wasting any time. The Woodside sophomore's first full week of varsity softball was one to remember. The Wildcats went on a five-game winning streak starting with last Tuesday's 1-0 win over Monta Vista."

"The Mask You Live In"
Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University

Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Performing Arts Center (PAC)

The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question: Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men and society at large? Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.

"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain."

- Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, and Producer of "The Mask You Live In" and CEO of The Representation Project

Tickets are free, but advance registration is requested. Parents, high school students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!
