Needed immediately:
  • Hospitality Chairperson shadow who will work to transition and take over independently with the January 2016 "grab and go" lunches for teachers and staff;
  • Season of Sharing (SOS) Chairperson(s)
  • January 2016 Open House Co-Chairperson who will move to chairperson in 2017;
  • PTSA Board open positions for 2015-16: vice-president, treasurer, historian.

Athletes of the Week - Week of February 12

Alumni Athlete: Kiola Mahoni, Class of 2012
Sport: Football

Kiola Mahoni, class of 2012, signed a letter of intent to play football at University of Louisville this past week. Kiola has received a full scholarship to play offensive guard for the Cardinals, choosing the Kentucky school over Mississippi State and University of Cincinnati. Mahoni has played the past two years for the College of San Mateo, where he has been a standout at guard and defensive end. The 6'3", 305 pound Mahoni impressed the Cardinal coaching staff with his physicality and athleticism. Although weighing more than 300 pounds, Mahoni runs the 40 yard dash in less than five seconds and will be able to pull around the perimeter for Louisville's spread offense. The humble, soft spoken Mahoni admits he is "excited and looking forward to living on the campus in the athletic dorms." While the other schools offered Mahoni full scholarships as well, they "wanted me to commit without visiting the schools, Louisville allowed me to take a recruiting trip before signing and I really liked it there." Although Mahoni will look forward to earning his degree, he wouldn't mind following in the footsteps of Woodside and CSM alum Julian Edelman who is one of 17 CSM players or coaches to earn a Super Bowl ring. "I'm just very happy to have this opportunity to play big time college football; it's something I have been working really hard for since playing at Woodside." Congrats Kiola!!!

Athlete: Thomas Gammer, Sophomore
Sport: Boys' JV Basketball
Coaches' Lens (Roderick Harrison): "In his second game back from injury Thomas came off the bench to score 10 points to help us beat Carlmont last Friday. Thomas has been a spark for the team since he has come back from injury; he brings the fire which fuels the desire, and with a name like that you know he's clutch."
Thomas Gammer sets high objectives as he models his play after the Golden State Warriors phenomenal guard, Stephan Curry. He was pleased that the JV team "beat Carlmont twice this season", but "ultimately our goal as a program must be to never lose to Carlmont, Sequoia or M-A, so beating Carlmont both times is really just the start." That goal will begin "this off season as we really work hard in the spring and through summer league." Thomas will be happy to play varsity next year, looking to play the "off guard position." Thomas works hard in the classroom as well, and hopes to eventually attend "any UC school and major in business with an emphasis on marketing." He admits to being something of "Netflix junkie", and enjoying "almost any movie." His dream meal is a steak, cooked medium, with a baked potato.

WOODSIDE PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

"The Mask You Live In"
Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University

Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Performing Arts Center (PAC)

The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question: Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men and society at large?

Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.

Woodside Parent Education Series events are free of charge, sponsored by the WHS PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.

Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be provided.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at [email protected] or 650-868-0590.

SUHSD PARENT EDUCATION MINI-SERIES

Teenage Risky Behaviors

Join us for a pro-active Parent Education Mini-Series to address teenage risky behaviors. These targeted workshops will focus on adolescent drug and alcohol addiction, e-cigarettes, distracted driving, and sexual health.

"Distracted Driving Parent Workshop" with Impact Teen Drivers
(California Highway Patrol)

Thursday, March 12, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Sequoia Union High School District Office
Birch Room
480 James Avenue, Redwood City

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per mile driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults.

In this workshop, you will learn about:
  • Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
  • Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
  • The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
  • How YOU can stop the  #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at  [email protected] or (650) 868-0590, or Karen Li, MD, Wellness Coordinator at [email protected].

Parent Education Series events are free and open to SUHSD parents, faculty/staff and community members. The Parent Education Mini-Series is sponsored by the Sequoia Healthcare District and the Sequoia Union High School District.

* Things you can do at home to help your child develop a healthy body image
* Suggestions for positive ways to reduce stress (e.g., yoga, mindfulness)

THE M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author

Monday, April 6, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."

That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.

Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. He is the author of two best-selling books, the memoir "Born Round" and "Ambling into History," a chronicle of Bush's rise to the presidency. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC and other networks.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members.

Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at [email protected].

HOW: Your child must be registered in advance and bring their pre-screening packet and permission/release forms to the event. Please register and find forms at http://viaheartproject.org/register-sequoia/.

WHEN: Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 9am to 3pm
