DONATE USING PAYPAL
If you haven't already donated to the Class of 2017's Safe & Sober Grad Night through PayPal, now's the time to do it!

Please note that a donation made via your bank goes farther than using a credit card, which gets a cut from the proceeds. You can always use the form in the donation letter that was recently mailed out. If you didn't receive the direct donation campaign letter, please email: whsparents2017@gmail.com
Have a great week!

SPORTS NEWS
Girls Varsity Soccer PAL Bay Division Champions!
Congratulations to Varsity Girls' Soccer team for clinching their 3rd straight PAL Bay Division Championship, they are currently 10-0-1 in league, 14-1-1 overall, a true juggernaut!
Athletes of the Week - Week of February 6
Varsity Sport: Wrestling
Alma Covarrubias, Junior
Coaches' Lens (Roger Tonna): "As captain, Alma led the girls team and got us our first win of the day at CCS. Alma is a very technical wrestler who is patient and waits for her opponent to make a mistake to capitalize. In wrestling, or any combat sport, the winner is usual the one who takes advantage of the mistake of their opponent. Alma is known for finishing off her opponents with a Head-and-Arm throw!"
Alma has done well this year, tying for fourth place in the CCS along with her fellow Wildcats. However, she is setting her sites a little higher for her senior year, with the goal of finishing in the top three and qualification for the state tournament. She loves wrestling for the "commitment it requires one to make along with its strength development." Inspired by her boyfriend, a former wrestler at Woodside, Alma hopes to continue wrestling in college where she can study psychology or business. With her free time she practices king fu and she loves her mom's tacos.
Kathy Peraza, Senior
(Tonna) "Even though Kathy is a first year wrestler, in the short time she has been in the sport she has made big waves defeating opponents with much more experience. Unlike Alma, Kathy is an 'In your face', aggressive, brawler-style wrestler. Using her strength and aggression, she forces her opponents to make a mistake to win her matches.
As a first year wrestler Kathy's only regret is that "I should have done it sooner." Since she is defined as a "brawler style" of wrestler, it's not surprising that Kathy simply "loves beating the other person". She finds talks by the Sequoia Coach J.P. "particularly inspiring" (Woodside and Sequoia often share space and practice together). This senior hopes to be accepted into Sacramento State to study criminology, and eventually be a detective. She interviewed Renel Brooks, the Giants' PA announcer, for her SEP and her favorite meal is steak with mashed potatoes.
Bryana Yarbourough, Senior
(Tonna) "Another first year wrestler, Bryana didn't mature into the sport until much later in the season. When she did though, she became an asset to the varsity line-up. Using her speed and aggression, Bryana defeated distinguished wrestlers at CCS; winning one of her matches within forty-five seconds."
Besides being in her inaugural year for wrestling, Bryana has never played a sport prior to this year. However, she has developed some strong opinions, and feels that "winning and getting your hand raised" is the best part of the sport. She has been inspired by Coach Tonna for his "dedication to the team", and with her spare time she "sleeps, because wrestling is so ridiculously hard." Bryana may continue wrestling in college and she has set her objectives high, applying to Harvard, Cornell and Duke, hoping to major in criminology or sociology.

"The Mask You Live In," Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University
Thursday, February 26, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Sequoia High School, Carrington Hall
The Sequoia Parent Education Series is proud to offer a premier showing of the new documentary film from Jennifer Siebel Newsom and The Representation Project, The Mask You Live In. Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives. The Mask You Live In asks the important question: As a society, how are we failing our boys?
"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain."
- Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, & Producer of "The Mask You Live In" and CEO of The Representation Project
Sequoia Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Sequoia High School Education Foundation, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be provided.
For more information, contact Charlene Margot, The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650-868-0590. For Spanish, contact Mayela Ramirez, Parent Center Coordinator, 650-369-1411 x 63105.
SUHSD PARENT EDUCATION MINI-SERIES
Teenage Risky Behaviors
Join us for a pro-active Parent Education Mini-Series to address teenage risky behaviors. These targeted workshops will focus on adolescent drug and alcohol addiction, e-cigarettes, distracted driving, and sexual health.
"Distracted Driving Parent Workshop" with Impact Teen Drivers
(California Highway Patrol)
Thursday, March 12, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Sequoia Union High School District Office
Birch Room
480 James Avenue, Redwood City
Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per mile driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults.
In this workshop, you will learn about:
- Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
- Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
- The Rules of the Road for teen drivers
- How YOU can stop the #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.
Parent Education Series events are free and open to SUHSD parents, faculty/staff and community members. The Parent Education Mini-Series is sponsored by the Sequoia Healthcare District and the Sequoia Union High School District.
THE M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author
Monday, April 6, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."
That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.
Frank Bruni has been an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since June 2011, focusing on a range of subjects including higher education. In two decades at The Times, he has also been the paper's chief restaurant critic, its Rome bureau chief, a White House correspondent, and the lead reporter covering George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. He is the author of two best-selling books, the memoir "Born Round" and "Ambling into History," a chronicle of Bush's rise to the presidency. He has appeared frequently as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC and other networks.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members.
Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.
For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net.

COMMUNITY NEWS
YOUTH HEART SCREENING EVENT -
WE SCREEN YOUR TEEN FOR FREE!
WHO: 13 to 19 year olds in the Sequoia Union High School District
WHY: It is estimated 1 in 500 school-aged children suffer an undiagnosed heart defect, which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death. A typical annual physical does not screen for advanced heart abnormalities.
WHAT: Screenings take less than 30 minutes (wait times may vary) and include a health history questionnaire review, an EKG test, and if warranted, an echocardiogram. The entire process is non-invasive-no needles or x-ray exposure- and we ensure each teen's confidentiality, privacy, and individual modesty is respected throughout all aspects of the screening.
HOW: Your child must be registered in advance and bring their pre-screening packet and permission/release forms to the event. Please register and find forms at http://viaheartproject.org/register-sequoia/.
WHEN: Sunday, March 22, 2015 from 9am to 3pm
WHERE: Sequoia High School: 1201 Brewster Avenue, Redwood City, CA 94062
Our goal is to prevent youth deaths from sudden cardiac arrest and establish Heart Safe campuses.
Any questions, please call 800-284-0125 or email
