Open House
September is marked by Back to School Night; spring is marked by Open House. In this case, "spring" is in February, since Open House is on Thursday, February 5th. The Open House is centered around our 8 Conditions of Student Success -- the work we do with the Quaglia Institute. February's "spring" date is by teacher request to touch base with parents before the final quarter begins so that academic arrows can be tilted upward. And remember that the next day, Friday, February 6, is a minimum day.
As last year, the annual open house will start with food trucks in the quad at 5:00 pm (weather permitting) and will be followed by open classrooms with teacher availability and department and student presentations in different areas on campus. Look for student dance groups in the gym, student work displays in the PAC lobby, robotics demoes in the MUR - just to name three. The classroom and performance portion of the evening is from 6:30 - 8:00 pm, but you're not on an every 10-minute rotation. Pick your student's teachers you want to visit at a more leisurely pace than Back to School Night. And join me and our architects in the MUR at 6:00 pm for a session about the bond and the construction to take place on campus beginning next year.
In addition, the treasurer's office in D-5 will be open to accept payment for AP tests from 5 - 8 pm.

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
The Well-Balanced Student with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success
Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m. M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.
Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments.
In this presentation, you will learn:
- How students today are coping-or not-with the academic pressure they face
- Ways you can reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school
- Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child
Tickets are going fast, so sign up today!
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.
SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!
Spanish interpretation will be available. |

SPORTS NEWS
Athletes of the Week - Week of January 23
Varsity Athletes: Kyle Sanchez, Senior
Sport: Boy's Soccer
Coaches' Lens (Darrell Ringman): "Tonight's (v. Sequoia) come-from-behind performance was such an amazing, team effort, it's hard to extract one individual performance from all the others to praise an individual player of the game. It is a bit of sweet revenge to snare a point when similar points have been snatched from our grasp. But that said it's equally unfair to NOT recognize the unrelenting effort of one player who, with great sportsmanship, attitude, leadership and results continues to role model a standard for performance."
Kyle Sanchez is an athlete that cannot imagine much outside of soccer. He spent his freshman year at an academy program in Brazil to grow his skills before coming to Woodside (he still speaks Portuguese). Kyle hopes to play in college (perhaps at UCSB), but he will continue to play the sport at any level as long as possible. His major influence has been his father, who still plays in adult leagues. Kyle believes the Wildcats still have a "good shot to make the CCS playoffs - we just have to keep winning." While winning is important, Kyle emphasizes the best component of soccer is "playing with your friends," and the "relaxing" nature of the sport. Although he is not sure about his long term goals or a career, he was very adamant about his favorite meal: beef stroganoff.
 Athlete: Fallon Falore, Sophomore
Sport: Girls' JV Soccer
Coaches' Lens (Head Coach Oscar Avendano): "Getting to know and coach Fallon has been a pleasure the past two years. She is an exceptional soccer player and a very positive team leader. She has always taken on a leadership role for her teammates on the field. She is very respectful to her teammates, the opposition and coaches and this is why she wears the captain band around her arm. She showed her skills this past Thursday against Burlingame, leading the team with 4 goals." This 10th grader is a rarity in today's high school - a three sport athlete! Fallon, who also plays volleyball and competes in track (she is a sprinter), has been a dominating force in soccer. A major contributor to her growth and success has been the "constructive criticism" she receives from her club coach, Jeff Beicher. She is very pleased with the JV team (currently in first place), as they have been getting "better and better each game," and their progress has been helped along by "great coaches." Fallon has been playing soccer since kindergarten and the competitive club level since third grade. Although she will consider playing in college, her main priority is "to always stay active and do a sport." As another long term goal Fallon hopes to attend UC Berkeley or UC San Diego and work in public relations. Her family has chickens, so she enjoys the fresh eggs, but her favorite meal is a "filet mignon cooked medium well." ____________________________________
