SCHOOL NEWS
Aspirations Day at Woodside
Last week, students experienced the third of four Aspiration Periods based on the 8 Conditions of Student Success, designed to build connectedness between our students and staff. By choosing from many activities, 4th period teachers and students played Jeopardy, pirate deck, selfies, web name game, and shapeshifters. Ask your teenager how they participated in last Wednesday's activity.

Pennies for Patients
Woodside is in the middle of it's annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Jars for each grade level will be set in the middle of the quad at lunch until Thursday, February 5. The objective is for students to drop as many pennies as possible into the jar belonging to their grade level to earn points. Students from other grade levels can also drop other coins into an opposing grade's jar to deduct points from their total. Pennies are worth +1, nickels -5, dimes -10, and quarters -25. All the money raised from the competition will go toward the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. The winning grade level will receive a prize. Please encourage your students to participate and support both their class and a worthy cause!

From Principal Burbank
September is marked by Back to School Night; spring is marked by Open House. In this case, "spring" is in February, since Open House is on Thursday, February 5th. The Open House is centered around our 8 Conditions of Student Success -- the work we do with the Quaglia Institute. February's "spring" date is by teacher request to touch base with parents before the final quarter begins so that academic arrows can be tilted upward. And remember that the next day, Friday, February 6, is a minimum day.
As last year, the annual open house will start with food trucks in the quad at 5:00pm (weather permitting) and will be followed by open classrooms with teacher availability and department and student presentations in different areas on campus. Look for student dance groups in the gym, student work displays in the PAC lobby, robotics demoes in the MUR - just to name three. The classroom and performance portion of the evening is from 6:30 - 8:00 pm, but you're not on an every 10-minute rotation. Pick your student's teachers you want to visit at a more leisurely pace than Back to School Night. And join me and our architects in the MUR at 6:00 pm for a session about the bond and the construction to take place on campus beginning next year.
In addition, the treasurer's office in D-5 will be open to accept payment for AP tests from 5 - 8 pm.

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
The Well-Balanced Student with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success
Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m. M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.
Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments.
In this presentation, you will learn:
- How students today are coping-or not-with the academic pressure they face
- Ways you can reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school
- Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child
Tickets are going fast, so sign up today!
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.
SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!
Spanish interpretation will be available. |

SPORTS NEWS
Athletes of the Week - Week of January 16
Varsity Athletes: WHS Cheer Team
Sport: Varsity Cheer
Coaches' Lens (Jessica DiSanto): "The team did exceptionally well at the Regional competition on Saturday taking home not only a bid to Nationals, but also First Place! The coaching staff could not be more proud of these ladies."
Congratulations to these hard working athletes who are headed for the national competition in Anaheim. All of these young ladies love cheer for its team atmosphere, competitive nature and the support they give to the school. Given the time commitment to the sport, which is filled year round with practices, competitions and performances six days a week, these ladies have little time for much else besides school - but all of them hope to continue cheering at the four year level. Great job ladies!!!!
They are the best out of the Magnificent Seven that competed! Click here to see the video.
 Athlete: Matt Hennefarth, Junior
Sport: Boys' JV Basketball
Coaches' Lens (Head Coach Roderick Harrison): "Matt is a captain for our team and a leader on and off the floor. He is our defensive stopper and also leads our team inscoring. He averages more than 17 points a game and is a major contributor to our two game win streak."
Matt is a relative newcomer to basketball, having only played since his freshman year at Woodside. Prior to becoming a Wildcat he played soccer and baseball but decided he "wanted to try something new" in the winter. He believes the success of this year's JV squad has been the team's ability to "find each other" and "playing as a unit." To improve the JV squad needs to work on its defense, while individually Matt would like to "be more effective off the dribble." Hennefarth will play baseball this spring but in ten years he sees himself either as a computer engineer or working toward his doctorate in engineering. He's been inspired to follow this career by taking AP Computer Science at Woodside, a class he finds to be "very interesting." He hopes to attend University of San Diego eventually and possibly learn to surf; for a favorite meal Matt loves the pot stickers at 'Yat Sing'.
SMJ Honor Roll for Girls Soccer
Jilliene Aguilera, Woodside girls' soccer. The senior striker pushed her season goal total to an even dozen with five goals and two assists in two Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division wins last week. She scored a first-half hat trick on her way to a four-goal performance in a 6-1 win over Aragon and followed that with a goal in a 6-0 win over Half Moon Bay. She also had a helper in each match. Jilliene has been on the honor roll two weeks in a row! Full article here.
Sailing for Woodside
WHS freshmen sailors Joseph Politi and Tyler Davis competed for WHS in the NorCal #6 Regatta at the Richmond Yacht Club on January 10. They placed third out of 37 high school teams competing from all over the Bay area, including San Francisco, Marin, Sacramento and Santa Cruz counties. Go Wildcats!
