 Pennies for Patients

Woodside is beginning its annual Pennies for Patients fundraiser starting
Tuesday, January 20 (the day we get back from the three-day weekend). Jars for each grade level will be set in the middle of the quad at lunch until Thursday, February 5. The objective is for students to drop as many pennies as possible into the jar belonging to their grade level to earn points. Students from other grade levels can also drop other coins into an opposing grade's jar to deduct points from their total. Pennies are worth +1, nickels -5, dimes -10, and quarters -25. All the money raised from the competition will go toward the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. The winning grade level will receive a prize. Please encourage your students to participate and support both their class and a worthy cause!

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

The Well-Balanced Student
with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success

Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.

Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments.

In this presentation, you will learn:

How students today are coping-or not-with the academic pressure they face
Ways you can reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school
Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child

Tickets are going fast, so sign up today!

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.

SPORTS NEWS

Jillian Aguilera                  Kayla Hart

Athletes of the Week - Week of January 9

Varsity Athlete: Jillian Aguilera, Junior
Sport: Girls' Varsity Soccer
Coaches' Lens (Head Coach-Jose Navarette): "Jillian Aguilera has played exceptionally well this year, and last Tuesday was a great example of her phenomenal play as she scored four goals against Aragon. Jillian is in her third season on the varsity and there is no limit to what she can do on the soccer field."

Jillian Aguilera has proven herself to be a leader and elite performer on one of the most successful athletic programs at Woodside:  Girls' Varsity Soccer.  Despite their past success (two consecutive appearances in the CCS finals), Jill says it's important they "take one game at a time", and while always trying to win a championship (be it PAL or CCS), they must continue to grow as a team.  Jill receives a tremendous amount of support from her mom, who helps to manage her club team and "signs her up for everything".  The talented Aguilera has numerous colleges courting her already, however she has made a verbal commitment to the University of Arizona (she could be a 'Wildcat' for some time).  On a personal level she hopes to expand her playing opportunities this season and try other positions rather than forward, a goal she has set for the entire team, to broaden everyone's skills.  The athletic Aguilera has run for the track team in the past, but she will focus on club soccer this soccer this Spring.  She needs to stay active, since her favorite meal is "Wisconsin Bacon", and she hopes everyone will come out this year and support the Wildcats!

Athlete: Kayla Hart, Freshman
Sport: Girls' JV Soccer
Coaches Lens (Head Coach Oscar Avendano): "Recently Kayla played an awesome game, she had five shots on goal, one assist and scored the winning goal in the second half of the game. Her ball touches and distribution to teammates were awesome to see."
Kayla Hart has been playing soccer for ten years, she finds inspiration from all the varsity players at Woodside and Alex Morgan, a player on the US national team, and like many players at Woodside she has been inspired by the legendary 'Coach Martha' along with Coach Ivan. Kayla also enjoys volleyball and basketball, but she is committed to soccer 100% at Woodside, which she enjoys for the teamwork and competition. She believes this year's JV team will be "solid, but we just need to gel more." She hopes to continue playing at the college level (maybe the University of Oregon) and to eventually become a lawyer or "be successful and have a family." At home she enjoys her dog, an Itsuo Inouye, along with the family recipe for lasagna, made by her mom or grandmother, besides just spending time with her friends and family. Good luck to Kayla and the entire JV soccer team!
