 Students of the Week

Student: Hal Tuttle

Class: Video Production II
Teachers' Lens - Gwen Sidley: "Ask any teacher who has taught Hal and they will tell you what a great pleasure it is to have Hal in class. He is smart, kind, creative, and fun. His videos this year have been outstanding. He has a terrific eye with the camera and his storytelling is excellent. Get ready for an amazing creative movie by Hal that will air at our January film festival. He's a wonderful human being as well as a talented videographer."

Hal Tuttle, in his junior year, enjoys filming movies and playing tennis. Hal attributes his success at school to "a positive mind set and waking up in a good mood." He has been inspired by his parents for the "good example they set" and by his tennis coach for "pushing him to improve all the time." Looking down the road Hal hopes to play tennis in college and continue making films, with the long term goal of being a professional tennis player. His favorite movie is '101 Dalmatians', and he enjoys eating a BLT avocado on Dutch Crunch. Hal will also be announcing tonight's basketball game beginning at 5:30 in the new gym.

Student: Luis Cauich
Teachers' Lens - Gwen Sidley: "Luis is a hardworking, enthusiastic member of the team that does the daily announcements. He has a good work ethic, a warm smile, and a passion for being part of the announcements. This year Luis has made recycling ads, words of the day, a scene from the Sandlot, and much more. He has great Woodside spirit with enthusiasm for football and leadership as well as video production."

Luis Cauich's hard work has not gone unnoticed by his classmates and teachers, and he truly enjoys his video production class where he "is able to be creative", in addition to the "other skills that are required such as writing and planning." He feels the biggest challenges at school are final exams because they can be "difficult and take a lot of effort and hard work." A fellow classmate, Zebulon Miller, has inspired Luis through his "sense of humor and nice, helpful attitude." Luis believes his own success has come from a true enjoyment of learning and being helpful. For a career Luis dreams of playing in the NFL, but would be happy as a video producer. When not in school Luis enjoys pizza, Harry Potter, the Avengers, and Bob Marley.

M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"The Well-Balanced Student," with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success

Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.

Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments.

In this presentation, you will learn:

·       How students today are coping-or not-with the academic pressure they face
·       Ways you can reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school
·       Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, SUHSD Parent Education Series, Program Director,  cmargot@csmconsulting.net or 650.868.0590.

SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!
Spanish interpretation will be available.
