SCHOOL NEWS
Homecoming Week
Each day, all grades are encouraged to dress according to their pre-determined theme. At lunch there will be various activities happening in the quad. The themes that are in bold represent the main themes for the class's float and skit. On days with the school color highlight will have that particular grade dressing according to their class color. On that day the class is to have students wearing the color sit on the quad steps. Then leadership will count the number of students wearing their class color. The grade with the highest percentage of students wearing their color will win that part of the competition.

Mentoring Opportunity
The Academy Program is a small learning community made up of dedicated teachers working collaboratively. During their junior year, students may request a Community Mentor that works with them on both academic & career goals. We have spoken with all of the students and their career interests are widespread, ranging from chef and police officer to zoo keeper, and environmental sciences.
We are hoping that you, or someone that you know, might be able to participate in this program as a mentor. The commitment is approximately two hours per month, with most interactions via email and four face-to-face meetings over the course of the school year.
The first meeting is scheduled for November 6, 9AM in the MUR, and the program ends in early May. If you or a colleague have any questions, please contact Faith Velschow, Mentor Coordinator, via email at fvelschow@seq.org or via phone at 650-591-7502. You may go to the Academy websites to see more information:
Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Athletes of the Week - October 10
Varsity Athlete: Sione Halaapiapi, Sophomore Sport: Varsity Football Coaches' Lens (Head Coach - Justin Andrews): "Sione is becoming a force on both sides of the ball despite only being a sophomore. He has the ability to take over a football game, as was demonstrated on his game-winning winning touchdown run against South San Francisco High School last Friday night.) He's getting better every week, and will be regarded as one of the best football players in the Peninsula Athletic League if he continues." Performance: Sione scored three touchdowns offensively, including his game winner with less than 30 seconds left in the game. Defensively he was responsible for securing nine tackles.

On November 13, the Woodside Parent Education Series welcomes Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) in "Building a Positive Experience for Student Athletes." Since its launch in 1998 at Stanford University, PCA has impacted more than 5 million youth athletes in the Bay Area and across the United States.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Stanford Splash Fall 2014
Splash is a program that brings high school and middle school students from everywhere to Stanford's campus for a two-day learning extravaganza. Classes are taught by Stanford undergraduates, graduate students, and other community members.
Student registration will open at 9:00 AM on Monday, October 20, 2014! Splash itself will be on the weekend of November 8-9, 2014. To help you through our registration process, please download and refer to this Splash student registration guide.
Student registration is broken into two phases: (1) the class lottery and (2) the first-come first-serve (FCFS) class sign-ups. Please keep this in mind during the registration process.
=== PHASE 1: Class Lottery ===
The class lottery phase opens at 9:00 AM on Monday, October 20 and ends Tuesday, October 28 at 11:59 PM. After this deadline, the lottery will run, and students will be randomly placed into classes that they have selected as ones they are interested in taking. Because the lottery is random, we recommend you mark as many classes as "interested" as possible!
There is no incentive to enter the lottery as soon as it opens. The preferences of all students who enter the lottery before the deadline are considered equally. In other words, you will not be at a disadvantage if you enter your lottery late, as long as you enter by October 28!
=== PHASE 2: First-come First-serve (FCFS) Class Sign-ups ===
Once the lottery is run, student registration will re-open and all students will be free to enroll in remaining open spots of classes on a first come first-serve basis. This phase will run from October 30 to November 3. After November 3, students cannot change their schedule online except to cancel their entire registration for Splash.
=== Questions? ===
If you have any questions, you can refer to our FAQ here or send us an email at stanfordesp@gmail.com.
We hope to see you at Fall Splash on November 8-9, 2014!
