SCHOOL NEWS

COLLEGE DAY, Wednesday, October 15 - minimum day, dismissal at 12:30

College day is funded by a generous anonymous donor so that EVERY Woodside High School student has a college-focused day -- THANK YOU!

9th graders report to campus by 8 am to load buses to tour one of five college campuses with their 2nd period classmates/teacher. They should have already returned their permission slips.
10th graders report to campus by 9 am to the old gym and take the PSAT, a practice college entrance exam, or attend a class assembly and Naviance career exploration with teachers. Classroom assignments for testing will be posted at the old gym.
11th graders report to campus by 9 am to take the PSAT, a practice college entrance exam. Classroom assignments for testing will be posted at the admin building.
12th graders report to Bradley Field by 9 am for a light snack before heading into the PAC for a speaker, college entrance and career speakers, and a financial aid presentation.

Homecoming Week

Each day, all grades are encouraged to dress according to their pre-determined theme. At lunch there will be various activities happening in the quad. The themes that are in bold represent the main themes for the class's float and skit. On days with the school color highlight will have that particular grade dressing according to their class color. On that day the class is to have students wearing the color sit on the quad steps. Then leadership will count the number of students wearing their class color. The grade with the highest percentage of students wearing their color will win that part of the competition.

Mentoring Opportunity

The Academy Program is a small learning community made up of dedicated teachers working collaboratively.  During their junior year, students may request a Community Mentor that works with them on both academic & career goals.  We have spoken with all of the students and their career interests are widespread, ranging from chef and police officer to zoo keeper, and environmental sciences.

We are hoping that you, or someone that you know, might be able to participate in this program as a mentor.  The commitment is approximately two hours per month, with most interactions via email and four face-to-face meetings over the course of the school year.

The first meeting is scheduled for November 6, 9AM in the MUR, and the program ends in early May.

If you or a colleague have any questions, please contact Faith Velschow, Mentor Coordinator, via email at fvelschow@seq.org  or via phone at 650-591-7502.  You may go to the Academy websites to see more information:

SPORTS NEWS

Athletes of the Week - October 3

Varsity Athlete: Cole Alves

Sport: Girls' Water Polo
Coaches' Lens (Head Coach-Laura Reynolds): "Cole moved up to Varsity this year to fill the shoes of the former MVP-Goalie of the league last year. She has more than stepped up. Although she is only 5'4" tall, she plays like a 6' goalie - blocking every shot that comes at her outside of 5 meters.
She is our defensive quarterback and most spirited player right now. I can rely on her to step up at game time, she never quits!"

Underclassman Athlete: Max Untrecht
Sport: Boys' Varsity Water Polo

Performance and Coaches' Lens (Head Coach-Rafael Alapont):  "During this past week Max scored 12 goals, 6 goals vs. Terra Nova and 6 goals vs. San Mateo. His defense on the perimeter led to our scoring counter attacks. He has improved his court vision to make his teammates better."

Cross Country Second PAL Meet

Woodside's Cross Country Team raced in their second PAL meet on Wednesday, October 8. The team raced on a hilly, dusty and challenging 2.33 mile course on the campus of picturesque Half Moon Bay High School.

In the picture below, runners are seen charging down "Cougar Hill," known in local cross country lore as one of the most challenging climbs. The team enjoyed perfect running weather: sunny with a cool breeze from the nearby ocean.

Next up for cross country is the Center Meet at Crystal Springs on October 15.
