AFFORDABLE HOUSING'S PLACE IN HEALTHCARE: OPPORTUNITIES CREATED BY THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT AND MEDICAID REFORM
Viveiros, J., June 2015, Ideas for Housing Policy and Practice
" The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has changed the landscape of health care policy in the United States and has opened up opportunities for the housing and health communities to work together to improve outcomes for individuals and families. ...
Because housing is a key social determinant of health, stable and affordable housing is an important part of a comprehensive strategy for achieving better health outcomes among low-income individuals."
AGING IN EVERY PLACE: SUPPORTIVE SERVICE PROGRAMS FOR HIGH AND LOW DENSITY COMMUNITIES
Viveiros, J. & Brennan, M., March 2014, Ideas for Housing Policy and Practice
"Over the next three decades, as the baby boomer generation ages, the number of older adults in the United States will rise to unprecedented levels. This population shift is creating a growing urgency within the health care and housing fields to plan and prepare for the growing and changing needs of older adults. Living arrangements, service options, and care provision for the booming population of older adults need to be cost effective, adaptable to different levels of independence or frailty, and attentive to individual preferences." HOW AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE POPULATION MAY SHIFT THE FUTURE OF LONG-TERM CARE
Nicholson, R., August 2015, InvestigAge
"Older adults and their families are faced with a number of decisions surrounding the provision of long-term care. ... Some of these decisions will be dictated by finances and the level of care needed for an older adult, but cultural values and norms will also play an important role. And as the population of older adults in the United States becomes more diverse, there could be significant implications for the demand for formal long-term care." Read more...

Dolphin Tank Pitch Session
Do you have a great idea that will improve the lives of older adults? As part of GSA's "Technology Track" at our upcoming meeting in Orlando, we're featuring the "Dolphin Tank", a unique opportunity for you to pitch your aging-related product, service, or idea! The Dolphin Tank is a kinder, gentler version of ABC's hit television show "Shark Tank". Six aspiring or experienced entrepreneurs will be selected to present two-minute pitches and to receive positive feedback and actionable insights from a panel of experts and the audience. GSA's Technology Track will encompass a full day of sessions (on Friday, November 20) focused on aging, technology, and innovation. The six finalists will be selected (by late October) to pitch at this event and will be given free registration (for up to four total team members). To view the agenda or to apply to give a two-minute Dolphin Tank pitch, visit the GSA Technology Track webpage by clicking here.

Taking AFARI to the Next Level with an NIH STTR Award
|
|
RBC Corps has been granted a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award through the NIH for AFARI. AFARI was originally invented by Drs. Liz DePoy and Stephen Gilson, both of the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies. Vince Caccese of UMaine's Mechanical Engineering department is the third inventor who joined them later. AFARI is an innovative, three-wheeled, aesthetically designed, fitness support to facilitate movement for those who have balance deficits, a fear of falling, and/or a condition that is eased by unloading body weight, to participate in upright outdoor walking, jogging, or running on diverse terrain. The objective of this proposed STTR Phase I effort is to gather scientific information that will accelerate the market introduction of AFARI and eliminate the major barriers to its successful commercialization.
