It's Hurricane Season

June 1st is the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season. It's also the (18th) anniversary of my wedding! It's comical to compare and reflect on the two:
  • Both are highly anticipated, and then the actual event comes and goes quickly
  • When it comes, it's too late to prepare any more - you have to adapt and move forward from where you are
  • There is a surreal calm in the middle of the event
  • What you learn from watching others go through it could save you when your time comes

And, like most metaphors/analogies/comparisons, if taken too far it breaks down in colossal failure - we've had no destruction or insurance claims from our marriage!

I suppose we could say this is true of a lot of things, but I think these traits are also applicable to speaking. We anticipate events, and then they are over. Once we begin to speak, it's too late to prepare. There can be calm in the middle of the storm (especially for those who are prepared!). And learning from others is a GREAT way to prepare yourself for a high-stakes event.

So, why all the dread? Prepare, do what you can, do your best, and move on.

Don't let the storm of your next speaking opportunity cause damage! Prepare now!

P.S. Public Service Announcement. For those of you in the typical path of hurricanes, you can find a preparedness tip sheet here. Having ridden out several hurricanes in multiple states, I can say that the destruction is amazing to see. You can't over prepare - hmmm, also true of speaking!

Speaking Tip of the Month

Taken from a fantastic book about mastering anything, Practice Perfect, isolate what you are practicing on.  Don't try to do everything at once.  Pick ONE thing in your practice (for instance, gestures), and work on that until you see the improvement you need.  Then isolate another skill or objective.  Practicing everything at once is overwhelming.

Don't forget!  We have more tips, resources and videos on our website at www.millswyck.com/speaking-resources/
