A New Beginning

Have you ever skipped a rock across the water?  It is amazing how it will bounce and bounce and bounce.  If you throw it just right, you can even get it to the other side of the water-bank.  It all comes down to effort, skill and distance.

Much is about life and our business actions as well.  Everything we undertake and achieve comes down to the effort we exhibit; the skill we obtain; and, the length of time we are involved in our efforts.  As John D. Rockefeller said, "If you want to succeed, you should strike out on new paths rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success."

As we begin this year, give every task 112%!  Educate yourself.  Learn new things and methods.  Be open to change and develop yourself a workable plan of action.  As the rock skips across the water, lunging forward to the next opportunity, make your "jumps" high!  Push yourself further!  Never accept "no" for the answer and dare to dream!  Dream for the best in life and it will come!  It will come, not necessary always in monetary riches, but in the satisfaction of a job well done!

Effort, skill and distance...are you prepared to make it happen?  It is a new beginning.  What you can achieve will be based on what you do. Strike out on new pathways to bring your dreams into reality!

Make this year your best ever!

Top 10 Retirement Planning MistakesThursday, January 17, 2013

Fellow NAIFA-Huntington members:

Well the Holidays are over, so we all need to get back into the swing of things. To help you out, we are providing 1 hour of free CE to NAIFA-Huntington members ($10 for non-members and free lunch) at our monthly membership meeting on Thursday, January 17th. The CE class, "Top 10 Retirement Planning Mistakes" approved for WV and OH license holders will be held from 12:00 - 1:00 PM and our board meeting will be held at 11:00 AM. As always, we will meet at Ponderosa on Rte. 60 in Huntington.

We have a few new members that we all hope to see, so everyone please plan to come and welcome Jim Moreland and Loralee Carmichael. We will also have some information regarding the Fiscal Cliff Act to pass out if anyone is interested. Also, we are planning on having at least 1 hour of CE every month (every 3rd Thursday) at least until June, at which time we would like some feedback to see if you wish to continue this process. Thanks and don't forget to mark your calendars.

See you all next Thursday!

The Need to Use Caution in Annuity Sales to Seniors

Members are reminded that they should take particular care when making annuity sales to seniors in order to protect themselves from ending up in a similar situation as Glenn Neasham, the California producer who was convicted of theft for selling an annuity to a senior client who was later found to have dementia.

According to a recent series of articles in LifeHealthPro, an online product of the National Underwriter, there are numerous steps advisers can take to lessen the odds of their becoming involved in litigation as a result of selling annuities to seniors.  These measures include: 1) taking a second look as to whether an annuity is actually the most appropriate investment at that point in the client's life; 2) making an audio or (better yet) video record (with the client's knowledge and approval) of your discussions about annuities with your clients; 3) asking the client to have a family member or friend present when annuity sales are discussed; and 4) avoiding annuity sales to senior clients, or holding off on such sales at least until state regulators or the NAIC develop specific, detailed guidelines on how producers can safely make such sales and be protected from litigation down the road.

Links to the two LifeHealthPro articles are HERE and HERE.
