H&A wins top award for monrovia embassy

The design of the new embassy compound in Monrovia, Liberia, has won  the highest award for engineering excellence presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies Virginia.

Nancy Israel, executive director of ACEC Virginia, commented that, "The U.S. embassy was off the charts in terms of size, design challenges, innovative approaches to energy conservation and sustainability."

Located on a rocky coastline in the war ravaged city, the project presented many challenges for the design team whose primary goal was to use as few of Monrovia's limited resources as possible. The result was a self-sustaining compound that achieved LEED Gold certification.

H&A provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, telecommunications, and technical security design. The design-build contractor was B.L. Harbert International and the architect was PageSoutherlandPage. Our client was the Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations.
