Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA

Founder and President

Dear Friends,

Although we've been on hiatus, I must confess I've still been going a mile a minute! The down time from the Institute allowed me to focus on growing our wonderful Facebook page, and I appreciate your "likes," comments, and words of wisdom that are helping to build an ongoing community conversation. It has also been so gratifying and humbling to be involved in many media opportunities on the radio, TV, through blogging, and on-line magazines, to help educate both clinicians and laypeople about trauma, self-destructive behaviors, self-compassion, and self-care. I am also excited to announce that I will be a weekly blog contributor to Psychology Today online, and you will be able to access those pieces through the website as well as our Facebook page.

Since February is always associated with Valentines Day, I want to dedicate this issue to a more specific focus on how to help couples when one partner is involved in self-destructive behaviors and the other is slowly burning out as they attempt to "fix" them. I'm sure you have worked with this in your practice, and I hope the simple list of Do's and Don'ts noted in by newest blog post is helpful!

Stay warm, and as we gear up to go full speed ahead into our ninth year at the Institute, I look forward to seeing you all for more terrific and many new workshop offerings.

Warmest Regards,

Lisa Ferentz

P.S. REMEMBER to ENTER our Spring Training Sweeps for a chance to win one of two trainings at The Institute!

Please share this newsletter with your colleagues so they too may benefit from the valuable resources published.  Thank you.

Helping a Partner Who Engages in Self-Destructive Behaviors
by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA

As Valentine's Day approaches couples become more mindful of the ways in which they can show their love through caring gestures and gifts. Flowers, cards, candy, and jewelry often communicate feelings of affection and gratitude. It's easy to acknowledge and celebrate a meaningful relationship, especially when it's uncomplicated and fulfilling. However, many people are in a relationship with a significant other who is grappling with some form of self-destructive behavior.

Are You an Enabler?
By Darlene Lancer, JD, MFT
PsychCentral.com

Enabling is a term often used in the context of a relationship with an addict. It might be a drug addict or alcoholic, a gambler, or a compulsive overeater. Enablers, rather than addicts, suffer the effects of the addict's behavior.

Enabling is "removing the natural consequences to the addict of his or her behavior." Professionals warn against enabling because evidence has shown that an addict experiencing the damaging consequences of his addiction on his life has the most powerful incentive to change. Often this is when the addict "hits bottom" - a term commonly referred to in Alcoholics Anonymous.
