Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA

Founder and President

Dear Friends,

Welcome back! It's the start of our Fall semester and I am excited to reconnect with you through our wonderful trainings. We are now in our eighth year and the ritual of beginning a new season of workshops is one that I always look forward to with joyful anticipation. The idea of reconnecting is the theme for this month's newsletter. I so appreciate that you take the time, each month, to connect with me and the Institute by reading these e-mails and then forwarding them to colleagues. And by responding to my blogs, and returning, again and again, to our trainings! As you 'll read about in this month's blog, which is inspired by my most recent visit with my amazing 99 year old grandmother, the experience of connecting and reconnecting to the people and experiences that are most historically meaningful in our lives is so important! So welcome back and may the coming semester bring us all new professional insights, personal growth, opportunities to reconnect with and build new connections with friends and colleagues.

Warmest Regards,

Lisa Ferentz

Please share this newsletter with your colleagues so they too may benefit from the valuable resources published.  Thank you.

Connecting to and Honoring the Past
by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA

If you've listened to any of my radio shows or read some of my newsletters, you know that I have an incredible grandmother who has always been a special source of wisdom and inspiration in my life. A few weeks ago, I was able to get back out to California to spend some quality time with her. Just being in her presence is an immediate source of comfort because, for me, she is an instant connection back to a childhood that is filled with loving, happy memories of celebrations, holidays, milestones, and countless family gatherings in her beautiful home and backyard that seemed magical to me and my siblings. Although I was sitting with my grandmother on the patio of her assisted living complex planning her 100th birthday party, I was continually transported back in time, as we reminisced about the goldfish pond in her backyard, the bang of the kitchen screen door opening and closing countless times during family Bar-B-Q's, the lullabies she used to sing to us, the way she used to cut up orange slices and make then look like a work of art on the plate.

family-carving-pumpkin.jpg Question: What does it take to make good family memories? I know it's important to do so, but it's tough to make it happen with so much going on in day-to-day life. Do you have any advice for how to be intentional in this area?

Answer: Strong families are built on a foundation of love, and love, as you probably know, doesn't simply happen. Love takes work - especially when the details of the day-to-day grind seem to crowd out everything else and leave you short on time and sapped of energy. "Making memories" is one way to create a lasting sense of common identity and shared family heritage among the members of your household.

NEW This Fall - From Trauma to Curiosity: Connecting to Animals and Nature
Monday, September 22
8:45 am - 4 pm
Facilitator: Vivien Deitz, LCSW-C, MSW, BCS

When curiosity is present, a client's personal healing odyssey takes form and continues to grow with the onset of a relationship to an animal and nature. Having a relationship with animals requires learning their language and opening up a space for a dialogue to occur with the deepest living part of who we are. This seminar will show us how to say 'hello' to our Power Animals and allow room for a reply.
