Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA
Founder and President
Dear Friends, As we continue to enjoy the lazy, hazy days of summer, it's not too soon to start getting excited about our Fall semester at the Institute and the terrific workshops we'll be offering! Please take the time to look at the evolving calendar. I know you will find something that piques your clinical and creative curiosity. We still have space available in both our Level I and Level II Certificates in Advanced Trauma Treatment and I am proud to say we now have over 500 graduates from those programs who continue to stay in touch, letting me know the countless ways in which the trainings have enriched and enhanced their clinical practices. In addition, several ongoing peer consultation groups have blossomed from the trainings and I am delighted at the wonderful networking and support that have emerged from those endeavors. I am equally excited to announce that, at long last, both the second edition of my first book, and the brand new workbook entitled "Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors: A Workbook of Hope and Healing," will be available in early September. I know you will find these resources incredibly useful and I look forward to an upcoming four-month national radio and television campaign to promote the books to both clinicians and the millions of people who struggle with manifestations of self-destructive acts. We will also be doing a special dessert book signing through the Institute in September and there will be more information about that in the next newsletter. My heartfelt gratitude to all of my dear colleagues who have supported my work and pushed me to get the second book out there! Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Warmest Regards,
Lisa Ferentz
Please share this newsletter with your colleagues so they too may benefit from the valuable resources published. Thank you.

Everything Old is New Again
by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA
Recently, I took a weeklong training at the wonderful Cape Cod Institute on ACT- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Although I had heard of the model, I was not familiar with the paradigm and I was eager to learn something brand new that I could bring to my practice and my teaching. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and resonated with so much of the material, I was struck with the notion that much of what I was learning, I had already incorporated in my work with clients.

Learn More About ACT- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: A mindful way to treat disorders
by Deborah Seerani, Psy.C
February 22, 2011
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps you accept the difficulties that come with life. ACT has been around for a long time, but seems to be gaining media attention lately. Categorically speaking, ACT is a form of mindfulness based therapy, theorizing that greater well-being can be attained by overcoming negative thoughts and feelings. Essentially, ACT looks at your character traits and behaviors to assist you in reducing avoidant coping styles. ACT also addresses your commitment to making changes, and what to do about it when you can't stick to your goals.
