Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors

Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA

Founder and President

Dear Friends,

Well, I really thought Spring was on its way but as I write this, it is, amazingly, hailing and snowing outside! I guess we are going to have to find ways, other than the weather, to put ourselves in a 'Springtime" frame of mind! For me, seeing familiar faces again at our trainings is a great way to reconnect with the sense of renewal that Spring always promises. As our workshops are now back in full swing, I hope you join us for some wonderful new trainings that are guaranteed to renew your excitement and creativity for the work that you do. I know there are continuing education classes that are less expensive, but I also know there is no other place that gives you the level of quality and the personal attention and care that goes in to every one of our classes. Please continue to spread the word to colleagues, you are our ambassadors, and you are the ones who keep the Institute so lively and interesting.

This newsletter is focused on a current world event that has captured the attention of millions and I think has lessons attached to it that can be useful for us as professionals. The disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, and the varied reactions of family members, offers a reminder of the continuum of responses to tragedy. Read on for some interesting observations about this deeply sad event.

Warmest Regards,

Lisa Ferentz

Please share this newsletter with your colleagues so they too may benefit from the valuable resources published.  Thank you.

Reactions to the Tragedy of Flight 370
by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA

There are many tragic things surrounding the mystery of Malaysian Flight 370, including the horrible period of anxious waiting that terrified family members endured and the ongoing lack of information and closure regarding what happened to all of the souls who were aboard. Even after the authorities, using a strategy from physics called the Doppler effect, announced their theory that the plane had somehow crashed in the depths of the Southern Indian Ocean, the reaction of family members was as varied as we usually find in cases of tragedy and trauma.

Denial: When it Helps and
When it Hurts
by Mayo Clinic Staff
Mayo Clinic

If you're in denial, you're not being realistic about something that's happening in your life - something that might be obvious to those around you.

In some cases, a little denial can be a good thing. Being in denial for a short period can be a healthy coping mechanism, giving you time to adjust to a painful or stressful issue. It might also be a precursor to making some sort of change in your life. Still, denial has a dark side. Being in denial for too long can prevent you from effectively dealing with issues that require action, such as a health crisis or a financial situation.

Find out when denial can help - and when it can be a roadblock.
