Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors

Message from Lisa Ferentz LCSW-C, DAPA

Founder and President

Dear Friends,

Last month's newsletter focused on the horrific shooting that took place in the Columbia Mall. I talked about the sad reality that places we've always thought of as "safe havens" have been compromised by acts of violence and terrorism. This month I wanted to share a remarkable and wonderfully positive story that also took place in a mall. This is a true story and, hopefully, will help to restore your belief in the inherent goodness of human beings. It will remind you of the power of connection and the responsibility we have to help one another. Read this month's blog and be inspired to do acts of kindness for your fellow man! And trust that these positive actions go a long way towards counter-balancing the tragic ones.

With classes resuming the beginning of March, I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Warmest Regards,

Lisa Ferentz

Please share this newsletter with your colleagues so they too may benefit from the valuable resources published.  Thank you.

Acts of Kindness that Heal the World
by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA

My husband shared this remarkable story with me, and I wanted to pass it on to all of you. One of his employees, we'll call her Sally, was shopping in a local mall. A young child came up to her begging for money for food. It was clear that this child was hungry, and Sally asked to speak to the child's mother. It turns out, the mother spoke broken English, had three children, no job, was abandoned by her husband, had an exorbitant rent she could not afford, for a small apartment with no heat or hot water. Rather than questioning the story or walking away, Sally decided she was going to help this woman and her family. When she returned to work at my husband's office, she let everyone know that she was collecting blankets and towels for this family. Many people responded. I heard about this woman's plight as my husband was going through our linen closet, putting aside items for her.

The Brianna Benlolo Memorial Fund and Tyler Johnson Memorial Fund have been established to help family, nonprofits in honor of the victims. Two memorial funds have been set up to honor those killed in the Jan. 25 shootings at The Mall in Columbia, according to senior mall manager Ashley Venable. Venable announced at an outdoor vigil Thursday night that the mall in conjunction with Zumiez was helping to promote the funds for Brianna Benlolo, 21, and Tyler Johnson, 25, who were killed last weekend in the Zumiez store where they worked.

Counseling Tips

When you are helping clients process tragic events, especially children or trauma survivors, remember that in the aftermath, they may have a skewed and negative sense of the world and the extent to which they can trust other people. Encourage them to express these feelings, without agreeing with them, so you have clarity about the cognitive distortions that will need to be addressed when the timing is right. Help clients to restore a sense of balance by re-focusing their attention on the people and situations that represent kindness and goodness in the world. I ask my clients to search the web or Youtube for articles or videos that illustrate people doing good deeds, or paying it forward. This provides objective "evidence" that good things still happen in the world. Gently move clients in the direction of re-framing the tragedy as a reminder and an opportunity to reach out to help others or reconnect with a sense of gratitude for the positive things they still have in their lives. Invite them to come up with a "pay it forward' act of kindness that they can do for someone else.
