SSSA Notes
July 2015

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I'm writing this letter a few weeks before the Orlando Conference. I'm not afraid to say that I'm nervous about this conference. This will be my first conference as President and it's the biggest one we've ever had. Wow.....that's enough to make a girl really nervous.

I have been thinking quite a bit lately about what past conferences have meant to me. The fellowship with other families has made a lasting impression upon me. The friendships that are renewed each year or every other year. Watching the children grow and seeing the acceptance that they have for each other.

The chance to talk with the top experts on Sotos. The opportunity to attend lectures that have proven to be very helpful in the past. I'm very excited about the speakers that Sue Jennings (conference planner) has lined up for this conference. It's going to be an amazing experience.

I would like to ask all of you to remember when you are at Disney World that the conference is the main reason that we are all there. While it may be tempting to skip out and go to Disney World attractions just think about what you'll be missing out on if you don't attend the conference events. Mickey is cool and all that but he'll still be there after the conference is over. Just something to think about it.

Here are some pictures that were taken last year at Little Rock. Now, be honest how can Mickey compete with these kids? Lol

 Learning from Each Other/Family Story
 by Karen Osborne

At last years conference I shared about my son's vision issues and got a lot of feedback from other families and thought it may be beneficial to others to share our story.

When Chase was an infant his first diagnosis was nystagmus, farsighted and strabismus and that began the series  over the next few years of doctor visits and diagnosis including Sotos Syndrome.  We had therapists coming into our home and because he had vision issues we were able to get a teacher that specialized in vision issues (TVI -teacher of the visually impaired).

One day I mentioned to his TVI that he was so slow sometimes when we walked around and I wasn't sure if it was a focus issue, motor planning issue or something else.  Some of the things he did was feel with his foot when a surface would change.  He was always so hesitant when he walked and very slow.  Some of the areas he had the most trouble with include grates over a sidewalk, the red bumpy sidewalk when you walk

out of a store and when he'd walk down steps he'd feel for the next step with his foot even though there was no step.  Some of the fine motor issues it effected included not seeing things that didn't have a lot of contrast like a chocolate chip on a dark table (my daughter took seconds to fine!)

Our TVI and an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) tested him and found he had CVI (cortical Vision Impairment).  CVI is ranked on a scale and he scored in the upper range, which is good.  Most who have it start out in the lower range and with therapy can improve.  Ranking high on this scale is rarer and makes it harder to discover.  What it means for him is that he has a harder time processing what he sees and needs his visual environment to be simplified.  For the last five years a TVI and O&M therapist work with him and have helped him to improve and learn ways to keep him safer.

 2015 SSSA Annual Conference
 July 10-July12

If you are attending the SSSA conference....

1) Please check your spam folder for an email from regonline.com or volunteerspot.com
These are two online planning sites we are using to assist us in organizing doctor appointments and other conference activities. You need to use the special link to make your doctor appointment.

2) Conference check-in is between 1 and 5 pm on Friday, July 11. Registrants will receive their conference package with detailed agenda.

3) Helpful tips:
-Conference rooms tend to be cooler....pack a sweater just in case.
-Temps are high in Orlando...if you plan on going to the park, sunscreen, hat, Be Kool strips are helpful or Frogg Toggs Chilly Pads. As well as Pocket fans or misters. The shows are great at WDW, they also can be a source for a cool down.

4) Bring items to donate to the silent auction which raises money for the Carol Richey Assistance Fund which helps families attend the conference for the first time.

5) Plan to attend the Sunday SSSA business meeting and the doctor's question and answer panel.

6) Enjoy! SSSA conferences are filled with information and family support. See you at WDW!

What Will Happen When My Child With Special Needs
 Isn't Seen as Cute?
 by Laurie Arnold

"Last week I posted a new video of my
daughter Julia laughing on Facebook. I was quickly informed via a comment from a "friend" that she "must confess" she did not find Julia to be "quite as cute" in this latest posting......

   Huh?
The
comment was odd, to say the least. Who says that, really? Nonetheless, the comment was made, and as weird as it was and as much as comments like that probably just need to be ignored and chalked up to the strangeness that is social media -  I find myself having a hard time letting it go. Not because of the reasons you might think. Yes, the comment was rude. No, you actually aren't required to confess thinking someone's child isn't looking quite so cute lately - you can (and should) keep that to yourself. The real reason I'm having a hard time letting it go is because it tapped into something very real to me, something I think about and worry over often.
What happens to Julia when the world doesn't think she's cute anymore?
