Welcome to Holland

Welcome to Holland

c1987 by Emily Perl Kingsley.

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says,

"Welcome to Holland"

Wow.....I LOVE the new website!!!  I was recently explaining Megan's diagnosis to someone who had never heard of Sotos Syndrome and pulled up the website as I was talking with her.  It was SO easy to inform her just by clicking on the tabs.  About an hour later I noticed that she was STILL on the website, looking at pictures and reading information!!  It's such a cool feeling to know that the SSSA achieved one of its' goals of updating the website to make it more user friendly, more informative with lots of pictures and a new, fresh look!  Many thanks to our long time member, past President, past Treasurer and current webmaster, Joanne Weick, who led this website project and to the Kevin and Toni Williams Technology fund for supporting the SSSA by providing the funds to educate people about Sotos Syndrome through technology.

The website is an ongoing work in progress.  Soon you will see items in the "company store" that you can purchase, t-shirts, backpacks and possibly ribbons.  All are items that educate and spread awareness.  If you have any ideas on other things to include in the store or on the website, please contact webmaster@sssa.com

I will close by sharing an email that I received from one of our members that I am also proud to call my friend,  It reminded me just how blessed I have been to have found this organization!:

"Just wanted to pass along that I had a chance to look at the website and go through a bunch of the material including the video. Awesome job. I am very impressed and I continue to be very proud of this organization and all it does for the families with Soto's syndrome children.

Astrid and I were lucky enough to find the SSSA 14 years ago with Michael when our niece told us about a site for a support organization and encouraged us to go to a conference in Seattle.

Smartest thing we ever did for Michael.

We weren't alone and we weren't different anymore. And we greatly value everything we have taken away from our time with the organization, from meeting the most knowledgeable doctors you can find and families and particularly the many great friends we have made and renew at each and every conference  hat we can attend.

I think this new website continues to reflect the best of what the organization is and does an excellent job of getting the message out to people. It would be my hope that many new families discover this website and with the great messages available realize how good the SSSA can be for them, especially the conferences and the support that is available.

Great job by the executive, present and past. Thanks for all your efforts

from Michael, Astrid, Keith and Adam."

Continued blessings,

Monica

Breakthrough Study
Reveals Biological
Basis for Sensory
Processing Disorders
in Kids

Sensory processing disorders (SPD)

are more prevalent in children than

autism and as common as attention

deficit hyperactivity disorder,

yet the condition receives far less

attention partly because

it's never been recognized as a

distinct disease.
