For the Love of Reading

This month, we celebrate the very heart and soul of Book Trust: BOOKS. When children have the opportunity to choose books they love, they fall in love with reading. The more they read, the better readers they become. A child's ability to read proficiently is closely correlated with later success as a student, an employee, and a citizen.

As Kofi Annan, Diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, shared:

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development, an essential complement to investments in roads, dams, clinics and factories. Literacy is a platform for democratization, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity. Especially for girls and women, it is an agent of family health and nutrition. For everyone, everywhere, literacy is, along with education in general, a basic human right.... Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential."

Thank you for sharing the love of reading
for children who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to choose and own books...
and realize their full potential!

We LOVE Growing!
New schools (and a new state!) join the Book Trust program

Book Trust is thrilled to welcome two new schools this month!

One hundred first and second graders at Hallett Fundamental Academy in Denver, CO will be ordering books thanks to the generosity of the Denver Chapter Links, Incorporated and Hallett Fundamental Academy. With almost 90% of the students receiving free and reduced lunch, Hallett is committed to providing a rich and rigorous academic experience for all of their students.

Thanks to a community fundraising effort, the first graders at Andrew Jackson Elementary School in Philadelphia, PA will now be ordering books through Book Trust every month. A culturally diverse school with 93% of its students' qualifying for free and reduced lunch, the school's mission is Working United Toward Excellence. Over 25% of the school's students go on to the city's most selective magnet high schools.

A Look Inside a Book Trust School
Part III: The Unexpected Benefits of the Book Trust Program
Grand Avenue Primary Learning Center | Orlando, FL

Because each teacher orders every month and supports the students in purchasing $7 worth of books every month, they accrue thousands of Scholastic Bonus Points to spend on classroom resources, teaching tools and books. From the Pre-K teacher loving her new MP3 player for playing her circle-time songs to the classroom libraries and audio book collections, Book Trust literally provides a gift that keeps on giving.

Storia inspires kids with the favorite characters and bestselling series they love, from Geronimo Stilton and Ready, Freddy! to Harry Potter and the Hunger Games.

My favorite use of the Scholastic Bonus Points is purchasing Storia ebooks, which the entire school can access on our school iPads.

You will find any number of students reading books or having the iPad read the book to them on Storia during the day; however, there are other ways we use this product. I hold 2nd grade literature circles, where I've purchased one Storia chapter ebook and the whole group reads that same book, one chapter a day then we discuss through our Lit circle job assignments, until we complete the book. There is a dictionary included so students can "look up" any word in the book by clicking on it. They can also highlight passages and take notes on electronic note paper within the book. All because of Book Trust and Scholastic Bonus Points!

Thank you Gail Prezclawski
for sharing how Book Trust impacts your school!

Celebrating Two Big Nights!

Raise a pint glass (and margarita glass!) for Books on Tap, the 2nd Annual Book Trust event in Fort Collins that raised over $55,000 for kids in need to choose and own books. On Thursday, January 23, over 200 local supporters packed the house at the Agave Room for a fun-filled evening to celebrate the valuable work of Book Trust.

Bill Neal, Colleen Fine, Kathy Neal, Sally Castner and Denise Schuetter
enjoy the festive evening hosted at The Agave Room at the Rio.

Tiffany Leeson, SeonAh Kendall, Sarah Kruse, Joe Kruse enjoy a complementary margarita, thanks to our margarita sponsor, Blue Margin.

While across the ocean,
Maui celebrated the 2nd Annual Book Trust Extravaganza, raising over $75,000 to support Maui keiki in need.

Jill Schatz, Carolyn Schaffer, Karen Williams enjoy the
auction filled with collections of fine art, wine and spirits, and books.

Lou Cole, Bev Kozy, Jolene Cole, and Olivia Cole enjoy the night of festivities!

Together, these events will enable us to
serve thousands of students in need
with more than 50,000 new books!

Board Spotlight: Charles Malek
Chair of the Book Trust Denver Regional Board

Charles Malek joined the Denver Regional Board in June of 2012 and became the Chair of the Board in January 2014. Charles is a Denver native, and is the President and Owner of Wine Master Cellars.

Active in his community, Charles has served on various boards and been a key fundraiser for local causes. In his free time he enjoys participating in a boot camp, running, tennis, skiing, cycling, hiking, swimming, soccer, and activities with his wife and three children.

Charles reads with a student at a local book delivery at
Munroe Elementary School in Denver.
Charles shared with us why he enjoys serving on the Book Trust Denver Regional Board:

"I have 3 young kids and enjoy reading with them. It is really easy to see the difference reading makes in their lives. It is very important to me that other kids in our  community and across our country have the same opportunities my children have."

Thank you, Charles, for your
dedication and support of Book Trust!

Final Words

"Many of my students come from a hard home life. Their only way out of this cycle is to be educated, which strongly relates to their ability to read. I have seen the importance this year in having my kids love to be at school and love to read. Book Trust has enabled them to get books that have led to a love for reading that would not be possible without the books from Book Trust. Thank you!"
