CELEBRATE
Randolph Caldecott's birthday on March 22 (1846). |
2013 Caldecott Winner: This Is Not My Hat, written and illustrated by Jon Klassen
|
Randolph Caldecott was a British artist whose illustrations delighted young Victorian readers. In addition to his children's books, Caldecott also illustrated novels, created humorous drawings and cartoons, and sketched Parliament. His sculptures and paintings were exhibited in the Royal Academy and art galleries. The Caldecott Medal, named in his honor, has recognized the best illustrators in children's literature since 1938.

SPRING Has Sprung! |
A selection of books available in Scholastic flyers this month
|
Daylight savings, bouncing leprechauns, green grass, snow melting...or at least, if not now, it will be just around the corner. Spring is a time for new beginnings, and so often we hear from teachers how Book Trust has created new beginnings for their students. Each month, students have the option to choose up to $7 worth of books--whatever books they want--from Scholastic Book Club flyers. For these kids, a book provides a chance to go to another world, turn over another leaf, and experience the magic inside the crisp, new pages.
Thank you for everything you do to continue to bring the joy of reading to Book Trust students. We couldn't do it without you.

El Pomar's Student Leadership Experience
Future community leaders: win-win model for all
Taylorae DeWitt ('15), Erin Mross ('14), Patton Lowell ('15) and Sarah Papke ('15, not pictured), El Pomar scholars from Colorado State University, are extremely excited and passionate about their involvement with Book Trust.
El Pomar's Student Leadership Experience (SLE) Program, founded in 1937, seeks to enhance and supplement leadership education at Colorado Leadership Alliance (CLA) schools by developing select students into action-oriented community leaders. Through experiences with and exposure to the nonprofit sector and current and future leaders, these students demonstrate an understanding of civic engagement and show a willingness and desire to continue learning and growing in the nonprofit sector. |

When researching various issues affecting the state of Colorado, they knew they wanted to give back to their own Fort Collins community. They are excited to be teaming up with Book Trust to spend their year engaging with its mission of inspiring children's passion for reading and ultimately renew their own passion for life.

Seven Rules of Engagement
Research defines motivating factors of reading
In her article, Seven Rules of Engagement: What's Most Important to Know about Motivation to Read (2011), Linda Gambrell points out that we can do all we can to teach decoding and comprehensive reading skills, but if students are lacking motivation, they won't read. So, what does research say the motivating factors are? Students are more motivated to read when... - Reading tasks and activities are related to their lives.
- They have access to a wide range of reading materials.
- They have ample opportunities to engage in sustained reading.
- They have opportunities to make choices about what they read and how they engage in and complete literacy tasks.
- They have opportunities to socially interact with others about text they are reading.
- They have opportunities to be successful with challenging texts.
- Classroom incentives reflect the value and importance of reading.
Motivation matters. Book Trust values students' ability to have access to a wide variety of books--books that may be about their favorite basketball star or pop star or the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book--in other words books they can relate to. We believe in the power of choice. Our own research shows that when kids get to choose their own books--and own them--they read more. And we know, the more kids read, the better readers they become, setting them on a path to success! Read the article from The Reading Teacher by Linda B. Grambell here.
