A Teacher's View

I firmly believe that if students have more access to books that they love, and have chosen themselves, they are more apt to read and be excited about reading.

The more they read,
the better their decoding, fluency, and comprehension become.

I listen to the students share with other students on a monthly basis when our book orders arrive and, believe me, it has definitely impacted their attitudes about reading.

They are excited about their books and can't wait to share their excitement with their classmates.

Book Trust Is Aligned With The Common Core State Standards
By Elizabeth Soltys, Book Trust participating teacher at Crawford Elementary, Colorado

As we all know, there are standards our students are expected to meet each day, month, and year in school. The Common Core State Standards have been adopted in 45 states to ensure our students have the skills and knowledge to continue their education and be contributing members to our society.

In reading, students are expected to work on comprehension skills, read a variety of genres, understand the process of reading, and increase their knowledge on a variety of topics. Students are expected to research, write about their experiences, and form opinions, starting in the youngest of ages. Students are expected to prove their mathematical thinking, and have a strong understanding of algebra, statistics, and probability. In today's technology/media society, students are expected to be literate and knowledgeable in many areas.

Teachers may be thinking--how can I do all of this and still implement new programs and ideas? The Book Trust program is aligned with the Common Core State Standards to help us reach our goals and standards.

On book delivery days, kids immediately immerse

themselves in their book selections.

Book Trust provides the resources for students to achieve these standards. Not only are there lessons that align with specific standards, but also there are opportunities available for teachers and students to integrate this program into their school day to achieve these standards.

Teachers are able to gain resources (including books and technology) that help students succeed while students receive an abundance of texts and genres to help them in each subject area. Book Trust encourages students to become lifelong learners.

Take it from a kindergartner,

"Kindygarten is the best place ever.

I get new books, read them, and

imagine that I am in the book.

I know I can go everywhere!"

Research Shows Book Trust Increases Standardized Test Scores and Promotes Positive Attitudes Towards Reading

EDUheader

Recent research showing Book Trust's impact on students' standardized test scores and attitudes towards reading was presented at the 11th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education earlier this month. Dr. Cynthia Williams at Texas Christian University and Dr. Jimmy Byrd at the University of North Texas found Book Trust students not only have positive attitudes towards reading, but also, as students remain in the Book Trust program, their standardized test scores grow significantly higher than their peers outside of the program.

Attendees at the Hawaii International Conference on Education included academicians and professionals from various education related fields from all over the world. The interest in Book Trust was widespread, and the research fueled discussion on how Book Trust will make a lasting impact on students throughout the United States. Book Trust was excited and honored to be a part of this experience.
