From The Roots of Book Trust
Jeannie Craft, teacher and inspiration for us all

In January 2003, I sat dejected in a cold Maine apartment looking out at low gray skies, trying to warm up in multiple layers of socks and sweaters, and watching the mailman slog through the snow down our street. When he made it to our door, he handed me a manila envelope sent by Jeannie Craft, first grade teacher at Irish Elementary in Fort Collins, CO.

At that point Book Trust only reached a hundred or so children in three local schools. We were still testing it, and weren't quite sure yet what its impact was. Jeannie's letter and the accompanying children's thank you notes -- our first ever -- changed all that.

Through her and Irish students' eyes, we had our first window into a Book Trust classroom and the wonder and joy of the children it reached, as well as some of the first indications of the truly amazing academic and cultural impact the program inspires.

That manila envelope led to me returning to the sun of Colorado, to all of us who started and loved the program focusing our energies on building it, and ultimately was an invaluable part of why Book Trust now reaches over 25,000 children and continues to grow.

Jeannie became one of our founding board members, and has always been a tireless champion of Book Trust's teachers and the children it serves. She has seen us through three logos, two software systems, and ten years of surveys!  She is amazing.

As she transitions from being board member into a volunteer role, all of us at Book Trust honor and thank her for her passion, fierce love and advocacy of all children, and tireless work in her own classroom and on behalf of Book Trust.

I want to thank her myself for that amazing moment there in the cold when I realized that what we had seeded had begun to grow and give such joy to all involved.  It was life changing - for me and so many others.

If the thousands of Book Trust teachers, and the tens of thousands of Book Trust students knew to thank her -- the chorus would be deafening, and she would be recipient to an endless line of hugs.

Jeannie Craft

Jeannie, we will miss you at national board meetings but are grateful for your continued commitment to volunteer so generously on behalf of Book Trust.
Thank you always.

PartnershipA Strong Partnership Expands Book Trust
Serving 14 Additional Schools in Denver

Beginning this school year, Book Trust is empowering over 2,000 students in grades K-3 in 14 elementary schools to choose and own books each month of the school year in the Montbello and Green Valley Ranch communities in Denver---thanks to the generous support and partnership of the Foundation for Educational Excellence, the Piton Foundation, and Strad Energy.
This will result in an infusion of over 50,000 books into the neediest homes in this community and mobilize the community to focus on early literacy---not just in the schools, but outside of school as well.

A cadre of volunteers for each of the partici.pating schools will help children choose books, help teachers place the book orders, and celebrate literacy each month by distributing books and reading with children on book delivery days.

Home literacy is at the heart of the collaboration. On December 7 and January 17, working together with the Montbello Branch of the Denver Public Library, the Montbello Family Health Center, and Reach Out and Read Colorado, we'll host Family Literacy Night at McGlone Elementary School. Parents will learn strategies to support their children in developing literacy skills, while children will have fun playing literacy games and receiving books. We are planning a community wide book delivery day too.
