Final Words
Parents now have books they can read with their [children] and building a library at home is one of the greatest effects of this program aside from building life-long readers.
Students are able to share books with siblings and share with their family books they love to read.

Family Literacy Starts with a Book
Many families do not have a book at home---in fact more than 60% of children from low-income families have no books at home. Book ownership can spark a love of reading for a Book Trust student. And that love continues when they are able to build a home library---and read with their families. Book Trust students share their books and their love of reading with siblings, parents, and grandparents, developing a culture of literacy at home. Over 90% of Book Trust teachers report that Book Trust increases sharing of books with family. In fact, over 68% of our teachers responded that the program has increased parental involvement with reading at home and almost 72% say that Book Trust provides ways for parents to learn about and support their child's interest and education. Celebrate National Family Literacy Day on November 1st! |
Kate and Justin Rose Foundation Invests in Two New Schools in Florida Thanks to the support of the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation, Book Trust added Cypress Park Elementary (K-5) and Grand Avenue Elementary (PK-2) to serve over 500 students in Orlando.
Opening up a child's mind is unlocking their inner potential. As John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, "Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future." Kate and Justin want to see these children succeed in school and in life. They are very passionate about education and want to ensure all students have equal opportunity to a quality education.
A special thank you to the
Kate and Justin Rose Foundation for making this dream a reality.
Grand Avenue Elementary, one of the new schools supported by the Kate and Justin Rose Foundation, is excited to have Book Trust in their school. They have extended the program beyond the classroom into the library. The media specialist has set up special shelves in the library to display books featured in the Scholastic Book Club flyers by grade level catalogs (e.g. SeeSaw and Firefly). In addition, she spends a few minutes with classrooms that rotate through the library to share Scholastic catalogs, talk about the $7 available from Book Trust, share the displayed books, and encourage students to make their book selections. Each month new catalogs and books will be displayed in the library.
What a great idea to extend the Book Trust program beyond the classroom!

A Small, Rural School Witnesses the Impact of Book Ownership on Families
Rural. Depressed community. Over 75% of the students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. These are the challenges facing one of our schools, committed to finding a bright spot.
Stamford Central School in upstate New York started small by serving only kindergarten students when they first enrolled in Book Trust in 2006. The school leaders and teachers fell in love with the program and were committed to finding a way to provide the program to all students in grades K-3.
As they slowly expanded the program, adding a grade level as they could, teachers observed that those students who weren't eligible to participate were also not purchasing books---many families just couldn't afford the 'extras.'
Studies show that siblings share their books and model positive reading behaviors for their younger brothers and sisters. Parents are ultimately pulled into their children's excitement, permanently enriching the literacy culture of these families.
As Cindy, the Book Trust manager explains,
"With the push to increase reading skills, we felt it was important to have EVERY student receiving the books of their choice. By making a choice, they would be reading to themselves, parents and siblings more."
Thanks to their diligence, the school succeeded in securing a grant that will cover the costs for all 85 students to participate in grades K-3.

Book Deliveries Really Do Feel Like Christmas in the Classroom
Book deliveries always light up faces. Recently, Book Trust visited Mrs. Pilotin's kindergarten classroom at Makawao Elementary for our first Maui County Book Delivery this school year. Students were excited to receive books---books they had picked out for themselves to take home.
Des Abreu, Student Services Coordinator and
our newest Book Trust Maui County regional board member, reads with students at the book delivery
As kindergarteners, this is the first time these students are experiencing the Book Trust program and, for some, the first opportunity to have their very own books. The students were excited to share their book choices and talk about all the different books they were planning on reading throughout the year.
Students are excited to share their new books with friends
Thank you, Book Trust Supporters, for making this a reality for so many children each month. It is truly a delight (for us too)!
