"One of the paradoxes of our time is that the healing relationship seems most in jeopardy at a time when we need it most. There are many forces which threaten to depersonalize the meeting of a doctor and patient...A preoccupation with disease instead of a person is detrimental to good medicine....Health is not a commodity that can be purchased in any quantity as long as one has the money. One can buy the mechanical appurtenances of healing but one cannot buy that essential ingredient - a physician who really cares about the patient." G. Gayle Stephens, MD

Dear Colleague,
As we approach the holiday season and the end of another year, there is an opportunity to reflect on our blessings. We have received many gifts throughout the year that have enriched our lives and our work. The holiday season reminds us to express our gratitude.
Thanks to all those who helped make the 2012 FMEC Northeast Region meeting an "energizing" success.
Thanks to those who supported the launching of the Family Medicine Midwest Foundation, Inc. and the 2012 Family Medicine Midwest Conference. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the renewal of a regional movement in the north central states affirms the value of the FMEC and the importance of regional efforts to support Family Medicine.
Thanks to all who helped to sustain or launch a FMEC Collaborative Project or Learning Community in the past year.
- The FMEC IMPLICIT Network continues to thrive and thousands of babies are born at full term and will experience a healthier life because of the efforts of a dedicated team of Family Physicians, nurses and administrators.
- The FMEC Super Utilizer Learning Community is creating new methods to identify and respond to the needs of people with complex medical and social conditions.
- The FMEC Health Care Innovators Network continues to discover Family Physicians who have developed "primary care driven" products and services that improve the health of the people and communities.
Working collaboratively, we are growing the community of people who believe that a Family Medicine approach to caring for people and communities is critical if we are to improve the health of our nation.
On behalf of the FMEC Board of Trustees and Staff, thanks to all those who supported the FMEC in 2012.

Laurence Bauer, MSW, MEd

Advice to the Healer on the Art of Caring by RIchard Colgan, MD
This book introduces the origins of important teachings that form the basis of medicine and related healing professions. Reinforcing the humanistic side of patient care, this book replicates the tips, anecdotes and aphorisms often related by mentors and educators to medical students, residents, and young physicians. This book provides numerous examples of best practices in the art of medicine, profiles of great healers throughout history and around the world, and stories sure to inspire any practicing healer, whether they are new to the calling or a seasoned veteran.
What Matters in Medicine: Lessons from a Life in Primary Care, David Loxterkamp, MD ...the story of general practice in America. The focus of Dr. Loxterkamp's inquiry is the essence of the doctor's art what was once selflessly shared; what is urgently needed again. The topic could not be more timely. The unfolding of the Affordable Care Act, the sponsoring of Patient-Centered Medical Homes, the emergence of Accountable Care Organizations, and the disappearance of private practice are all reshaping the structure of primary care and its ability to balance health care needs of an aging population with a compassionate awareness of costs and value.
