 Greetings!

The 2013 Queen's Day/Enthronement Day celebration in Tucson on April 28, 2013 was without any doubt a tremendous success!

A record-breaking number of more than 225 guests (mostly dressed in Orange) descended upon Lincoln Park to celebrate 2013 Queen's Day/Enthronement Day where a private section of the park had been beautifully decorated in by a team of Queen's Day volunteers.

Under blue skies, the air was filled with hundreds of Red-White-Blue and Orange balloons, flags and sounds of typical Dutch music!

At 1 o'clock the guests arrived at the park, registered, received a wristband and were offered some typical Dutch treats (stroopwafels, speculaas, ontbijtkoek) and bottles of ice-cold water.

After a brief welcome by Arnold Adriaanse, LtCol RNLAF Maurice Schonk and Honorary Consul Mr. Siebe van der Zee (Consulate of the Netherlands, Scottsdale, AZ) gave their official opening speeches, followed by a toast to The President of the United States, (now former) Queen Beatrix and (now) King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

The openings ceremony was concluded by singing the American and Dutch anthems, beautifully performed by performing vocal artist Ms. Colleen Zandbergen.

Then the fun and games part began: people were playing badminton volleyball, soccer, (never fails with the Dutch!) 'zakkenlopen' (running in sacs) 'koekhappen' (trying to bite off candy dangling from a rope) sjoelbakken' (shuffle board), large-size chess, walking on ski's, 'Ren-je-Rot' (a runaround group competition/quiz, testing people's knowledge of the Netherlands)!

For the first time this year there was a flea market ("Vrijmarkt") where many people put all kinds of articles on display and sold them to the public. It was a wonderful sight!

Throughout the event delicious foods and drinks were made available to the guests, including freshly grilled sate, meatballs, snacks, etc.

The day ended with a Koninginnedag Borrel (Queen's Day happy hour) during which people mingled and enjoyed drinks and food.

The day ended around 6 PM.

As people left they were handed a commemorative gift: a mug with images the (now former) Queen Beatrix and (our new) King Willem-Alexander and the enthronement date of April 30, 2013 (see below). Uniquely imported directly from the Netherlands for Queen's Day Tucson participants - nowhere-else available in the US! Thanks to Kees Rodenburg for making this happen!

This has been a very memorable day! A big THANK YOU to the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this a wonderful and festive event!

And also a big THANK YOU to you for joining us and your many happy faces and big smiles!

Until next year!

Warmest regards,
