NFPA 58 Rules on Cathodic Protection
Corrosion Protection System Requirements for UG Tanks

"Did You Know?"

 UG Tank

The 2011 edition of NFPA 58 includes several changes for the installation of cathodic protection devices, which now must be installed, tested and monitored on all new underground propane-storage containers. These new rules are found in section 6.6.6.1(A)-(O).

One aspect of the new rules require a corrosion protection system shall be installed on new installations of underground steel containers, unless technical justification is provided to the authority having jurisdiction.  The corrosion protection system shall include the following: 1) a container coating complying with 5.2.1.11, 2) a cathodic protection system that consists of a sacrificial anode(s) or impressed current anode, and 3) a means to test the performance of the cathodic protection system.

Another aspect of the new rules is the cathodic protection system shall be monitored by testing and the results documented.

The sacrificial anodes shall be tested upon installation; for continued verification of the effectiveness of the system, 12-18 months after the initial test, and follow-up testing shall be performed at intervals not to exceed 36 months.

The Propane Education & Research Council has developed a training program that includes a handbook and a DVD. The video shows how to guard against corrosion of underground propane tanks and black iron or steel piping.

COPPER SULFATE CRYSTALS & ELECTRODES

Copper Sulfate Crystals

Note: Under average conditions, an electrode should be emptied and cleaned out every two or three months. However, if the electrode is allowed to remain in prolonged contact with low resistivity soil or water, more frequent rejuvenation may be desirable.  For consistent results, manufacturers recommend using the highest purity CuSo4 Crystal's possible.

Precautions:

STORAGE: CuSo4 will deteriorate over time. Electrodes, which are purchased in bulk and stored for later use, should always be checked before placing into service. Copper rods can become tarnished or pitted by deteriorating CuSo4 and the CuSo4 will become unusable. The copper in this condition will become contaminated, which will cause inaccurate readings. CuSo4 should have a rich, deep blue color. If the crystals appear to have become whitened or have the appearance of being dehydrated, discard in a safe manner and replace with fresh. Do not store the electrodes in a damp atmosphere. Some types of fungus or mold can contaminate the ceramic plug assemblies. Always rotate your stock using the "FIFO" (First In, First Out) method.

Common Source of Error: The voltmeter used in conjunction with reference electrodes should be of sufficiently high impedance (10 megohms or greater) so that contact resistance, which can occur between electrode and soil, does not affect readings. When taking readings, the ceramic plug must come in contact with soil. Vegetation such as grass should be moved out of the way. Grass or other items will add resistance and result in inaccurate readings. Reference electrodes are designed to be durable, but over time, the ceramic plug assembly will become contaminated by foreign Half Cellmaterials and become worn or cracked. At this point, the replacement of the ceramic plug assembly is highly recommended. If the CuSo4 mixture within the electrode becomes cloudy white, reverse osmosis has occurred and rejuvenation is recommended.

GEC sells replacement CuSo4 copper sulfate crystals (Part # 16906, .75 lbs) for half cells.  And, replacement electrode half cells (Part # RE-5C).

"Did You ALSO Know?"

Some Above-Ground Tank installations Require Protection

REGULATIONS: NFPA 58 2011 edition, Section 6.9.3.16

 Di-Electric Union

In the 2011 edition of NFPA 58 a new rule (6.9.3.16) will require underground metallic piping, tubing, or both that convey LP-Gas from a gas storage container shall require dielectric fittings at the building to electrically isolate it from the aboveground portion of the fixed piping system that enters the buildingThe dielectric fittings shall be installed above ground and outdoors.

It does not matter what type of tank is involved, above-ground or underground; if the installation utilizes underground metallic piping you are required to isolate the aboveground portion of fixed piping from the underground metallic piping or tubing at the building, above ground and outdoors. So all ABOVEGROUND and UNDERGROUND containers that use metallic piping or tubing, MUST incorporate a dielectric union at the house/building and it must be installed above ground and outdoors.

An alternative to utilization of dielectric unions in tank installations is to utilize non-metallic underground piping.  Polyethylene (PE) pipe and fittings that meet ASTM D2513 standard specifications can be used in lieu of copper or steel pipe and do not require the use of dielectric unions at the building.

PE PipeGEC sells dielectric unions for meeting this regulation and for use to isolate underground tanks from metallic underground piping.  We also carry a full line of PE pipe, fittings, couplings, risers, and accessories for various gas load size requirements.  If you need help sizing PE piping for extraordinary loads, contact one of our branches, we can run engineering analysis calculations for various gas load requirements, varying pressure requirements and pressure drops.

PERC Agricultural Equipment Rebates
$5,000 incentive available on new propane-fueled grain dryers

The Propane Education and Research Council is offering $5,000 incentive to farmers who upgrade their grain dryers.

With harvest season approaching, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is encouraging producers to upgrade their grain dryers by offering a $5,000 incentive through the Propane Farm Incentive Program.

Producers who purchase a new qualifying propane-fueled dryer from GSI Group (www.gsiag.com) or Mathews Co. (www.mathewscompany.com) now through the end of 2013 can apply for the incentive through PERC's nationwide research program. In exchange, producers report post-harvest performance data to PERC. Farmers can apply by visiting dealers or submitting an online application at www.agpropane.com/incentive.

"New propane-fueled grain dryers can be 30 to 50% more efficient than older models," says Mark Leitman, director of marketing at PERC. "These machines can produce huge energy savings for farmers, and we offer a $5,000 incentive on select new models."

The models eligible for the incentive include the GSI X-Stream series and Mathews Trilogy series dryers. PERC co-supported the development and testing of these machines.

The $5,000 incentive on propane-fueled grain dryers is available to qualified applicants on select models through 2013. The PERC program has already awarded more than $200,000 in incentives for irrigation engines.

For more information or to see a list of eligible equipment, please visit www.agpropane.com.
