  • Welcome to Spotlight, the weekly PCD student newsletter.  Spotlight will be emailed to all students on Tuesday afternoons and will also be archived on Symplicity (in the News Feed).  Most items will not be repeated in future issues of the newsletter, so be sure to read Spotlight every week to keep updated on all career-related news and information.
  • Advanced Legal Studies (ALS) runs programs frequently on different areas of the law.  These programs are attended by attorneys who practice in the areas of the specific presentations.  The programs are practical and give law students insight into the real world practice, as well as nuts and bolts of interesting and emerging areas of law.  These programs are free or at a minimal cost for students. These are great networking opportunities and wonderful ways to help you decide which area of the law most interests you.  Students are asked to register for programs in advance.  Some of the upcoming programs include: 
  • Visit the Judicial Clerkship and Internship Resource Center on Symplicity for information on judicial internships and post-graduate clerkships. Scroll down the News Feed and click on the link!
  • Interested in careers in government and public service? The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service can provide additional assistance. Sign up to receive their Rappaport Center Weekly Public Service Email, which includes information on programs, pro bono opportunities, and public service employment internship postings.
Upcoming PCD Programs  
  • Patent Law Forum - Wednesday, September 25, 3:30 to 6:00pm, Room 235 and Main Function Room.  Have a hard science background? Planning to sit for the patent bar while a law student? Come meet and mingle with area firms looking to meet you. The program will consist of a panel discussion from 3:45 to 4:30pm (Room 235 - room change) and information tables from 4:30 to 6:00pm (Main Function Room).  RSVP on SymplicityProgram flyer  
  • Public Interest & Government Diversity Fair - Wednesday, September 25, 5:30 to 7:00pm, Fish & Richardson, One Marina Park Drive, Boston.  Come network with public interest and government attorneys in the Boston-area and beyond.  Learn about internship and volunteer opportunities. This is a great way to meet employers before the MLSC Government & Public Interest recruitment events.   • From Suffolk Law to Fortune 200 General Counsel: How You, Too, Can Land Your Dream Job and Be Successful - Thursday, October 3, 12:00 to 2:00pm, Faculty Dining Room.  Speaker:  R.   • Ahead of the Game: An Evening with Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli - Monday, October 7, 5:30pm, Main Function Room.  Staying ahead of the game is the secret to success not only in hockey, but also in one's legal career.  Suffolk Law is dedicated to providing students the cutting-edge skills that will help them get ahead of the curve. Rappaport Center Programs and Announcements
  • Paid Summer Fellowships in Criminal Law: Drinan and McLaughlin Fellowships Information Session - Wednesday, September 25, 3:00 to 4:00pm, Room 205. 2LD/3LE students are eligible to apply for the Drinan and McLaughlin Fellowships which provide a $7,000 summer position in the criminal justice system. Fellows work in the offices of the United States Attorney, the Massachusetts Attorney General, the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Federal Public Defender, or within another government office of the criminal justice system. Learn more about these impressive Fellowships and hear from former Fellows! RSVP on Symplicity.  Program flyer  
  • Post-Graduate Fellowships Information Session - Thursday, September 26, 3:00 to 4:00pm, Room 265.  Post-graduate public interest fellowships offer a unique and valuable entry into public interest law. It is never too early to start preparing! Former Skadden Fellowship recipients, now Suffolk Law Professions, Sarah Boonin and Sharmila Murthy will provide insight into how to create a successful fellowship application.   • Training for Administrative Law Judges - Suffolk Law students are invited to attend a training for state administrative law judges given by the Division of Administrative Law Appeals on Thursday, September 26 from 2:00 to 4:00pm in Room 315. Topics for this training include writing administrative decisions in plain English and what to do when a witness invokes the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination in an administrative hearing. Seating is limited, so RSVP to the Rappaport Center if you would like to attend.
  • 2014 Grads: Apply for Fall 2014 Assistant District Attorney Positions in Middlesex County by October 1 - The Middlesex District Attorney's Office strong encourages applicants for entry-level assistant district attorney positions in the Fall of 2014 to submit their completed applications by October 1, 2013.  See http://middlesexda.com/careers for more information.
Diversity Announcements    
  • The Essex District Attorney's Office has a tradition of promoting workplace diversity. Diverse students are encouraged to consider an internship or a career as a prosecutor in their office. Visit their website to obtain contact information and learn more about the Essex District Attorney's Office.
Other Programs   
  • Brooks Brothers on Newbury Street is hosting an Evening of Networking for the WBA (members and non-members are welcome) on Thursday, September 26 from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  Join them for networking, food, drink, and a 15% discount. 10% of net sales will go to the WBA. Details are available on the WBA website.
  • Sterling Education Services is offering five free scholarship passes to their upcoming seminar Fundamentals of Landlord-Tenant Law on Tuesday, October 22 in Springfield, MA. Students get a day-long overview of this aspect of the law, a seminar manual, and an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys. Register through their website or by calling 715-855-0495.
  • MCLE is offering a program on Trying Divorce Cases which may be of interest to third-year law students wanting to pursue a career in family law.  The program will be held on Tuesday, October 22 in Plymouth and again on Friday, November 1 in Boston.  Details and registration information are available on their website

  • We continue to receive additions and changes to the summer/fall recruiting employers lists that were emailed to all returning students over the summer.  Several employers were recently added to the APPLY DIRECT Session as well as the new COLLECTION GOV/PI Session.  A complete list of changes and additions is available on the PCD website.

    • OCI6 Session - Wednesday, October 2

Several government programs have deadlines coming up in the next few weeks. You can view a list of these programs on the news feed section of your Symplicity home page. Details of these programs are provided in the Government Honors & Internship Handbook 2013-2014 (contact PCD for login information).  Many federal and state programs will be filled as soon as the ideal candidates are identified.  Get your applications in early for these employers!
