Inaugural YachtoberFest A Big Success
The inaugural YachtoberFest took place on the Foss Waterway esplanade on Oct. 4. A unique festival with a traditional Oktoberfest feel, YachtoberFest brought together boaters and landlubbers alike for a craft beer festival.
On Oct. 3 more than 60 boats arrived and moored in one of three zones in the Foss Waterway. That evening a welcome party was emceed by Chip Hanauer, "the Boat Guy," at the Social Bar & Grill. A good time was had by all as boaters and their crews got ready for Saturday's festival. Thanks to Dock Street Marina, Foss Landing Marine and Elliot Bay Marina for hosting a great welcome party.
Saturday was an early start for TWA volunteers and crews as the esplanade was transformed into Tacoma's little Germany. Tents, fences, and decorations quickly went up. Brewers arrived and set up their tents. By noon, it was time for City Councilmember Robert Thoms to tap the ceremonial first keg. Fifteen craft breweries and three local wineries poured their wares. Food vendors served sausage, pretzels, pizza and more to keep the revelers fed. Three local bands performed throughout the day.
Destiny Harbor Tours and the Sea Scouts operated a water taxi service on Friday and Saturday between the three moorage zones.
Did we mention it was a perfect, sunny day to throw a party in October?
By 6 p.m. it was time for the last call and the end to a fun day. TWA volunteers worked hard to return the esplanate to its original state.
More than 500 people attended our first YachtoberFest. TWA owes a big thank you to the YachtoberFest committee for its commitment: Dave Ralston, Craig Perry, Jayna Marshall, Lori Natucci, Philip Panagos and Gregg Reynolds.
Also, a special thank you to our corporate sponsors: Columbia Bank, Dock Street Marina, Global Marine Insurance, the Social Bar & Grill, the Seattle Boat Show, Marine Floats, Marine View Ventures, Point Ruston, Port of Tacoma, Larson's Power Boats Northwest, NW Yachtnet, Capital City Yacht Sales, Selden's Home Furnishings, Rock the Dock Pub & Grill, KGY 95.3 Oldies Radio, South Sound Country 96.9, and the Foss Waterway Development Authority. Thank you as well to T Town Apparel for its support with our merchandise.

Our Voices, Our Waterfront
TWA members and others share their life lessons, inspirations, and perspectives about Tacoma's working waterfront.
This month is the 17th installment
in the series: John Trueman,
TWA Board vice president.
Visit www.tacomawaterfront.org to read other installments of "Our Voices, Our Waterfront."
John Trueman, an experienced property appraiser and TWA Board vice president, has been evaluating land on the waterfront for 35 years. A business owner for 24 years, he has been actively involved with the Stadium Business District, the Old Town Business District, the Ruston Point Defiance Association, the Cross District Association, and Tacoma Neighborhoods Together.
Over the years he has observed the area surrounding Commencement Bay evolve from vacant or marginal warehouse buildings with dim futures to an appealing blend of upgraded marinas, office space, retail shops, condominiums, and apartments. This shift, from industrial use to attractive commercial and multi-family use, has been significant, especially on the Foss Waterway.
