Oldest Salmon Bake in Washington

The Browns Point Improvement Club will host its annual Original Browns Point Salmon Bake -- the oldest continuing salmon bake in Washington -- Aug. 2-3 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Browns Point Improvement Clubhouse Grounds.

Dinner includes Alaskan king salmon, corn on the cob, salad and roll. Hamburgers, hot dogs, clam chowder, and dessert are also available.

In addition to dinner, there will be local music, kid's games, and an art show.  A beer garden will be open until midnight Saturday.  The Points NE Historical Society will offer tours of the 1903 lightkeeper's cottage and the boathouse museum will be open from noon to 7 p.m. both days.

Tickets cost $21 for adults, $18 for seniors and active-duty military, $13 for children and $10 for chucks.

The Browns Point Improvement Club is located on the water next to the Browns Point Lighthouse on Ton A Wan Da NE Street.   A free shuttle service is available from the the Browns Point Elementary School.

The Browns Point Salmon Bake began in 1946 as a fundraiser for the clubhouse. Browns Point resident Jerry Meeker, a Puyallup Indian who is considered the father of Browns Point, was the first to teach residents to bake salmon over an open wood fire.

For more information, contact the Points NE Historical Society at (253) 927.2536.

Grants Benefit the Waterfront

Recently, two waterfront organizations received grants to further their operations:

Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation.  The C. Keith
Birkenfeld Memorial Trust, managed by The Seattle Foundation, awarded $500,000 to the Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation to support youth maritime training programs.  The funds will be used to help maintain three large historic vessels and to help renovate the Tacoma Youth Marine Center.

Point Defiance Park.  Metro ParksTacoma
received a $500,000 grant from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund which will enable development to begin on the 11-acre peninsula near the Tacoma Yacht Club.   Plans include a waterfront trail that will connect the park to Ruston Way, parking areas, restrooms and other amenities. The new park is scheduled to open in 2017.

National Heritage Area

South Sound members of Congress have introduced legislation to create a National Heritage Area along a 13-county section of Puget Sound and Washington's coastline.

If approved, this designation would be the first Northwest or West Coast heritage area outside of Alaska and would focus on the area's maritime history.

The legislation was introduced by Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Gig Harbor) and Rep. Denny Heck (D-Olympia).

Advocates of the legislation stress that it would not result in an increase in regulations but would help the area's many historic sites to market themselves for tourism.  It would also help local preservation efforts receive federal grants.

Derelict Vessel Prevention Program

Derelict vessels have long been a problem in local waters.  In 2013, the state legislation approved a one-time $4.5 million allowance to address some of the state's worst derelict vessels. While helpful, the state's efforts only addressed a vessel after it had sunk or caused an environmental issue.  More can be done to prevent these vessels in the first place.

The Puget Sound Partnership has created a grant to duplicate a program created in San Juan County.  The grant helped fund the start of a Derelict Vessel Prevention Program in Puget Sound, and Citizens for a Healthy Bay were awarded a grant for work within Pierce County.

The program consists of documenting potentially problematic vessels and contacting the owners to discuss the issues.  It also calls for community outreach to raise awareness of the problem.

Derelict vessels can be defined as:

  • Boats that seem to be illegally moored and have not moved in 30 days.
  • Boats that appear to be listing, leaning or have settled low in the water.
  • Boats that have unusual amounts of algae, moss, or other plants on them.
  • Boats that have not moved in some time but the bilge pump continues to run.
  • Boats that appear to be leaking fluids such as oil or fuel.
  • Boats that have severe external deterioration.
  • Boats that have drifted from their mootage and are in open water.
For more information or to report a derelict vessel, contact CHB at (253) 383.2429.

  Enjoy Local Lighthouses

If you have ever wondered what the life of a lighthouse keeper is like and are looking for a new vacation spot this summer, then Washington's lighthouses are the thing for you.

Washington has more lighthouses with rental facilities -- five -- than any other state on the west coast, and three of them are located around Commencement Bay.

Brown Point Lighthouse (47.30591, -122.44429).  Located at the entrance to Commencement Bay, the three-bedroom lighthouse keeper's cottage was built in 1903 and is on the National Historic Register.  The cottage is located in a lighthouse park so guests will also serve as honorary keepers during their stay.  Smarter Travel Magazine calls the Browns Point Lighthouse one of the ten best lighthouses to sleep in.  For rates and bookings, visit the Points NE Historical Society website  or contact
pointsnortheast@comcast.net, (253) 927.2536.

Point Robinson Lighthouse (47.38813, -122.37439).  Located on Vashon Island, this lighthouse offers two renovated keeper's cottages available for weekly or weekend rentals.  The lighhouse is a short drive from Vashon Town and is surrounded by a wooded park.  For rates and bookings, visit the Vashon Park District website or contact lodging@vashonparkdistrict.org, (206) 463-9602.

Point No Point Lighthouse (47.91218, -122.52677).  Located near Hansville on the Kitsap Peninsula, this was the first lighthouse built on Puget Sound.  Boasting panoramic views of Mount Baker, Seattle and Mount Rainier, the two-bedroom cottage is located next to a nature preserve.  The United States Lighthouse Society is also located on the site.  For rates and bookings, visit the United States Lighthouse Society website or contact jeff@uslhs.org, (415) 362.7255.

Raft Up! To Break The World Record

Boaters on Vashon Island are trying to break the world record for the most canoes and kayaks rafted up in one place and they need your help.

Raft Up! is a quirky and thoroughly Vashon event intended not only to have fun but to raise funds for Vashon Youth & Family Services, the island's primary human services agency.

Canoes and kayaks are needed to raft up in Quartermaster Harbor from 1:30 p.m. on August 17.  The curent world record is held by a town in Michigan and the residents of Vashon Island are determined to break it.

A concert and expanded camping opportunities will be available for those wanting to spend the weekend on Vashon Island.

Our Voices, Our Waterfront

TWA members and others are talking to writer
Sharon Babcock about enduring inspirations,
life lessons, and perspectives from their
experiences on
the working waterfront.

This month is the 14th installment in the series:  Loren Cohen, manager of Legal Affairs for Point Ruston and former TWA president.

On a recent warm summer evening, Loren Cohen and his wife walked along the Waterwalk, a nearly mile-long esplanade at the Point Ruston development that connects the Ruston Way promenade with Point Defiance Park.  Also on this scenic path were young adults holding hands, skateboarders, and a wide variety of people spilling into what Cohen calls Tacoma's backyard.
