Lightkeeper's Cottage and Museum Open for Season

The Browns Point lightkeeper's cottage and museum is now open for the summer and fall seasons.  The buildings are open Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours from noon to 7 p.m. on Aug. 2 and 3 for the Browns Point Salmon Bake.

The Saturday tours allow visitors to explore the cottage and museum as well as tour the boathouse and ring the original fog bell in the bell house.  Displays include vintage tools, a replica of a Coast Guard surfboat, a vintage kitchen, school room and sewing room.

This year's special exhibit is called "Remembering Ramona" which focuses on Ramona Hawthorne, the granddaughter of Jerry Meeker, who was a supporter of the Browns Point community and who died earlier this year.

The cottage is also available for rent.

Our Voices, Our Waterfront

TWA members and others are talking to writer Sharon Babcock about enduring inspirations, life lessons, and perspectives from their experiences
the working waterfront.

This month is the 12th installment in the series: John Parrott, president ot Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE).

"Residents of Alaska can buy a tomato, a fresh head of lettuce, or a gallon of milk because of the work we do," says John Parrott, president of Totem Ocean Trailer Express.  "Everything in a store comes off our ships, including the cars in the parking lot and the building itself.  Thirty years ago major retailers were not present in Alaska.  Now you can find a Fred Meyer or even a Cabellas -- an improved quality of life for the residents of this state.  It has all been brought in by water."
