A Message From Our New President
The New Year is slated to bring a lot of changes to the Tacoma Waterfront Association. Before we pin up the new calendar, I think it's important to thank a couple of folks for their contributions to TWA in 2013.
Roger Williams, as outgoing president, oversaw unprecedented growth in our organization. We accomplished several of our objectives under his watch, including the installation of the seaplane float and the first phase of the waterfront signage. TWA has had strong leadership since its inception and Roger continued to fill that role in 2013.
Sue Schaeffer finished up her duties as executive director for TWA. She has worn many different hats and wore them all very well. Sue has certainly left her handprint on our organization and we are glad that she will be continuing on as an active member.
So what's up for TWA in 2014? Plenty!
1) NEW HIRE: With Sue's departure, we saw the opportunity to make some changes in our administration and how we operate. After an active search, we hired Jayna Marshall as our new administrative director. Jayna joined us in September and has done an outstanding job of streamlining our communication and administration. We have a real winner in Jayna!
2) NEW LOOK: We have totally remodeled TWA's identity and now enjoy a new, contemporary logo. We have revamped the TWA website! It is contemporary, easy to navigate and will be TWA's dashboard going forward. Our Facebook and Twitter pages are very active and a will allow us to communicate with anybody, anytime!
3) BOARD UPDATES: We have made some additions and changes to our board of directors and the advisory board. New blood with new energy is a shot in the arm for any organization.
4) ACTION ITEMS AND SUPPORT INITIATIVES: We continue to concentrate on issues that will improve our 46 miles of waterfront and make it more accessible. Along with current action items, we continue to look for new initiatives that will do just that. Current action items can be found on the TWA the website.
5) GET INVOLVED: Nothing gets built before someone picks up a hammer! We need our members to be engaged in 2014. Please make it a point to attend our monthly meetings, held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Youth Marine Center. Consider being on a committee. Participate in TWA events. We need your involvement and resources to make a difference.
I am looking forward to serving as TWA president in 2014. I am passionate about our waterfront and I am excited about TWA's role in Tacoma/Pierce county.

The Vancouver Notch ... What and Where Is It?
On May 20, 1792, the HMS Discovery was anchored off Restoration Point on Bainbridge Island. Captain George Vancouver observed a conspicuous and very abrupt division along the southern slope of Mt. Rainier. This abrupt division is documented in Captain Vancouver's journal, on his chart and was sketched by midshipman John Sykes.
As director of the Peter Puget Memorial Project, I am in the process of officially naming this division the Vancouver Notch. On a clear day, you can look back into time and partake in Captain Vancouver's view of the Tacoma Waterfront and Mt. Rainier and see the abrupt division for yourself.

Support Goodwill ... Order Lunch!
Order lunch at our next monthly meeting and help support the Neighborhood Bistro at Goodwill. Not only does the Bistro's catering receive rave reviews for the quality of its food, this service directly impacts the lives of individuals in our community. The Neighborhood Bistro uses students from Goodwill's Culinary Skills Training Program and teaches them essential job skills. By ordering food from the Neighborhood Bistro you can literally "taste" your dollars at work!
Lunch oOrder forms will be included in the January meeting reminder. You will be able to choose from a variety of sandwiches or salads. Lunches will cost $11 and include a home-baked cookie, chips, bottled water and delivery.
The Neighborhood Bistro has graciously waived its usual minimum delivery request while we get the word out so we hope you will show your support so we can continue to offer this service.
As always, you are welcome to bring your own lunch to our meetings.

Noise from Port Construction
A Port of Tacoma construction project is expected to get a little noisy as contractors drive piling to upgrade the crane rails on Blair Terminal.
The project is expected to extend through early February, ending before the annual fish migration seasons begins in mid-February.
Work began in December to drive the first concrete piling on the terminal located on the Blair Waterway. Orion Marine Group of Tacoma plans to work from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays only. The pile driving will upgrade the crane rails as part of the port's 10-year strategic plan. Residents near this work might hear pounding noises as the 130 foot-long concrete pilings are set into position.
This project is one phase of the Blair Terminal upgrades approved by the Port Commission last year. It is intended to make strategic infrastructure investments that enhance the port's waterway and marine terminal infrastructures with the goal of creating opportunities to attract future business opportunities.

Our Voices, Our Waterfront
TWA members and others are talking to writer Sharon Babcock about enduring inspirations, life lessons, and perspectives from their experiences on the working waterfront.
This month is the eighth installment in the series: David Caylor, a senior at Stadium High School and a member of the Sea Scouts.
"Growing up, I rarely got to sit in the front seat of the family car," says David Caylor, senior at Stadium High School in Tacoma. Some years back, a tour of the engine room of the 90-foot Sea Scout training vessel Odyssey showed him that he could have opportunities to do things most kids cannot do.
Joining the program has provided chances for David and his peers to experience quality maritime skills training that leads to solid values, effective leadership teamwork, and concern for the environment. In its home at the Tacoma Youth Maritime Center, the program is a place for developing skills and confidence through training in leadership, citizenship, and personal fitness. Its intent is to instill strength of character and life skills, discipline, self-esteem, self-reliance, and problem-solving. Success is both personal and team-based. Programs include intensive navigation, safe boating, small engine repair, diesel mechanics, fiberglass repair and other related maritime skills.
David speaks about his experiences with candor.
