Support Goodwill ... Order Lunch!
We are reintroducing lunch delivery at our TWA meetings with the help of The Neighborhood Bistro at Goodwill. Not only does the Bistro's catering receive rave reviews for the quality of its lunches, your support of this service directly impacts the lives of individuals in our community. The Neighborhood Bistro uses students from Goodwill's Culinary Skills Training Program and teaches them essential job skills. By ordering food from the Neighborhood Bistro you can literally "taste" your dollars at work!
Order forms for lunch will be included in the December general meeting reminder. You will be able to choose from a variety of sandwiches or salads. Lunches will cost $11 and include a home-baked cookie, chips, bottled water and delivery.
The Neighborhood Bistro has graciously waived its usual minimum delivery request while we get the word out so we hope you will show your support so we can continue to offer this service.
As always, you are welcome to bring your own lunch to our meetings.

Maritime Industry Impact
A recent article in the Business Examiner reported that the maritime industry in Washington generated a total of $30 billion in direct, indirect and induced revenues last year and that it was responsible for more than 148,000 workers.
The figures come from a comprehensive study called the Washington State Maritime Cluster Economic Impact Study.
More than 35 regional leaders in the maritime sector were noted as participants of the study, including TWA member the Port of Tacoma.
The study cited a handful of statistics from the port including its status as tops among state ports in total vessel trade ($46 million in combines exports and imports in 2012). The study also recognized the port's status as the gateway to Alaska , with some 70 percent of cargo from the lower 48 states to The Last Frontier coming through the Port of Tacoma.

TWA Supports NMTA

Recently, TWA has taken some actions in support of TWA member the Northwest Marine Trades Association.
In October, TWA arranged a meeting with NMTA lobbyists from Tacoma and Pierce County to hear a presentation from Peter Schrappen, NMTA's director of government affairs. Peter's presentation was in support of legislation to amend existing Washington state law from 60 days to 180 days for a 10%-of-value permit for out-of-state licensed vessels of any size. Additional work is required for state legislature action in 2014.
Last month, Vice President Gregg Reynolds and Board Member Stan Selden traveled to Fort Lauderdale to help represent TWA at NMTA's booth at the 2013 International Boat Show by promoting and distributing information about the Puget Sound. TWA also submitted articles promoting Tacoma to yachters for NMTA's magazine The Great Pacific Northwest. This ongoing effort is geared to entice superyachts and vessels of any size to spend more cruising time visiting Tacoma and all of Puget Sound. TWA contributed $500 toward the cost of the NMTA booth at this event.

Our Voices, Our Waterfront
TWA members and others are talking to writer Sharon Babcock about enduring inspirations, life lessons, and perspectives from their experiences on the working waterfront.
This month is the seventh installment in the series: Joan Rutherford, long-time resident of arguably Tacoma's most unusual neighborhood: Salmon Beach.
Perhaps Tacoma's most secluded neighborhood, Salmon Beach consists of about 80 homes on stilts arranged in single file along the western shoreline of the Tacoma Narrows just south of Point Defiance. There are only two ways to get there: by boat or by walking down several hundred wooden steps from the parking lot at the top of the cliff to the homes located at water level.
Salmon Beach resident Joan Rutherford knows what it is like to live 8-16 feet above the water in one of Tacoma's most unique neighborhoods.
