Maritime Fest Celebrates 21st Year
Pirates, aspiring boat builders, avid sailors and children of all ages descended on the Foss Waterway Aug. 24 and 25 for the 21st Annual Maritime Fest. More than 4,000 people attended the two-day festival that celebrates Tacoma's working waterfront. The festival was under new management this year as former TWA Executive Director Sue Schaeffer stepped in to organize the event when no other group was willing to after the previous director retired. "I just felt that the festival had to go on, that it needed one more shot," Schaeffer said. In addition to crowd favorites such as the Quick & Dirty Boat Building Contest and Port of Tacoma tours, this year the festival revisited its roots to focus more on the maritime industry. Many more organizations participated with educational displays that helped festival-goers learn more about the waterfront and its special place in Tacoma's history.
The Foss Waterway Seaport was the center for all kids activities and a steady stream of people flowed into the museum to see the displays and exhibits.
More than 10 ships participated in the festival by offering free tours. Both the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain also gave festival-goers an opportunity to sail on Commencement Bay and participate in a "real" cannon battle.

Good grief -- are those goats on the Foss?
About five dozen goats were recently hard at work clearing vacant property of overgrown vegetation on the Foss Waterway.
The goats were from Rent-A-Ruminant and happily ate the blackberries and other weeds at three sites: Muni-Dock (1025 Dock St.), Site 8 (1123 Dock St.), and Central Park (1147 Dock St).
While the public was welcome to watch the goats, people were not allowed to touch or feed the animals. The goats worked behind an electrified fence and a goatherd was on duty at all times.

Sea Scouts End Summer on a High Note
A few days after returning from the summer cruises, the Sea Scouts participated in the Maritime Fest. In addition to having the Charles N. Curtis and the Odyssey available for tours, the scouts also presented the flag during the festival's Opening Ceremeony. The Walker Bay sail boats were also available to the public to go sailing.
Over the Labor Day weekend the scouts were once again hard at work helping support opening day of the Huskies football season. More than 100 boats tied up at the docks with many more anchored out for the opening of the new stadium. Scouts helped boats land, tie in and off-load those who were arriving from the anchored boats. It was a successful operation and the scouts achieved their goal of no one getting hurt.
What a wonderful way to end a very busy, and successful, summer.

Big Arrival at the Port
In July, the Port of Tacoma was host to the largest ship ever to call in at the port when the ZIM Djibouti docked at Washington United Terminals on the Blair Waterway.
The ZIM Djibouti is 1,145-feet-long and 150 feet wide. Her length stretches more than twice the diameter of the Tacoma Dome and almost twice the height of the Space Needle She can carry more than 10,000 20-foot sea containers and holds about 40 percent more cargo than most of the container ships that call in at the port.
"Ships continue to get larger, and we are ready for them," said John Wolfe, the port's chief executive officer. "We are fortunate to have naturally deep water."

Our Voices, Our Waterfront
TWA members and others are talking to writer Sharon Babc ock about enduring inspirations, life lessons, and perspectives from their experiences on the working waterfront. This month is the fifth installment in the series: Craig Perry, the manager of three marinas on Commencement Bay.
Craig Perry oversees the day-to-day operations of Delin Docks, Dock Street Marina, and Foss Landing Marina and Boat Storage on the Foss Waterway. The three marinas are owned by parent company Elliot Bay Marina, the largest privately held marina on the west coast. In that role, Craig experiences the practical side of boating on Commencement Bay, looking after hundreds of boats from 16 live-aboard vessels and 10 boats belonging to a dwindling fishing fleet to concierge boating with the ability to make hotel and mechanic reservations for visitors and provide them with maps and other local amenities.
