Are you an "Attender"?Become a Member!
On November 4th, PBF will hold its annual membership meeting reviewing the past year, planning for the new one and approving a new elder and budget. In order to vote, you MUST be a member of the church. Not sure if you are a member? Just email Heidi Evans at heidi.evans@peninsulabible.org. We found several people listed as "attenders" in our database and sent them an email last week.
If you are not a member, and would like to become "official," please attend our Fall New Members Dinner and Seminar set for October 21st at 4 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Childcare is provided. Only one meeting on one night is now required for membership. You will hear a brief history of the church, our beliefs, how we are governed, and take a tour of the building. You will also meet our Elders. At the end of the night, you will be asked if you would like to join the church. If so, you will need to sign this document and be welcomed into the Body of Church on October 28th.
Would you like to be included? Please email Heidi Evans here.

Joy at Jammin' in Your Jammies
Enjoying root beer floats and science experiments used to demonstrate lessons about the God, 64 kids had a less-than-peaceful, but certainly fun night at PBF last Friday. There were supervised by a crew of 44 able volunteers. The jammers also enjoyed stories by Max Lucado. Our PBF children were wonderful hosts, taking time to reach out to the community, ensuring nearly half of those attending were visitors to our church.

Guidelines as the fast continues...
At PBF, we are on a journey of discovery. A journey to listen to God's voice, to pray for the poor, especially the people of the Dominican Republic, and to join together as a body to completely renew our focus on Jesus.
As we have continued on this journey, we wanted to share a few additional guidelines:
- Fasting - it's about going without. We are in solidarity with the POOR of the DR. Many of us have enjoyed wonderful foods while on vacation in tropical climates. Rich sauces with coconut milk, for example, or dinners of shrimp. These foods may be eaten by the wealthy of the DR, they are not the staples eaten by the children on our prayer list. We are seeking to understand a tiny aspect of the struggle of hunger they face year after year. We don't expect anyone to harm their health, but if you're not experiencing hunger, cravings or boredom with this diet - you're probably not getting the point. Some poor people in the DR have access to coconut milk or fish and if you'd like to add those then perhaps trade your sugar packets for the coconut milk or the chicken for the fish. But try to keep your diet to 7 or 8 staples. Remember, for the people of the DR that extra food option may only be available for a season of the year. Literally food for thought. And let's be honest we'll take food anywhere we can get it these days! ;-)
- Spices are okay. If you would like to add some zest to your regimen with chili powder or pepper, be our guest. The key thing is to avoid adding sugar -- including corn syrup -- to your diet. We don't want to be Pharisees about this. If this fast makes you understand why spices were so precious in biblical culture, all the better. But if you are spending serious money in the specialty foods department, you might want to rethink. Bottom line, stay in keeping with walking in the shoes of a person in poverty, not comfort, but poverty.
- Eggs? They are up to you. Several people are choosing to eat eggs with the fast, reasoning that if we can eat chicken, we should be able to eat eggs. On doing the research for this program, we learned that the poor do not eat eggs because to do so would deprive one's family -- at some point in the future -- of an entire chicken. Our feeling is this. If you need additional protein, eggs are an acceptable option. If it keeps you able to participate in the fast, that's fine.
Learn more about the program on our web page.

Local Leaders host prayer breakfast
 | | PHIL DOWNER |
Kitsap Outreach invites members of our congregation and their friends to attend the 27th Annual Kitsap County Prayer Breakfast at 6:30 AM Thursday, October 18th, at the Silverdale Beach Hotel. The event is open to believers and nonbelievers alike.
Our own Pastor Brent James will be one of the program participants. The featured speaker is Phil Downer, a former machine gunner who served in Viet Nam with the United States Marine Corps in 1967 and 1968. He went on to pursue a career in law, but left his position as a senior partner in a mid-sized law firm to serve as President of the Christian Business Men's Committee for a decade. A popular national speaker, Phil has spoken at events such as Iron Sharpens Iron and Promise Keepers. Phil has been featured twice on Focus on the Family and, along with Mike Wilkins, is the subject of Day of Discovery's 2010 documentary "The War Within: Finding Hope for Post-Traumatic Stress."
Make a reservation for the event by mailing in a form, available Sunday at the Welcome Desk, or online at www.breakfastoutreach.org. Cost for the breakfast is $20 per person. For information call John Taylor at 360-779-8510 or our own elder Carl Johnson at 360-908-1124.

Congregational meeting set for Nov. 4th
 | | CARL JOHNSON |
Sure you can cast your ballot for president, but your vote can have even greater impact right here at PBF. Our members will review our annual budget, vote on the election of an elder to the board and get an overview of the upcoming year of the church. The meeting will be held at 4 PM Sunday, November 4th.
Carl Johnson will be seeking re-election to the Elder Board. Carl, and his wife Helen, have been members of PBF since 1985. In 1986, Carl was asked to join the Elder Board, where he served for 12 years, until 1998. It was also during that time that Carl served PBF as the Church Administrator in a part-time capacity. After a 10-year pause from service on the board, Carl was elected to a 4-year term in November 2008 with the option of serving a second 4-year term, if approved by the congregation.
During the 27 years that Carl & Helen have lived in Kitsap, they have been involved in many facets of the community. In 1985, Carl established Kitsap Outreach, which has held an annual Leadership Prayer Breakfast for the past 27 years. In 1991, both Carl & Helen committed themselves to ministry. Helen took on the responsibility as Director of the Pregnancy Resource Services of Kitsap County, and Carl began a marketplace ministry known as Marketplace CrossTalk, both of which continue to this day. It was also in 1991 that Carl served as the Vice Chairman of the Washington State Billy Graham Crusade, held in the Tacoma Dome and the Kingdome. Carl served as a member of the Central Kitsap School Board for 14 years, as well as the President of the Central Kitsap Community Council for 3 years. Here at PBF, Carl & Helen host a care group, and Carl is a co-teacher, along with Ted Berney, for the care group leaders. Carl is also the Community Relations Director for the Kitsap Alliance of Resources for Elders (KARE), and writes a monthly column on senior issues for the CK Reporter & Bremerton Patriot newspapers.
