PRESPER
THE PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:

When anyone mentions "weather in February", I tend to think drab, cold and ice, despite the fact I'm a Texan! However, having just returned from Scottsdale, I'm resetting my gauge to think sun, blue skies and 75 degrees. And I'll also be thinking of an incredibly large number of Arabian horses and visitors to see them! This year's 60th Jubilee seemed to have broken many records. As you may know, this was the first year the Scottsdale Show held classes specific to the Egyptian bloodlines. By all accounts, these classes for both Straight Egyptian horses as well as the Heritage classes were well received. It was a pleasure working with Taryl and others at the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona to have a Pyramid Society presence in conjunction with these classes, including a "Q's, A's and Cocktails" in the patrons' lounge overlooking the arena. Sincere gratitude is extended to our generous sponsors: Athala Arabians, Dreamco Arabians, Arabians at Egg & I, Kehilan Arabians, Sonrisa Farms, Thornewood Farm, and Witts End Arabians for making this possible. Also, a special "thank you" to our Pyramid Society members who showed their horses and congratulations to all those winners referenced in this newsletter. Our presence at this show will continue to grow as I believe these kinds of opportunities to showcase our Straight Egyptians in such high-profile venues prove valuable on innumerable levels.

Attending the Scottsdale Show only "wetted my appetite" for the Egyptian Event, to once again see the Egyptian Arabian horses and visit with like-minded members and devotees. And I'm hoping for the same kind of weather from June 2 - 6th in Kentucky that we had in Arizona in February!

Sincerely,

Bob Miars
President
The Pyramid Society

PS. I'm also sure you'll enjoy Judge Shawn Crews' perspective of these classes from center ring. See below.

Currently Trending: The Straight Egyptian Arabian!
by Shawn Crews

The atmosphere and setting of the show ring for the first ever Straight Egyptian competition in Scottsdale was electric! The tables and stands were full, and it was plain to see that everyone was having a great time...

Differing from the setup of other shows, the area around the Egyptian class show ring was extra-conducive for spectators to visit, and the resulting camaraderie of attending members was fun to watch. Everyone could see the horses up-close! From my view in center ring, it looked like the cocktail party in the V.I.P. Lounge, sponsored by Athala Arabians, Arabians at Egg & I, Dreamco Arabians, Kehilan Arabians, Sonrisa Farms, Thornewood Farm, and Witts End Arabians, was a big hit.

Personally, it was great to see so many Pyramid Society members in attendance and also to have Pyramid Society President Bob Miars on-hand to present the Society-sponsored Championship Garlands.

There were not as many entries in the classes for younger Straight Egyptians as there were for the aged classes, but, after what I saw, I am sure those will fill up nicely for next year. Overall, there were some great horses that represented the Straight Egyptian very well to the Scottsdale crowd. From a judge's perspective, three years and up all had to show together, making it tough to select from such a great group! My compliments go out to every fellow member who brought out your best. And, the handlers did a remarkable job as well!

I believe having a venue for our Egyptian horses at the world's largest Arabian horse show is extremely valuable. Not only is it a beautiful setting, but also this show lends visibility (especially adding in the huge number of viewers on their live feed) and credibility to Egyptian breeding programs. My prediction is that by having a reason to highlight our Straight Egyptian horses in Scottsdale, it will provide some interesting marketing opportunities in the future!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Madheen El Masr

PAT PLATZEK, EL MASR ARABIAN STUD

Our February Member Spotlight takes us to Stratford, WI. Here we get to know long-time member Pat Platzek of El Masr Arabian Stud and learn of her journey with Egyptian Arabian horses....

As recalled by Pat....

"Born in the city of Milwaukee in a very modest neighborhood, I had a few occasions to visit horse farms with my uncle. Though only 4 years old, my passion began. Years pass, limited budget, divorce, remarry, these life experiences leave a person more cautious and yet still devoted. I soon found myself mesmerized by the vision of *Ramses Fayek, luminous pure white with huge black eyes. He was like nothing I had seen before. Later Dr. Boshell purchased his Ramses herd and flew me to his farm to photograph his horses back in 1986. That was the year I believe his filly from our Fayek daughter Ramses Halla and sired by Prince Ibn Shaikh won the Filly Fantasia at the Event for a purse of $74,400. Yes, I cried.

Mikeen El Masr

Now forward a few generations. Our Event Reserve Champion Shahin El Masr (Anaza El Nizr 1st son) produced Shahara El Masr, who won the aged mare class with Joe Polo showing against several Champions and one National Top Ten Champion. Again I cried. She earned 7 -20's on the judges' cards! Shahara was a full sister to Sha Shayna, the dam of Mikeen El Masr who was my husband's greatest showing experience at the Egyptian Event. Mikeen not only won his class, but went on to win the ATH Championship both in 2012 & 2014. This time Dick cried...
