PRESPER
THE PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:

A confession: driving into the Kentucky Horse Park recently for a board meeting I had a flashback from years ago when I'd pull in for The Egyptian Event, anxious to show my horses and bask in the camaraderie of like-minded breeders. And once it was over, I'd head back to Texas and to business as usual, giving little additional thought about how it all got done or how much work it took to keep things on an even keel. Perhaps naivete is a good thing!

However, in my case, although I'm glad to have such - shall we say - inexperienced memories, I am grateful for that next stage: rolling up my sleeves and working for the betterment of this breeders' organization. Its history and achievements are recognized world-wide, and we all can share a sense of pride of ownership in our collective accomplishments. With that same pride, we become even more dedicated to continually moving it forward and improving opportunities for our members and exhibitors. I am confident that you'll share my sentiment that recent Board decisions are doing just that!

Please note the following changes to the 2015 Egyptian Event schedule:
  • Reinstatement of Straight Egyptian 3-year-old Extended Specialty futurity-enrolled classes (don't forget to nominate!)
  • Addition of open "Jackpot" Yearling Egyptian-Sired classes
  • Addition of open 2 & 3-year-old Egyptian-Sired classes
  • Addition of open 4 & Older Egyptian-Sired classes
  • Change in the Gelding Championship to include both Straight and Egyptian-Sired horses
  • Addition of a Native Costume demonstration
These classes were added to the schedule on a trial run. We now earnestly ask for your support to assure their continuance.

In addition, the  Golden Scarab Sweepstakes (GSS) Amateur-to-Handle Yearling classes for both colts and fillies will also begin in 2015 and will continue through 2017, at which time they will play out. Don't forget to nominate your GSS foals due in 2015! (NOTE: we will continue to accept 2014 GSS stallion nominations to qualify your 2015 breedings, but there will be no 2015 GSS stallion nominations.)

As always, the Board strives to make each Event better and better. Through additional showing opportunities, fresh arena updates, and more planned social and educational opportunities, we're confident your 2015 Egyptian Event experience will be both meaningful and enjoyable. However, it's up to you to help us build both our base and our excitement for things to come. Let's make our 35th annual Event one to remember!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Bob Miars
President
The Pyramid Society

MBRNEWSMEMBER NEWS AND EVENTS

Party at Round Mountain Arabians, to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children
On December 13th, Laura & Gene Graves invite you to visit Round Mountain Arabians in Abbeville, SC, for a cocktail party to benefit the Shriners Hospital For Children in Greenville, SC.

There will be raffles, door prizes, and a small silent auction, and all guests will be asked to bring a gift or monetary donation for the hospital. 100% of the proceeds and gifts collected from the party and guests will be donated to the hospital!

"The hospital is very excited, as are we and everyone we have talked with about this event," says Laura, "and our hope is to grow the party and next year have it in the barn with the horses in their stalls!. We are talking to the Shriners about the possibility of bringing horses to the hospital for the children to see next spring, as well. We want to share the magic of the horses and enhance the lives of the children - all for good!"

Misty Valley Arabians Leases New Mare
Danny & Carol Heithold of Misty Valley Arabians in Chickamauga, GA, are excited and proud to announce the lease of A Samia (Simeon Sadran x Cedars Samedi), in foal to A Illuminatus (Ansata Nile Emir x Kuy Shaihnya), for 2015, from Athala Arabians!

"We love the bloodlines of each of these exquisite individuals and believe they will produce one outstanding foal for our program," says Danny. "A Samia has four lines to the great Hanan, and A Illuminatus has some of the best Ansata breeding from his sire and a proven champion & champion-producing broodmare for a dam." A Samia arrived at Misty Valley late in October.

Danny concludes, "Thank you to Athala King for all of your support and faith in us, and for this incredible opportunity."

Wisconsin Egyptian Arabians in High Gear
Mark Rustebakke, Pyramid Society Membership Committee member serving the Wisconsin area with Jaleen Hacklander, recently shared some exciting news about Egyptian Arabians in the open show ring in Wisconsin!

"Straight Egyptians were "on the move" at the two-day All Breed Open Show held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Jefferson, WI on Labor Day Weekend. The show is increasingly a draw for Egyptian and Egyptian-sired Arabians from the Upper Midwest, and this year saw a record number of entries. Classes limited to Straight Egyptians have been sponsored there by the Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance for some years. This year, however, Egyptians were in the top ranks of every class they entered and were a substantial percentage of the total horses entered in the show."

Commenting on the show and the profile of Straight Egyptians at the show, WEAHA President Kent Mayfield said, "We've been committed to providing educational opportunities for breeders for many years, but we also believe that public outreach and promotion for the Egyptian and Egyptian-sired horses begins at the grassroots with a show like this. Besides it's great fun for all of us and the show benefits a good cause. A win-win combination."

"All of the money raised from the show's Silent Auction and a portion of the total show proceeds are donated to the non-profit Horse Power Healing Center, which offers equine-related activities for disabled youngsters in Southeastern Wisconsin. The All Breed Open Show is sponsored by Jericho Productions, Inc, with class sponsorships from the Morgan, Morab and Arabian communities."

Renaissance sincerely appreciates all of the breeders who see the incredible qualities that Kaream+ holds and have had the foresight to breed to him before leaving for the Middle East; his sons and daughters here in the United States will be treasured!"

Al Marzouk, an awesome future with this outstanding filly, and we look forward to her future success!"

The 2014 Arabian Foal Festival and Show in Santa Ynez, California
article by Christie Metz, Silver Maple Farm

The second annual Foal Show took place on the hottest weekend of the year in our Santa Ynez Valley, located in central California just north of Santa Barbara. However, everyone that came to the show had a good time, in spite of the heat. The show was held at the local Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center that overlooks the beautiful and tranquil, Refugio Mountains. Portable stalls provided much needed shade for the horses showing and for horses spending a night. Sofas made from hay bales and covered with nylon packing blankets provided seating, nestled under the shade of huge Pepper trees overlooking the arena. Peaked white tents along one side divided the main arena into two venues, the halter arena and the trail class course. These peaked tents also provided more seating for observers and one end was sectioned off for the judges' lounge.

Each class had a maximum of five horses with the exception of one class that had six horses. All the classes pinned a Champion and a Reserve with those horses returning to compete in the Gold, Silver and Bronze Championships on Sunday. Yearling fillies and colts along with two-year old fillies and geldings competed. Only amateur handlers were allowed to show, and all the horses that entered were required to have never competed at a show previously.

The Judges in 2014 were AHA President Cynthia Richardson of Colorado for Trail in Hand, Jeannine Boggs and Lori Conway from Minnesota and George "Z", Zbyszewski of Florida. The idea behind this concept came from Bart Van Buggenout, Manager of Aljassimya Farms with horses kept at One Hundred Oaks Farm in Santa Ynez. Bart brought the concept to the Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association members as a new project and they embraced it wholeheartedly. The Foal Festival has also rejuvenated our local club, spurring on other events to be organized and take place in this valley of Arabian horses. Events such as the Trail Ride and the Arabian Breeders Celebration and the Breeders Challenge are a reflection of this new energy.

Bart's goal for this show is to encourage breeders and owners of Arabians to enjoy themselves by exhibiting horses in a relaxed manner. The show provides a pleasant environment for amateurs to show young horses for the first time and not so far from home. Added to this year's schedule were the Gelding Futurity Class, Produce of Dam and Get of Sire Class, easily crowd favorites. Local dealers displayed their cars and many local vendors helped to sponsor the show... (Continued)

New 2014 Foals at Simeon Stud
Marion Richmond of Simeon Stud in Australia recently shared some great photos and a few updates about foaling season, which is in its height right now in Australia.

"At Simeon Stud this year we had 16 foals due," she states, "At the time of writing, 11 are on the ground and another five are due in the coming weeks. We have three by our young stallion, Simeon Sahron, a handsome bay colt from champion Simeon Shiraz (Asfour x Simeon Shuala), as well as a beautiful grey filly, a true gift. From her full sister Simeon Suzannah, we have a very pretty grey colt."

"Our Champion mare, Simeon Se (Asfour x Simeon Seda), has foaled an exquisite dark grey filly by Simeon Shifran (Asfour x Simeon Shavit). Simeon Shifran has also sired the first foal from our MB Mayal daughter, Simeon Sehora, an unbelievably lovely bay filly. Shifran has also sired another marvellous filly from the old mare Simeon Sayver, the first of our Anaza Bay Shahh daughters. Our Imperial Madaar daughter, Simeon Suria, also has an amazing filly by Simeon Shifran."

"Our MB Talmaar daughter, Simeon Shoshana, has her second grey filly in a row by Immesmerize... it is a match made in heaven. And our grand old Simeon Shavit (Anaza Bay Shahh x Simeon Safanad) has produced an image of 27 Ibn Galal V by her son, Simeon Shifran."

"Lastly, our bay stallion Mulayh Ibn Maareesa sired a lovely bay colt (pictured) from our precious Sukari daughter Simeon Sanaa."

WEAHA Focuses on Breeding at Fall Seminar
Mark Rustebakke, Pyramid Society Membership Committee representative for Wisconsin members along with Jaleen Hacklander, recently submitted news about the Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance's (WEAHA) Fall Seminar, held in Oconomowoc in October...

"For some, given the present economic environment, breeding has taken a back seat. For the Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance, however, it has moved front-and-center. Believing that it has never been more important for breeders of Egyptian Arabian horses to make wise, well-informed choices when making breeding decisions, the focus of its fall clinic was "Breeding for Excellence."

Breeders from across the Upper Midwest assembled at Olympia Resort on a bright October morning for a series of classroom sessions, first with Andrew Schmidt, DVM, a noted theriogenologist with the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital exploring current options in supported equine reproduction, drawing particular attention to the unique issues emerging in the Egyptian Arabian herd. Dan Burke, the principal nutritionist with Kalmbach-Tribute Feeds, was on hand to address questions of nutritional support in stallion and mare management in the months leading up to breeding, as well as for mares during gestation and lactation with an emphasis on the quality of forage in the Midwest.

Trainers Jessica Cole and Kevin Price led a lively discussion of "breeding for a purpose." They underscored the role of the breeder in maintaining the functional versatility and authentic character of the Egyptian Arabian.

The afternoon was spent at Wisconsin Equine Clinic in an extended clinic with live subjects. Drawing on a number of statements of breed standards, including those developed by The Pyramid Society, Kent Mayfield established a context for conformational assessment. Thereafter, stallions and mares were examined by attendees under the direction of Michigan State's John Shelle. Participants used a system of Estimated Breeding Values to make hypothetical breeding decisions for the mares and stallions presented.

The seminar and clinic were underwritten in part by grants from the Institute for the Desert Arabian Horse and Kalmbach-Tribute Feeds with logistic support from the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital. Plans are already underway for educational programs sponsored by WEAHA in 2015."
