THE PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:
Two key words I wish to share with you in this month's message; Yearbook and Membership.
Yearbook - This word instantly transports me back to Athens, Texas, and a place in time where I poured over the pages covering every activity of both my glory - and not so glory - days! I couldn't wait to get my annual high school Yearbook, as each publication chronicled my history, told my stories and recaptured the magic of time gone by. After all the moves, those Yearbooks continue to remain in my library today.
With this historical fondness, I was delighted that the Marketing & PR Committee chose to replace the annual Stallion Guide with an annual Pyramid Society Yearbook, beginning in 2014. I am confident it will be much like our own Yearbooks and remain in our libraries for years to come. Why am I so confident of this? Because of its design and content, created to capture our member activities, our horses, our programs, our accomplishments, in a beautiful, coffee-table-worthy publication. Please review the additional information included in this Chariot and plan to participate in our inaugural Pyramid Society Yearbook!
Membership - an overall reminder that we are joined together by our mutual passion, purpose and principles. Our 2015 membership year (note: we have shifted the member year to align with the calendar year, January 1 through December 31) is right around the corner, and, as a member-based organization, The Pyramid Society is dependent on each of you for playing your part in the future of our organization.
I encourage you to support our organization by participating to every degree possible. Share your passion for these Egyptian Arabian horses with your friends and business associates and encourage fellow members to become more actively involved with our Society. Let's make 2015 the largest on record for new and returning members and for active participation in our member-based programs. It will be a great start to making the next 45 years as strong as the first 45!
And lastly, our fall Board meeting will be held on November 1st. So, please read all upcoming Pyramid Society e-mails and other forms of communication for any and all relevant membership activity updates. Our goal is to keep each of you as well informed as possible.
Continue enjoying your horses and the friends you've made because of them!
Sincerely,
Bob Miars
President

IN MEMORIUM: Shary B. Akers
 |
Photograph by Lisa Abraham

The Pyramid Society is deeply grieved by the recent passing of Shary B. Akers on September 22, 2014. Shary was a long time equine artist and an unwavering supporter of The Pyramid Society.
Having raised and shown horses for most of her life, Shary had a special way of capturing in her work the intimate moments most precious to horse owners and breeders. Her work may be found across the world, and her booth was a staple at Arabian shows across the nation, and, notably, at the annual Egyptian Event.
It would be difficult to make a case for anything but Shary's marked involvement in the lives of Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts; her closest friends have reminded us that she attended every single Egyptian Event since the show's inception. Although Shary fought a courageous battle with cancer, she refused to miss our Event - even in 2014 - and she would not be defined by anything but her beautiful art.
Born in 1948, Shary lived her entire life with determination and vigor. She was quick to make new friends and was never shy to welcome you to her booth with a smile and a hug.
Shary, we hold you close to our hearts. Thank you for your passionate commitment you always showed to your work, your friends, and the Arabian horse.

CORRECTION: Count Zichy-Thyssen
In the last edition of The Chariot, we remembered Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen and his contributions to the breed and to The Egyptian Event. A few readers pointed out an error in our reporting that Richter MH was the 2000 Egyptian Event Supreme Champion Stallion, as he was actually the RESERVE Supreme Champion Stallion. We apologize for any confusion!

SEPTEMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Michael Guillory, White Stagg Arabians, Newnan, GA "The functions sponsored by the Pyramid Society have proven to be a great way to bring people with similar hopes, aspirations and interests together to share their knowledge and experiences in a close-knit, family atmosphere..."
 | Thee Evening Starr |
"I owe my involvement with The Pyramid Society and Straight Egyptians to my wife, Ellen," says Michael Guillory of White Stagg Arabians in Newnan, Georgia, who is in our Member Spotlight for September! Michael's wife, like so many others, began riding horses as a young girl. "She has been horse crazy since childhood," Mike states, "and to fulfill her lifelong desire to have her own horse, I took her to an Arabian presentation in 2006..."
As it turned out, the presentation Mike and Ellen attended was geared towards owning and breeding Straight Egyptians. "The breeding business did not appeal to Ellen, but it definitely piqued my interest! The horses I saw presented personified the glory of the breed," he recalls. "Although I had only minimal experience with horses, I decided then and there that I would like to give Straight Egyptian breeding a try. The more I studied the history of the Straight Egyptian, the more committed I became to starting my own breeding program. That was the genesis of White Stagg Arabians."
Michael Guillory's natural next step was to build a broodmare band. He contacted Mike Cimino of Colthill Crescent Arabians to learn more about the business and to discuss the possibility of purchasing one of his mares. At the same time, he continued to research other available mares, and his search ultimately put him into contact with Liz Salmon. "Through Liz, I purchased my first broodmare, the beautiful Thee Evening Starr ("Evie"), a Thee Desperado daughter, from Marty and Tonia Lockman in Georgia." The Lockmans introduced Guillory to Talaria Farms, and that is where he decided to board Evie and is also where he became acquainted with Mike Albertini.

Romanaa Shai with Michael Guillory
|
"My next mare acquisition, with guidance from Liz, was Romanaa Shai, a Simeon Shai granddaughter bred and owned by Susan Gilbert of Sumerlan Arabians. Susan and I struck up a friendship, and she became my mentor." Subsequently, Michael purchased a Ruminaja Fayez daughter, Sunaara, bred by Judy Guess, from Susan. Through Susan, he also became acquainted with Imperial Egyptian Stud and he ultimately purchased an Imtaarif daughter, Imselket, from Polly Schaefer. "That acquisition completed my broodmare band, and my next step was to implement my vision through my breedings."
Mike's program, like so many breeding programs, is still evolving, but along the way he has experienced some great confirmations of his vision. "The 2009 Egyptian Event was one that I will never forget," he reflects... (article is continued)

Fall Farm Tours a Huge Success for MEAHA and Participants
You've heard us say "Members make it happen," and that's certainly the case for the recent Midwest Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance (MEAHA) Fall Farm Tours, which consisted of three unique stops, each of them proud Pyramid Society member farms in addition to being active participants of the newly-formed regional alliance.
Allyson Nutt of Acorn Arabians in Grain Valley, MO, helped to organize and promote the event, and she couldn't be happier with how things went. "We all had a fantastic time enjoying friends, both old and new, food, and horses," she says, "I personally was able to meet people that most everyone else already knew but I had yet to meet. I would like to thank The Pyramid Society again for supporting our small group!"
The progressive gathering, which itself wasn't so small, welcomed nearly 50 attendees from throughout the region and beyond, including some brand new lovers of the breed. "Of particular note," Allyson reports, "were newcomers Dana and Mark LaMair from Pleasant Hope, MO. They recently purchased ten Straight Egyptians from the Serenity Arabians herd. They previously have showed Morgans and now they have jumped into our world with both feet!" According to Allyson, the person travelling the furthest was Augusta Hammock from California!
Gail Mailloux of Two Silos Farm in Rogersville, MO, the final stop on the tour, noted that the majority of the guests at her stop were new visitors. "This is great," she says, "Some had never seen an Egyptian Arabian before and didn't know about their history or rarity. Here, we talked about the origin of the Egyptian Arabian Horse, The Pyramid Society, and about characteristics of the Egyptian Arabian. Then, we presented mares with foals at their sides."
The 125 mile tour began at Marc and Debi Reed's Sand Rock Arabians, located not far from the shores of Missouri's sprawling Truman Lake in Deepwater. From there, it traveled east to Kristi and David George's Silver Lake Farm in Warsaw, at the other end of the lake. Finally, attendees headed south down the highway to Rogersville, home of Two Silos... (article is continued)

Hawaii Gets Inspired by Elizabeth McCall's Talking Straight Egyptian!
"It was one wonderful trip," exclaims Pyramid Society member and author Elizabeth Kaye McCall of Malibu, CA. McCall recently "found abundant Aloha" on the big island of Hawaii at the 7th Annual Hawaii Horse Expo, held in September at historic Pukalani Stables on the Parker Ranch in Waimea.
At the expo, Elizabeth previewed a new print edition of her children's book, RAJALIKA SPEAK, which features a talking Straight Egyptian horse and is based on her own real-life experience with her stallion,Rajali KA!
While in Hawaii, Elizabeth was also able to participate in some of the special occasions of the Expo, including a "blessing of the horses" ceremony conducted by Kahu Kealoha Sugiyama. Accompanying the ceremony was a special bouquet which included strands of mane from Rajali KA and other horses woven together with leaves and flowers.
As indicated by the photo above, Elizabeth and her delightful story were well received at the Expo. "The picture says 1,000 words," she muses, "as this keike (Hawaiian for "child") clearly reveals!"
