THE PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:
In this fast-paced day and age everyone is vying for our attention - including The Pyramid Society! I know I am not alone in saying that it's difficult to find the time to stop and read anything in its entirety due to the demands on our time. In fact, if you are reading this right now, I want to thank you for taking the time out of your day to focus on our Society. And, having your attention, I want to focus on our digital magazine entitled THE SOURCE. An important part of our mission remains education, and I am deeply proud of this magazine, dedicated to continuing education. If you haven't read or finished Volume 1 of THE SOURCE, released this Spring and sponsored by Dreamco Arabians, I encourage you to click here now and see what you missed (or, members, click here to download a PDF in the Members Only section of our website). I also want to take this opportunity to promote Volume 2, which has just been released! CLICK HERE to read it now. In Volume 2, we continue our "Founder Series" with two insightful articles on the lives of Pyramid Society founding members Jim Kline and Willis Flick, as well as several profiles on the horses that most influenced their programs - and many of ours. Volume 2 also features an "insider" perspective on the 34th annual Egyptian Event with a variety of colorful and story-telling photographs from several talented photographers and friends of The Pyramid Society. I think you will find the Event coverage in THE SOURCE to be unique and engaging. As a bonus, Volume 2 also includes the special "Heritage Guide" from this year's Egyptian Event Show Program, including an in-depth look at "The Import Groups of Gleannloch Farms & Their Impact on Today's Pedigrees." I found this year's Guide to be a valuable resource, as it gave me a better understanding of how far the Marshalls' legendary imports have reached into our own stables. I want to especially thank again our Legacy Sponsor, Alfala Stud, and also the 30 advertisers who made this special section possible again for a second year. Finally, we realize a digital publication may not be universally appealing, even when you find the topics helpful. I want to share with you our plans to print the core content of THE SOURCE in one anthology this fall, after Volume 3 is released (including the two final installments in our "Founder Series"). Of course, printing any publication carries a cost, and, for now, our plan is to offer this printed format as a pre-order opportunity to help us gauge future demand. If a printed compilation of SOURCE articles is something you would be interested in ordering this year, I encourage you to contact Kory at The Pyramid Society office, 859-231-0771 or kory@pyramidsociety.org, and he will add you to his list to be contacted directly when we begin to put this plan into action. And, if you are interested in underwriting such a publication, we would be pleased to hear from you, as well. Again, thank you for taking the time to read our publications, and thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I hope you enjoy THE SOURCE, Volume 2!
Sincerely,
Bob Miars
President

IN MEMORIUM: Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen
The Pyramid Society joins with the Arabian horse community worldwide in honoring the life of Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who passed away on August 13, 2014.
Count Federico and his Zichy-Thyssen Arabians will be fondly remembered for each and every "ZT" horse on pedigrees found today around the globe. A Pyramid Society Life Member since 1998, the Count was deeply entwined in the world of Egyptian Arabian breeding and was often found at The Egyptian Event, where he was no stranger to the blue ribbons. Names like ZT Shakjamara and ZT Faa'iq may bring back memories for long-time Event attendees.

Breeders who knew Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen remember much more than his horses; they remember his clarity of vision in breeding and also his knack for "rising to the occasion." In the photo here by Polly Knoll, taken at the 2000 Egyptian Event, Federico is pictured center with the Straight Egyptian stallion Richter MH, bred by Dr. Jody Cruz and sold to the Count - although he was not really for sale - shortly after taking the Supreme Champion Stallion title. Count Federico knew exactly the kind of horse he was looking for, and he placed a high value on authentic, desert type.
For your contributions to The Pyramid Society, The Egyptian Event, and the Egyptian Arabian horse, we will remember you for years to come. Farewell, and thank you Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen.

AUGUST MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Josh Lavorgna & Darren Hall, Kisra Arabian Stud, Westtown, NY "...Each first week in June is a family reunion and, no matter the other pressures in my life, I am committed to be in Lexington, Kentucky!"
|
Kisra Saafiyah (Imperial Mistaar X Ansata Farah by Ansata Hejazi)
|
Our August Member Spotlight takes us up the road to Westtown, New York, where we find Josh Lavorgna and Darren Hall's Kisra Arabian Stud...
Kisra Arabian Stud began when a teenager who owned a couple of quarter horses began taking dressage lessons. His dressage trainer leased stalls at a former Arabian breeding facility, Dorian Farm, owned by Dorian Weil. Although Dorian had, by this time, disbanded her comprehensive breeding facility, she had kept a few of her best mares to feed her passion through a small, personal breeding program. The teenager taking dressage lessons was blown away by the beauty and charisma of Dorian's horses and, though just 14 years old, he knew he had to make Arabian horses part of his life.
|
Kisra Ali Nakaar (Dorian Oran X Kisra Aliha Naericaa by Imperial Mistaar)
|
"I was that teenager," remarks Josh Lavorgna, excited to share his story. "Dorian became my mentor, and a few years later Marguerite Illing of Twin Brook Farm took over the reins, generously sharing her great wisdom with me. I was a sponge and, under the tutelage of these two knowledgeable women, I was well on my way to success."
Josh began attending the Pyramid Society's Egyptian Event while still in high school, under the advisement of his mentors. "Dorian and Marguerite both recommended it as a key element of my Arabian horse education, even before I owned my first Arabian," he recalls, "I loved the seminars, the people, and the sights. The members of The Pyramid Society became as close to me as family, always sharing their vast knowledge and their friendship. And in 1999, I began Kisra Arabian Stud on a wing and a prayer and with all the love and commitment (some might say naivete) of a young man with a mission."
The first Arabian mare Josh purchased was a Straight Egyptian by *Ben Malik who was tail female to *Bint Maisa El Saghira. He also counts himself fortunate to have leased a mare in 2000 from Marguerite Illing, and breeding to this mare yielded a filly for Kisra, JPL Aliha Nafara by Ali Barba and out of an Almwardy daughter who was tail female to *Magidaa. Nafara has become the foundation of Josh's breeding program, with daughters retained by Imperial Mistaar, Al Azraff Suhail PG, and, most recently, Kamal Ibn Adeed... (continued)

Arabliss Arabians Celebrates Success with AB Hanounah!
Nancy Bliss of Arabliss Arabians in Lebanon, KY, is excited for the opportunity to share about her experiences at the 2014 Egyptian Event and what's been happening since then...
"AB Hanounah, aka 'Lucy,' is back home at Arabliss Arabians now, enjoying the lush pastures that Kentucky is so well-known for," she writes, "All of my family and friends enjoyed the Egyptian Event this year, and we are all very proud of AB Hanounah's accomplishments and awards. As her owner and breeder, I was overwhelmed with pride to have been awarded one of the coveted Breeding Excellence Awards for the top five highest scoring yearling Futurity fillies! This is an award every small breeder dreams of but is afraid to hope for. But thanks to Tara Carpio, a great team at Belvedere Farm, a professional presentation by Ricardo Rivero, and, of course, AB Hanounah's quality and presence, we won one of this year's very special awards! I cannot thank everyone enough."
Nancy counts The Pyramid Society and staff, fellow members and exhibitors, and friends among those to be thanked, noting the many ways that the pre-Event preparation and expenditure has been paying off for her and her program. "It has been so worth it," she remarks, "The recognition my breeding program has received is priceless. I have already had an international guest visit my farm with a friend to spend the afternoon. They came to see my horses, and as an added treat, they met the rest of my family of four-legged friends... the Great Dane and Great Pyrenees took them a bit of getting used to!"
Nancy is also pleased to report that her granddaughter, Abby Murphy, past recipient of the Amal Bukra Junior Exhibitor award at the Event, has begun attending college this year at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. "She is playing Varsity Volleyball, and her team is the Lady Tigers. Abby is still an active part of the farm and she will be the next generation to care for Arabliss Arabians."
Finally, Nancy extends an open invitation to guests. "Just give me a call or send me a note, and to all of those we only see once a year in Lexington at the EE: see you next year!"
