Boost Your Horses' Immune Systems Naturally to Combat EHV-1by Jamie S. Roberts
There have been several outbreaks of EHV-1 in the U.S. this year, which have created a lot of concern, since this disease can be fatal. In addition, Western Medicine has no solutions in terms of vaccines or drugs to address this form of herpes. The best way to protect your horses is to support their immune system and overall health. Fortunately, "Mother Nature" has given us herbs and essential oils which have been scientifically studied for their antiviral and immune-supporting properties!
Antiviral herbs include Echinacea, Licorice Root, Lemon Balm (Melissa), Olive Leaf Extract and Oregano. These herbs are part of the Immune VRL blend from Equine Natural Care (ENC). It also contains superfoods like Bee Pollen and Wheatgrass powder which support the whole body. This is a great immune system support blend.
Essential oils also provide great defense against viruses... Young Living Oils such as Clove, Eucalyptus Blue, Exodus II, Melaleuca, Melissa, Oregano, Peppermint, Sandalwood, and Thieves are all good options. Immupower is also a good formula for supporting the immune system, as well as Ningxia Red. Thieves Cleaner is a great disinfectant for trailers and stalls. Equine Raindrop is also wonderful for supporting the immune system as well as the whole body.
If a horse is exhibiting neurological symptoms, the Neuro herb blend from ENC, as well as oils such as Helichrysum and Rutavala can be helpful. If you must travel, make sure you horse's immune system is supported with a low-stress environment, natural feeding program, herbs and essential oils. EHV-1 is very serious, so if you have any concerns, consider working closely with a holistically-minded veterinarian.
Jamie S. Roberts is a certified Equine Iridology Consultant, and also a Certified Nutrition and Herbal Consultant. She owns Nirvana Natural Nutrition, LLC, a natural health counseling business for horse and rider, with a focus on Iridology and Equine Energetic Evaluations™, combined with high quality nutrition, herb and essential oil products. Kristy Caswell, Infinity Egyptian Stud, LLC, Jarrettsville, MD
"...There are so many proud moments in the show ring, as well as friendships that I would not have if these beautiful horses were not part of my life..."
Our Member Spotlight for April/May brings us to the gates of Infinity Egyptian Stud, LLC, in Jarrettsville, MD, where Kristy Caswell spends her time focusing on Egyptian Arabian bloodlines!"My parents bought me my first pony before I could walk," Kristy recalls, "From that point on, I have always owned horses of one breed or another." In her childhood, Kristy got involved in hunter/jumper competition, but it wasn't until she was in high school that she fell in love with Arabians. "The versatility was what drew me to them, and then I found that they had an outstanding temperament."
Kristy elaborates, referring to herself as a "horse-crazy teenager" who had to know everything about the alluring Arabian... "and that was when I discovered the Egyptian Arabian and Imperial Egyptian Stud," she says, "I was very fortunate to live about 30 minutes away from Imperial. I loved Imperial's program and have decided to incorporate much of their blood into my own breeding program."
According to Caswell, owning and breeding Straight Egyptian Arabians has enriched her life and produced a wealth of memories. "There are so many proud moments in the show ring, as well as friendships that I would not have if these beautiful horses were not part of my life. Some of my dearest friend I have met through The Pyramid Society."
Kristy looks forward to the Egyptian Event every year loves showing her horses there! Want to know more? Catch her at this year's Event... it's just a few days away" (pictured left, Qadar Nadir Samar) Thank you Kristy for your ongoing support of The Pyramid Society.

Acorn Arabians Helps Coordinate First MEAHA Event!
Allyson Nutt of Acorn Arabians in Grain Valley, MO, writes to share about the new Midwest Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance's first ever Farm Tour, hosted on May 4th, 2014...
"We had beautiful weather and even more beautiful horses," she says, "A great time was had with an attendance of horse lovers, breeders of both Straight Egyptians and Egyptian Sired, as well as people that compete in the Class A show ring!"
This first farm tour featured Acorn Arabians, Klassic Arabians, and The Arabian Legends farms with Richesin Arabians. Farm owners presented their horses, answered questions, provided refreshments, and had drawings for prizes - including a stud service to The Arabian Legends' stallion Nakhda Karim Shah, won by Marc Reed of Sand Rock Arabians.
"The Pyramid Society graciously provided a Reference Handbook Volume XII which was won by a young lady that had attended the tour in search of a Straight Egyptian stallion for her Straight Egyptian mare!" Allyson shared that the winner of the drawing, Ms. Marissa Stark, is a veterinary student with a desire to breed Straight Egyptians, who found out about the event via Facebook. "We're looking forward to seeing her become a part of the Pyramid Society!"
The new MEAHA group is hosting a Fall Tour in September (watch our Events calendar for more information), with plans to visit some of the Egyptian Arabian farms in the Southern part of their area! Allyson concludes, "We want to thank the Pyramid Society for their support and their donation to MEAHA!"
And we want to thank Allyson and the other dedicated breeders in the Midwest for working hard to introduce the Straight Egyptian Horse to even more people.

Jadoube Ibn Lahab DMF Goes to Oakdale School
Debra Geiser of Dara Meadows Farm in Lexington, VA, shares about her stallion's recent opportunity to be a model Straight Egyptian at Oakdale School...
"On April 14, 2014, Jadoube went to Oakdale School in Oakdale, Tennessee for their annual Farm Day," writes Debra, "It was the first time any of the children had ever seen an Arabian horse! With laughter and excitement, the children were anxious to learn about this spectacular stallion. Jadoube was the perfect ambassador for the Arabian breed as he welcomed the children and adults to pet him and give him treats."
Much to the amusement of the teachers and parents, Debra reports, some of the children even thought Jadoube was so pretty that they asked, "is he a unicorn?" She concludes, "The staff and children went away with smiles and were thankful for the opportunity to meet this majestic Arabian stallion!"

Gleannloch Horses Pay a Visit to Rhita McNair in Pinehurst!
Rhita McNair of McNair Internationale in Pinehurst, TX, a former trainer for Gleannloch Farms, recently sent along these thoughts and well-wishes for the horses of Gleannloch:
"The year 2013 provided many blessings," writes Rhita, "including the arrival of five Gleannloch horses from the Barksdale ranch, Las Palmas, in July - when the ranch was sold. What a joy it was to have them in my life for a time!" The horses, which were owned by Doug Marshall III, departed McNair's farm in Pinehurst in April bound for David Myers' Renaissance Arabians in Ohio. Among them were three Ansata Hejazi granddaughters by Ansata Malik Shah, Al-Malihah (out of Sadik Sahbi), Azim-Alimah (out of Bint Bandaira), and Darwa-Isha (out of Asjah Bint Bandaira); one *Faleh granddaughter, Asjah Bint Bandaira (Asjah Ibn Faleh x Bandaira); and one gelding, Samia Sadek (Simeon Sedek x Bandaira).
"Because I had just had open heart surgery, I was not at first able to handle them, but by the time they left here, my helpers had started them under saddle. In fact, the gelding I had started for Doug, Sr. six years ago when he was living and in Canada! I sincerely wish David much success with the lovely mares added to his breeding program." Rhita is extremely thankful for the opportunity to care for some of the last horses to live at Las Palmas, which also afforded her the opportunity to visit with the Marshalls this spring, including Alexandra, Doug and his wife, Amrita, and their 10-month-old.
Rhita also passed along some family news, exclaiming, "I am now a great-grandmother FIVE times! Another McNair baby was born last Saturday, May 10, to Zach and Candice McNair. Katherine's daughter, age one, is already on a horse when her mother comes over to help. The others range in age from one to five."
Rhita McNair was recipient of The Pyramid Society Trustees' Award in 2012. Thank you, Rhita, for your continued involvement and contribution to the breed.

Asante' Arabians Welcomes Two New Foals, Anticipates Egyptian Event
Danny Cable and Walt Bagar of Asante' Arabians in Shelbyville, TN, are thrilled to introduce fellow breeders to the two latest arrivals at their farm...
"On March 15th, our Imperial Imdal+ son, Heir Born (x Amiri Jalee), saw the arrival of his first foal. Out of Saffire MA (our Ibn Safinaz daughter), this colt is classic in type and movement. When the vet came to check him, he told us we were really lucky to have such a fine colt, and that he had been clearly stamped by his sire. Then, on March 28th, our exquisite chestnut filly was born. She was sired by our Top Ten National Winner, KMF Ali Calypso (Calypso Dance x C Princess Rakia), and out of Infidels Angel, our Thee Infidel daughter. This beautiful filly, with her chiseled head and light and airy trot, will be a winner in both the show ring and in the breeding barn."
