PRESPERSPFEBRUARY PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:

While an overwhelming majority of members have directly expressed agreement with the recent Egyptian Event changes approved by the Board of Directors, there has also been some confusion about how these changes affect this year's Egyptian Event classes. A series of E-blasts have been published in March to help clarify these changes, and we apologize for the earlier confusion. Hopefully, this E-blast series and accompanying FAQ's will provide answers to all of your questions.

The blasts may be accessed directly on our Facebook page (facebook.com/ThePyramidSociety) and the accompanying FAQs in our Egyptian Event Updates list, a page you should bookmark, at www.pyramidsociety.org/egyptian-event/egyptian-event-updates.

Some of our members have justifiably expressed disappointment with the restricted participation for Egyptian Sired horses and have proposed the creation of separate classes and Championships. However, the Board's decisions were based on the historical Egyptian Sired level of participation at the Egyptian Event. For example, in 2013 the vast majority of Egyptian Sired entries were in the yearling and performance classes, and these opportunities still exist for futurity-enrolled participants, as well as for participation in the performance and amateur classes. The senior classes, on the other hand, had minimal participation. The Stallions 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 and 10 & over classes had a total of one (1) entry. The Mare Classes had: 4-5 (1 entry), 6-7 (1 entry), 8-9 (2 entries) and 10 & over (1 entry), for a total of five (5) entries. These numbers, representative of historical numbers in these classes, do not justify the creation of separate classes or Championships for them. The potential loss of entries is always a major concern, but neither increasing the cost nor holding one or two-horse classes would be enjoyable for exhibitors or a sound financial decision. The new, five-day schedule for the 2014 Egyptian Event will result in cost savings for all participants and The Pyramid Society.

Still, in our efforts to be practical, there are a few things we have neglected to say. For one, I wish to state that The Pyramid Society and your Board of Directors fully support Egyptian Sired breeders and will continue to explore opportunities and venues in which to do so. I encourage your direct involvement in a positive manner by assisting in the development of concepts for the promotion of the Egyptian Sired Arabian and based on sound economics for all parties. Please contact me directly with your ideas at bob@miarsarabians.com.

Finally, I want to again share about The Board of Directors' discussion concerning the Extended Specialty (3-4 year old) Futurities. These classes were deliberated at length as to whether they should be phased out or cancelled. The overriding argument was, with the likely duplication of entries in the Futurity and World classes and the declining Futurity participation, that the financial success of the Egyptian Event would be best achieved with a five-day schedule. This required eliminating these four non-sustainable classes.

I am confident you will experience a vibrant and memorable 2014 Egyptian Event celebrating Gleannloch Farms: The Legend and the Legacy, and I look forward to seeing you in Lexington in June. Let's not forget the truth behind our favorite catch-phrase: "it's more than just a horse show, it's an EVENT!"

Sincerely,

Bob Miars

Markel Partners with AHDF and The Pyramid Society to Sponsor New Arabian Horse Exhibit at the Explorium in Lexington, Kentucky

Richmond, VA, March 21, 2014 - Markel is excited to partner with the Arabian Horsemens Distress Fund (AHDF) and The Pyramid Society to sponsor a new Arabian Horse exhibit to be installed at the Explorium in Lexington, KY this spring.

"This is the perfect time for an Arabian exhibit to launch and to raise awareness for the Arabian horse as horses overall are experiencing declines. Our goal with the exhibit is to offer an interactive experience and tell the story of the Arabian horse. Arabians are known for their high spirit and relationship with humans. Our goal is that families that visit the Explorium of Lexington will then seek out a local Arabian farm to learn more about horse participation and ownership," stated Kimberly Douglas, Markel's Manager of the Arabian Practice.

This exhibit will be titled "Saddles Up!: The Versatile Arabian Horse" because it is the one breed that truly does it all. The Arabian is also the foundation of every light breed horse in the world, including the Thoroughbred. Home to the Kentucky Horse Park and The Arabian Horse Galleries, Lexington is the perfect place to launch this exhibit as families and children of all ages come to "The Horse Capital of the World" to connect to the horse... MBRSPOTMARCH MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Carol Maginn, Bear Creek Ranch, Lockhart, TX

"...I love showing our horses at the Egyptian Event and, of course, seeing all of my friends there year after year. And if it were not for the Egyptian Event, I'd never have found my initial breeding stock..."

For our March Member Spotlight, we'll get to know Carol Maginn of Bear Creek Ranch in Lockhart, TX, who encountered her first Arabian horse at the age of 4...

"Arabian horses have been the greatest joy in my life for many years," begins Carol, "My mother was a 4-H leader in New Jersey, and when I was 4, she bought our first Arabian mare, who was also 4 at the time." Carol showed in 4-H all through her youth until finally going to college an leaving horses behind. "Years later I joined the workforce, got married, and found something was missing in my life," she recalls, "I decided to get back into horses again. I headed out to a nearby barn where my husband Reilly and I lived in Austin, TX, and met two amazing trainers - Bob Battaglia and Russ Vento. Later, I visited Christie and Henry Metz in Florida and saw all of their beautiful Egyptian Arabians." Carol was captivated and began to think more and more about Egyptian horses. Shortly thereafter, back in Texas, Curt and Polly Rickart introduced Carol to a new stallion named Thee Shirazi. "He was a white Egyptian Arabian and was the most stunning horse I'd ever seen at that time - so exotic... different than other bloodlines. From that point on, I decided I must find an Egyptian Arabian of my own."

Carol Maginn first went to the Egyptian Event to learn more about Straight Egyptian Arabians, but she found her very first Egyptian mare there - Makhnifique KA, sired by Makhnificent KA and out of a Raquin daughter. She later purchased Prima Bella KA and KA Sultan Raqwa, and these horses became the foundation mares of the Bear Creek Ranch breeding program. "I love showing our horses at the Egyptian Event and, of course, seeing all of my friends there year after year. And if it were not for the Egyptian Event, I'd never have found my initial breeding stock! It's an amazing opportunity to see many horses in one, fun venue..." (CONTINUED)

Birthday of a Gleannloch Legend Celebrated
On February 22, 2014, Gail & Joe Mailloux of Two Silos Farm in Rogersville, MO,  were excited to celebrate another birthday with their senior stallion and former Salon du Cheval World Champion Hadidi (Norus x Hebet Allah x Morafic) .

"Hadidi was bred by Gleannloch Farms and was sold to Italy in the Final Legacy Sale as a two year-old," writes Gail Mailloux, "We are so grateful to have one of Gleannloch's crowning achievements here. It is very meaningful to us personally to own this horse, this year, as Egyptian breeders celebrate Gleannloch Farms: the Legend and the Legacy at this summer's Egyptian Event. Hadidi is an important piece of the Gleannloch story."

At a robust twenty-four years of age, Gail reports that Hadidi continues to be an active breeding stallion. "He spends each day turned out out in a paddock in the middle of the broodmare pasture where he reigns over his collection of mares and enjoys watching his children."

Look Out, Mr. Ed!
Member Elizabeth Kaye McCall is excited to share with the Egyptian Arabian community about her recently published children's e-book, RAJALIKA SPEAK, themed around her own talking Straight Egyptian horse, Rajalika.

In a recent interview published on Equimed.com, Elizabeth mused about the inspiration for her story... "I actually have a Straight Egyptian stallion and he "speaks on request." Started about three months after I got him in 2008. He's off-the-charts intelligent. I can ask him to "thank" the blacksmith for a nice job and he will. His latest is a "huh" sound that's embarrassingly like me. Anyway, someone I greatly respect, urged me to write a "talking horse" book. When I finally set the creative process in motion, it turned into a fictional piece told from the horse's perspective."

Elizabeth's submits that her book, which was illustrated by a talented, autistic teenager, is "inspired by the real-life story of a royally-bred Arabian stallion gone bad, who found redemption when he learned to talk!" She was thrilled to debut the story in February at Horse Expo Pomona in California, where she was a featured author in the "Book Corral." Available in the major E-Book stores online, Elizabeth hopes that RAJALIKA SPEAK will "speak" to fellow Egyptian Arabian enthusiasts!

Click here to read the full Equimed.com. Look for RAJALIKA SPEAK online, or contact Elizabeth McCall at elizmccall@earthlink.net.

An "In Your Tent" Moment
Danny Tucker of Gold Coin Arabians in Weatherford, TX, recently sent along a sweet, captured moment between his young colt, Al Dhahabia Don Gato, and the young son of Bryan and Melinda Jeffries of Lyday Farms...

"Don Gato is currently in training at Lyday, and recently, his trainer's wife, Melinda, snapped a cell phone photo that captured a lot of attention on Facebook," writes Danny. After several suggestions from friends to send the photo in to The Pyramid Society, he did, and we're excited to feature it right here in our Member News.

"I really think that the image embodies the "in your tent" disposition that we are so proud of and tout with our wonderful Arabian horses," Danny concludes. And we couldn't agree more.

Thanks to Danny, the Jeffries family, and Don Gato for the wonderful image!
