Straight Egyptian Sire Lines (2009)

by Joe Ferriss, from the 2010 Egyptian Stallion Guide.

"When one delves into the heritage of the Arabian breed, one soon discovers something unique. The breed's identity was built on its female line... This is quite different from established European breeds such as the Thoroughbred whose breeders often identified a horse from its patriarchy or sire line first..."

PRESPERSPDECEMBER PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Pyramid Society Members and Supporters:

It's hard to believe another year is drawing to a close. I have said it before, and I will say it again here: thank you for the honor and privilege of serving as your President. In this role, I have had the opportunity to meet with and hear from so many like-minded and passionate breeders and owners. I've been able to discuss with you first-hand about what's working, what's not working, and what we must do together to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Straight Egyptian horse. Our all-volunteer Board of Directors has met several times and has made decisions that I am confident will have a lasting and meaningful impact on this organization and its members, while still staying true to our founding principles.

As many of us do this time of year, I will soon be getting together with my close friends and family. I could say that these gatherings are about gift-giving or a sense of obligation, but that's not the case. The truth is we gather to celebrate being together. We reminisce about the past, and we dream about the future. I'd say, "it's more than just a holiday."

In some ways, these gatherings remind me of our annual Egyptian Event. We could imagine getting everyone together just for prize money or big honors. But we really make the effort to return year after year because we share a common bond and a common dream. "It's more than just a horse show," as we have announced to the world, "it's an EVENT."

The Society shared with you last month that the 2014 Egyptian Event will be honoring the legacy of Gleannloch Farms and its owners who played such a vital role in The Pyramid Society's founding. I wanted to let you know that you can read more about this theme in our 2014 Egyptian Stallion Guide, coming out in the December issue of Arabian Horse World magazine. The articles you find there are just the beginning of what I hope will be a year full of retrospective education, igniting a new passion for the Egyptian Arabian and guiding us to and through another exciting Egyptian Event.

So, as you are reflecting on your past year, I hope you do so with an eye on the things to come. We are the stewards of a breed with an amazing history and an even brighter future. On behalf of The Pyramid Society, I wish you the best of holidays and a truly prosperous 2014.

Sincerely,

Bob Miars

President
The Pyramid Society

Pyramid Society Members Show Off at the Katy, TX, Christmas Show

"Jack Frost was definitely nipping at our noses at the GCAHC Christmas Show," says Amanda Hammock, "but that didn't stop Region 9 Pyramid Society members from coming together to support the first-ever Straight Egyptian classes to be offered at this long-standing event." Despite some very ominous weather conditions that kept some members at home with their horses, Straight Egyptians composed about 10% of the show's total entries! "All things considered, the turnout was more than we ever expected."

On Saturday, December 7th, the Halter classes for Straight Egyptian fillies, mares, colts, and stallions commenced at the end of the morning session. Then, late that evening, our Egyptian athletes competed in the Western Pleasure and Hunter Pleasure performance classes. Each class was a success for Pyramid Society competitors and showcased the versatility and beauty of the Egyptian Arabian to show attendees. A special honor goes to the winners of these classes, and a collective 'thank you' goes to all of the owners, exhibitors, and supporters of these local Egyptian competitors!

The GCAHC Christmas Party was also held on Saturday evening. Each attending farm presented its own unique set of holiday foods, beverages, and decorations to be shared, and Region 9 Pyramid Society members joined the fun by hosting a Wine & Cheese Social. Many attendees asked to learn more about the Egyptian Arabian, providing the perfect setting for one-on-one education about our magnificent horses.

Augusta concludes, "We are looking forward to next year's show where we anticipate that the Straight Egyptian will once again be well represented!" Special thanks to our Region 9 members for their efforts to organize this Pyramid Society member presence.

The Arabian Horse: Nature's Creation and The Art of Breeding

by Dr. Hans Joachim Nagel, 2013

Newly available in 2013, The Arabian Horse is written by the highly-esteemed Dr. Hans Joachim Nagel of Katharinenhof Stud in Germany, a proud Life Member of The Pyramid Society.

The Arabian Horse will acquaint horse-lovers with the Arabian horse and its essential contributions to the English Thoroughbred, to the French Anglo-Arab and to the existence of all warmblood horses... How did it happen that this particular exotic horse, brought up in the deserts of Arabia, bred by nomads in one of the poorest environments on earth, could reach and play such an important role? And why did, again and again, some of the greatest horsepeople to ever live become fascinated by the Arabian? In this book, Nagel expertly tells the story of Arabian horses, where they come from, and where they acquired all their appreciated virtues.

SPECIALVERSEA SPECIAL GIFT OF VERSE
Thank you to Pyramid Society Member and Business Partner Polly J. Knoll for sending this poem to us several months ago. The author of the poem was inspired by Polly's book, Treasure's of a Lifetime, and thought she would enjoy these lines. As it turns out, we enjoyed them, too! We've been waiting for a special time to share it with you, and we hope it conjures up a special, wintertime "vision" of Arabian beauty.

THE VISION
by Lauren Isaken

She appeared in the distance.
A white apparition flickering in the starlight
And called me with an angel's song
Me, a helpless mortal in her kingdom of sand and spirit
Graceful like a gazelle, with iron beneath her arched neck and delicate bone
Her undulating form revealed porcelain-edged nostrils, the curve of her flank, a tail that flowed outward upon the wind as she materialized
Her gaze shot out at me-silky tendrils of it reaching toward me through space and time-freezing us both, while her essence surged from her deep, liquid, eyes and her soul merged with mine

MBRNEWSMEMBER NEWS

Idan Atiq Celebrates Last Foal of 2013 and Continued Show Ring Success for Atiq Abir
Tzviah Idan of Idan Atiq Arabian Stud in Israel recently shared with us about her latest new addition on the farm...

"We are both honored and thrilled to share a casual photo of our final foal of 2013, shown at two days old during her very first time outside, which was snapped some weeks ago," says Tzviah, "Still unnamed, this is an exquisite filly by Laheeb out of our maiden mare Atiq Sofhadereh (*Nader Al Jamal x Atiq Sofsof  [Al Maraam x *230 Ibn Galal I]),  tracing in tail-female to the Babolna foundation mare 9 Tamria, and representing a fourth generation of our breeding."

Tzviah notes that the Saluki in the foreground - 'Carro' - is a 6 month old pup bred in Russia, but tracing to desert hounds bred at Idan Atiq some years ago. "He was absolutely fascinated by this new arrival and made her his special charge from day one." The stud hopes to provide some more photos as this beautiful filly grows and matures.

Atiq Abir follows up 2013 Israeli Egyptian Event performance with more ribbons...

At his show ring debut at this year's Egyptian Event - Israel, Idan Atiq's home-bred 2010 colt Atiq Abir (*Nader Al Jamal x Atiq Ayla [Laheeb x *Alhambra B]) placed 2nd in his age group and went on to be awarded the title of Silver Medal Champion Colt. Tzviah reports, "One month later, at Israel's National Championship Show, Abir placed 3rd in a very tough class behind the eventual Gold and Silver Medal Colt champions, earning a higher score than he did at our Israeli Event."

"Abir's first foals will be on the ground next spring and we are grateful that our talented handler, Samer Owesat, will be showing Abir again during the 2014 show season."

An Update from the Arkansas Horse Tales Literacy Project
Laura Graves of Round Mountain Arabians and also representing the Horse Tales Literacy Project writes to share the most recent successes of the Springdale, AR, program, as published recently at NWAOnline:

Horse Program Brings 'The Black Stallion' To Life Springdale by Erin Spandorf

SPRINGDALE - Jasmine Still said hands-on learning about horses makes her even more excited to read "The Black Stallion" for school. Jasmine, 9, was one of 500 fourth-graders who gathered at Turnbow Elementary School Monday to learn about horses from members of the Horse Tales Literacy Project. Horse Tales is a national organization focused on encouraging children to read through the use of horses... All fourth-graders in the district have started a unit about characters in books, said Carrie Bradow, a language arts prekindergarten through fifth-grade teacher. The students are learning how a character or animal is represented differently in text than in real life. Each student also will read "The Black Stallion" by Walter Farley as part of the unit, Bradow said. The students will each receive their own copy of the book...

You can read the complete article HERE.

Laura shares that Horse Tales is also working towards a program in Mena, AR, and currently needs supporters! If you are interested in becoming involved in this new start, or in any aspect of this nationwide outreach organization, including the sharing of your horses with youth, please contact Laura Graves at laura.graves@horsetalesliteracy.org.
