A Salute to the 20 Leading Egyptian Mares
by Arlene Magid. Originally published in The Pyramid Report in October, 1989
There's an old Arab saying that there is no treasure like a mare in foal with a filly at her side.
Some fillies grow up to be outstanding producers themselves, as we discovered when investigating the leading Egyptian producers of champion offspring. Of the 20 mares in this study, eight are mother/daughter pairs, and a ninth is sired by a full brother. All of these mares are Straight Egyptian by Pyramid Society definition, and 10 of the 20 are imported. Three are all-Babson breeding, while the others combine Babson with Nazeer (two of the mares) or are all Nazeer-related (16 of the 20 carry lines to Nazeer, and four of the mares are his daughters)...

OCTOBER PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:
Thank you for following and reading The Pyramid Society's E-News in 2013. Although many of you are current members, there are still a number of loyal subscribers, past members, and future members who may not have received my October letter about upcoming changes to the organization. We feel these changes will impact The Pyramid Society and the Egyptian Arabian breeder community in a positive manner. I hope you will take the time to review my letter below, and please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. We're looking forward to serving you in 2014 with our ongoing efforts to promote the Egyptian Arabian horse, online and offline.
October 1, 2013
It is with trepidation, realism and optimism that I write this letter to you. Trepidation, as this letter addresses change and I realize change is often difficult; realism, that we cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results; and optimism, that we can work together to re-energize The Egyptian Event in a way that is both exciting and sustainable. And thus when reading this letter I ask you to bear in mind one wise philosopher's statement, "Things alter for the worse spontaneously, if they be not altered for the better designedly." It is with that "better design" in mind, our board has tackled some difficult issues which I wish to address with you. The Board has, after meticulous deliberation, determined the Egyptian Event Halter Championships should consist of Straight Egyptian Champions only. This decision will be applauded by those who have repeatedly expressed their belief that our Event champions should be Straight Egyptian. And, perhaps not surprisingly, this sentiment has come from both Straight and Egyptian Sired breeders and owners. This also dovetails with our long-range goal of establishing a World Championship for the Straight Egyptian with similar venues around the world.
Egyptian Sired horses may continue to participate at the Egyptian Event, beginning in 2014 in our EBC, GSS, Yearling Egyptian Sired Futurity (which will be replaced by GSS in 2015), two-year old Egyptian Sired Futurity until 2015, Amateur Halter and Performance Classes. The above class winners will be recognized as the winners in their respective classes but will not move forward to the Junior or Senior Halter Championships. Going forward, only Straight Egyptian entries will participate in the Junior and Senior Halter Championships. The Pyramid Society will continue to support and promote the Egyptian Sired horses through the Golden Scarab Sweepstakes (GSS) at the Egyptian Event and sponsorship of Egyptian Sired classes at other shows.
As referenced earlier in The Chariot, the time has come to re-energize the Egyptian Event, while maintaining and strengthening those things about the Event that we hold so dear. The economic realities of today must provide the courage for us to develop a new model for the Egyptian Event. The previous effort to shorten the Event did not achieve the desired result because no classes were eliminated. And thus as part of our ongoing policy, annual entries are being reviewed with the intent of eliminating classes that have 5 or fewer entries three years in a row. By making those adjustments, our schedule would be shortened and we'd still have the time for the educational and social aspects of our Event that continue to set our show apart.
In this same vein of streamlining the schedule, the decision was made to eliminate the 3 and 4 year-old Extended Specialty classes, as now, in most cases, this would be duplicity due to the fact only Straight Egyptians will be competing in the World Classes. And finally with our trending downward of futurity participants, the Straight Egyptian Yearling classes will be combined when there are fewer than 26 entries.
The Board will consider and approve the show schedule at our November Board Meeting, with the goal to preserve the qualities of this unique social event of Straight Egyptian Arabian breeders and the celebration of the Egyptian Arabian horse while confronting today's economic realities. In essence, we are at work, carefully rethinking, reenergizing, reevaluating, in our continued efforts to remain world-wide industry leaders. I will conclude with one final thought. Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow to reach new heights.
As always, both your continued support and involvement are crucial for growth to occur. Our organization has remained strong due to your steadfast support and loyalty and we thank you once again for both. I look forward to sharing our finalized plans with you after the November Board meeting.
Sincerely,
Bob MiarsPresidentThe Pyramid Society

An Introduction to New Board Member Omar Sakr
The Pyramid Society is pleased to welcome its first overseas Board Member, Omar Sakr, owner of Sakr Arabian Stud in Egypt and a proud Life Member of The Pyramid Society. Omar is a Co-Founder of The Egyptian Arabian Horse Pyramids Foundation in Egypt and the current Chairman of its Board of Trustees. He was also the President of the Egyptian Arabian Breeders Association for ten years.
Omar's journey with the Egyptian Arabian started 23 years ago when his research took him to the US, where hundreds of the finest Egyptian bloodlines had been imported from Egypt over the years. His landmark decision to go after those bloodlines and return them to his homeland would have a profound effect on the future of Egyptian Arabian Horse breeding in Egypt.
Sakr's breeding philosophy, course of action and determination energized the industry. With a discerning eye and a clear sight set on the essence of his ideal, Omar devoted himself to building his Sakr Arabian Stud farm with the finest stallions and mares. Horses bred by him have received worldwide acclaim, and his stud farm is considered one of the premier sources of the finest Egyptian horses in the industry.
He has been also responsible for educational projects and instrumental in educating new breeders. Two Reference Handbooks, patterned after the Pyramid Society's Reference Handbooks of Straight Egyptian Horses, were published in Egypt under his leadership.
Omar remains as enthusiastic and passionate about the breeding and preservation of the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse as when he purchased his first filly. He brings considerable experience, knowledge and valuable perspective to the Pyramid Society's governing body.
As a speaker at the 2010 National Breeders' Conference, and more recently alongside Judith Forbis during the 2013 Egyptian Event's keynote Pyramid Lecture, he delivers the same message: The Pyramid Society needs to extend its reach globally to fill the leadership vacuum in order to pull the Straight Egyptian community together towards one common vision - a shared unifying objective based on a foundation of knowledge and fair competition. This, he contends, will go a long way to address the misinformation and confusion among an increasingly international audience of Straight Egyptian horse breeders and owners.
With this goal in mind, The Egyptian Arabian Horse Pyramids Foundation is the first to enter into a strategic alliance with The Pyramid Society. Its purpose harmonizes with The Society's mission and is a first step in developing further worldwide cooperation among others who are like-minded and wish participate in a similar joint-venture.
Omar Sakr will serve a three year term on the Board and is looking forward to the continued success of The Pyramid Society. Most of all Omar hopes to connect and engage with fellow members to help them recognize their strengths and talents and discover new ways of using them for the preservation of the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse.

The Egyptian Breeders Classic 2013 Recap
The Egyptian Breeders Classic, held at DeShazer Arabians in Tomball, Texas on the last weekend in September, was a great success. As owner Hank states, "Sandy and I wanted to offer another place for straight Egyptian breeders to meet and show their horses." Planning a European style outdoor horse show, hay fields were transformed into horse stalls and arenas, with concession and vendor tents erected under one hundred year old oak trees. And quite magically guests were transported to a horse show somewhere in Europe rather the southern part of Texas...
Saturday evening, however, guests were treated to a full dose of Texas hospitality, complete with girls on horseback holding Texas flags and Will Rogers impersonator Mr. Will Roberts, a Cirque Du Soleil entertainer, on hand as a Texas cowboy. And for anyone daring enough to test their own cowboy skills, the long-horn Texan bull was there, just waiting to be ridden. Rounding out the entertainment were Anna Bishop and Judi Forbis, trying their hand as armadillo racers.
In addition to the delicious food and Texan-size hospitality, graciously provided by the DeShazers and their staff, breeders, owners and attendees were delighted to have the opportunity to get together to see Egyptian Arabians being showcased in such an incredible setting.
Special congratulations to the following winners:
- Egyptian Breeders Classic Senior Mare Champion was Makeda DB owned by Virginia Gober and shown by Luis Paniagua; Reserve Champion was TS Vivien Leigh owned by Joseph and Gail Mailloux and shown by Joe Polo.
- Egyptian Breeders Classic Junior Mare Champion was MM Arabica owned by Luis Miguel Muzquiz and shown by Benjamin Bogart; Reserve Champion was RNZ Edelite owned by Fanus Crous of New Zealand and shown by Ben Bogart.
- Egyptian Breeders Classic Senior Stallion Champion was Etaya Sudan Amir owned by Jennifer Parsons of Canada and shown by Ben Bogart; Reserve Champion was Qadar Jazil owned by Infinity Egyptian Stud LLC and shown by Ben Bogart.
- Egyptian Breeders Classic Junior Stallion Champion was Encore RCA owned by Rock Creek Arabians of Texas and shown by Luis Paniagua; Reserve Champion was Al Haadi BRDF owned by Jacque Battle and shown by Luis Paniagua.
Judges were good friends Mr. Rakan Al-Tobaishi from Saudi Arabia, Mr. Alaa Al-Roomi from Kuwait, Dr. Nasr Marei of Egypt and Mr. Pierre Groenen of Belgium.
The DeShazers would like to express their gratitude to all farms who attended and brought horses. The caliber of the horse in attendance was outstanding and this show of support was greatly appreciated. Additional gratitude and thanks to handlers David Botha, Kim Morgan, Joe Polo, Ben Bogart, Bryan Jeffries and others who did such a fine job.

Remembering Tyrone Lewis, Artist
The Pyramid Society has recently learned of the death of Tyrone Lewis, a highly-acclaimed artist whose work was featured in exclusive galleries around the country, including Santa Fe.
Tyrone has supported The Society for many years through generous donations to The Egyptian Event's annual Art Auction. Tyrone's most recent donation was in 2012 with "Nile Sunset," the beautiful oil pictured here, which was featured on the cover of The Pyramid Report in May, 2012.
Tyrone's family reports that he passed away peacefully. He lived in Arkansas where he and his wife Barbara, also an artist, bred Egyptian Arabians. The Pyramid Society joins with the Arabian horse community in offering the most sincere condolences to Barbara and to Tyrone's family.
More information on funeral arrangements and memorial gifts will be posted here as it becomes available to The Pyramid Society.

OCTOBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Marci & Larry Kirby, Bayou Angel Arabians, LLC, New Orleans, LA
"It is an honor and a true joy to have the opportunity to preserve the beauty, grace and exquisite quality that defines the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse..."
| Marci & Larry, David Reissig, and Mike Cimino with Lotus Capri, 2013 EE |
For our October Member Spotlight, we're catching the excitement of some newcomers to the breed as they add their experiences to the Straight Egyptian story. Based in New Orleans, LA, Marci & Larry Kirby are the proud principals of Bayou Angel Arabians, LLC. Their mission: to carry on the legacy of the Straight Egyptian Arabian...
While Larry describes himself as a horse-owner "convert," Marci can recall a long history with horses which takes her back to her teens. "I worked at a ranch where I helped prepare horses for English riding and served as an assistant instructor in jumping classes," she recalls, "I rode many different breeds there, but the horse I fell in love with was a 3/4 Arabian named Rebasha." Marci remembers Rebasha's movement, most of all... "smooth, like riding on a cloud."
These memories have stuck with Marci for years, eventually leading her and her husband to a conference at Colthill Crescent Arabians in 2011, where they both became extremely interested in the Straight Egyptian horse. "We began to investigate what would be involved in owning and breeding these bloodlines," says Larry, "I was a skeptic at first, but then, we took a trip to Arabians, Ltd. where we met the stallions. I was thoroughly impressed, and it completely flipped my attitude."
The Kirbys fell in love with the presence and stature of the late Mishaal HP, and, having met some of his offspring at Colthill Crescent, returned to work with Mike Cimino on the purchase of their first horse, a Mishaal HP daughter and now their foundation mare, Lotus Capri. Capri is a 2010 grey filly thoughtfully bred by Vicki & John Duzac to the mare TheeLotusMorningStarr (Thee Infidel x Lotus Wanisa (out of *Wanisa)). She currently remains standing at Colthill Crescent, where Marci & Larry come to visit and love on her every chance they get.
Owning Lotus Capri has led the Kirbys on a journey of several more firsts. "2013 was our first Egyptian Event and also the first show for Lotus Capri," recounts Marci, "We are so happy and proud of her results!" The filly took Reserve Champion Mare ATH with David Reissig; Champion Mare Three Years and Older AATH with David Reissig; and Top Five 3 Year Old Extended Specialty Straight Egyptian Fillies with Luis Paniagua. Aside from being in the winners' circle, The Egyptian Event was a highlight of the year for these newcomers. "We didn't realize how jam-packed the week would be; it was non-stop! It was a wonderful experience, one that wouldn't be happening without The Pyramid Society..." (CONTINUED)

My Yearling's Recovery: A Healing Story
Michelle Laucke of Vudu Magic Arabians in Stevens Point, WI, writes in with a message: Never give up hope when a horse is injured; the wounds will heal...
Michelle's recounts her foal's road to recovery from a laceration on her muzzle which required stitches and time. The photos in the gallery start at the day of the injury and follow her filly for the next two months.
On August 7th, 2013, Vudu Magic Arabians received a phone call from the farm where our horses had been moved just a week prior. The voice message said, "Shakirah went through the fence; we think she's okay, but she's bleeding from her forehead, and we feel the vet should come. We are cleaning up the wound now..."
So, I called my vet and authorized them to go to the stable and care for my injured yearling filly, VMA Malakah Shakirah. I received another call from the vet...
"Shakirah will need stitches, and we'll need to sedate her." Fear instantly crept into my stomach and heart.
"How bad is it?"
"It's not as bad as we thought at first"
'...not as bad as they thought,' my mind raced; how bad was it, really? I was so scared. I could not get to the farm, nor could I see the injury first hand...
That night my cell phone received a picture message with a photo of my filly's face, full of stitches. My heart sank; my all-black show filly with no white is going to have a huge scar all over her forehead, and I was advised that it may turn white because she had black hair.
I tried to be brave, but every day I cringed inside. "How will I show this lovely filly against horses that have perfect muzzles? Will the judges look past the scars? I would hope they do, but when you're neck-and-neck, will perfection win out?"
Knowing I had to see in person just how bad things were, I made a trek to see my beloved Shakirah...
KEEP READING TO SEE HOW SHAKIRAH IS DOING TODAY...
