AUGUST PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Pyramid Society Members and Egyptian Arabian Enthusiasts:
It is with pleasure that I advise you that Lisa Cifrese of Thornwood Farm, LLC., in Stockton, New Jersey, has been elected as Secretary of The Pyramid Society. As an officer, Lisa will join Becky, Majid and me on the Executive Committee, and we look forward to working with her in this new capacity. Lisa, elected to the board in 2011, was quickly put to work as Chair of the Membership Committee and she will continue to serve in that capacity as well.
I also take great pride in announcing that Omar Sakr has been elected to the Board of Directors to complete Bridgette Orwig's three year term. We congratulate Omar on being the first overseas member to serve in this capacity. Certainly, it seems most befitting that a native Egyptian with a long and successful history as a Straight Egyptian breeder fill this inaugural seat. Omar has been most influential in the international community and will be a tremendous asset as we continue to expand our presence in the international arena. Going forward, the goal will be to have at least one overseas member serving on our governing board. Please read the expanded article in next month's Chariot to learn more about Omar's philosophy and goals as a board member. Again, welcome Omar. With the elections of both Lisa and Omar to their new positions, I would be remiss to again not extend my most sincere appreciation to Bridgette Orwig for her exemplary service to our Society. She was one of the most dedicated and hardest working individuals I know, and she will be greatly missed in her leadership role on the Board. I also want to advise you that our Board met in earnest to begin reassessing and reevaluating every aspect of our Egyptian Event. All of us take pride in the fact that The Event has remained one of the most viable shows in the overall industry. We do, however, understand that it is both a long and expensive show for our exhibitors and attendees. We also realize that it is impossible to be all things to all people and that we have to continue asking ourselves one overarching question: "How can we make our Event even more fundamentally relevant to the Straight Egyptian breeder and owner?" We must not lose sight of our original mission of the Event being a breeders' showcase for the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse. We must also look at how we can serve our members and their horses most effectively in the larger community. In continually assessing this big picture and wrestling with these questions, changes will be inevitable; some, perhaps, difficult. However, as pledged when I became your President, I will keep you apprised of not only board decisions but the careful thought that went into those decisions. Our organization has remained viable because of its dedicated membership, and going forward, that commitment and support will continue to be both needed and appreciated. Sincerely,
Bob MiarsPresidentThe Pyramid Society

Correction to 2013 Egyptian Event Leading Sires & Dams
Arlene Magid-Williams recently wrote to The Pyramid Society to note an omission in her recent Leading Sires and Dams article, published in the August Pyramid Report (2013), distributed in Arabian Horse World magazine. The full text of the article may be found on page 66 of the Report.
Arlene writes, "Sometimes I make mistakes in my work and I want to be able to correct them as soon as I am made aware of them. My apologies to Brookhill Farm, LLC, for omitting this information on their stallion, BH Opening Statement, and the mare who produced his two winners, BH Thee Avicenna, from my 2013 Egyptian Event Leading Sires and Dams article."
CORRECTED TEXT:
Seven stallions and one mare won at least one halter title at this year's show and had offspring do the same. Five of the stallions also ranked on the leading halter sire list-a noteworthy achievement indeed.
BH Opening Statement (*Mishaal HP x Nordic Brittania) was Top Ten World Class Stallion 8-9 Years and sired second place Extended Specialty Four Year Old Mare Jaliaa SFA and Top Ten Yearling Futurity Colt Namid SFA, both out of the double Thee Desperado granddaughter BF Thee Avicenna.
13 of this year's 14 Leading Dams produced at least two halter winners, and one produced one halter and one performance winner. Four of the mares are daughters of Thee Desperado and three are daughters of Thee Infidel, a son of Thee Desperado.
Eight of this year's Leading Dams are making their first appearance here. Another Thee Infidel daughter, BF Thee Avicenna, is also a first time Leading Dam. BF Thee Avicenna is out of Thee Asriel Salaam (Thee Desperado x Tanjara RCA), so is a double granddaughter of Thee Desperado. BF Thee Avicenna was a 2008 Egyptian Event Top Ten World Class Mare 6-9 Years. Her winners this year are both by BH Opening Statement and were bred by Judy James: Top Ten Yearling Futurity Colt Namid SFA and second place Extended Specialty Four Year Old Mare Jaliaa SFA (who also had three 2012 Egyptian Event halter titles in extended specialty, world class and halter ATH).

AUGUST MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Daniel & Carol Heithold, Misty Valley Arabians, Chickamauga, GA
"For us, Egyptian Arabian horses have been the icing on the cake. They are so incredibly beautiful, loving, and have such an important history and connection to Judeo-Christian-Islamic heritage, we wanted to be a part of preserving them for future generations.."
| Danny & Carol Heithold with Thee Desert Rose at the 2011 Music City Show |
For our August Member Spotlight, we'll head to the Georgia-Tennessee border, where Dr. Daniel and Carol Heithold reside on their farm retreat and enjoy the in-the-tent lifestyle of tending to their Egyptian Arabians...
"My wife, Carol, and I both have very busy and stressful careers," writes Danny, "she in training for nurse anesthesia, and I as a surgeon. So when we purchased our farm, Misty Valley Arabians, we were looking for peace, natural beauty and stress reduction." With the addition of Egyptian Arabian horses into the equation, Danny and Carol got even more than they were expecting. "For us, Egyptian Arabian horses have been the icing on the cake. They are so incredibly beautiful, loving, and have such an important history and connection to Judeo-Christian-Islamic heritage, we wanted to be a part of preserving them for future generations."
The Heithold's first filly, Thee Desert Rose, or "Rosebud," is a daughter of Alixir out of a Thee Infidel daughter, Nellys Rose. She has seen many championships with professional handlers, as well as with Carol and Danny at the lead. "Probably the highlight of her show career came when she won "Produce of Dam" at The Event in 2012 with two of her champion offspring," Danny said.
After being thrilled by Thee Desert Rose in the show ring, the Heitholds have gone on to choose a few other mares for their program, all of top quality and pedigrees. "We are breeding our mares to carefully chosen outcross stallions from Egypt and Germany, as well as the US," states Dr. Heithold, "We are also shareholders in the Egyptian Event 2nd Leading Sire, Scapa, and have had wonderful results with him... Help Needed to Rebuild Home of SE Stallion Al Aassifah
Carey Niman of SE Legacy Bloodstock in Bell Buckle, TN, has recently launched a campaign on Fundly to help fellow Straight Egyptian Breeders Dara & Eric Fritz (Shailyx Egyptian Arabian Stud, ON, Canada) rebuild their barn & fence and purchase new equipment after a disasterous barn fire.
Shailyx is home of Al Aassifah, a 2005 Imperial Baarez son, who showed to 3rd in World Class 6 & 7 Year Old Stallions at the 2012 Egyptian Event. SE Legacy Bloodstock has entered into agreement to lease Al Aassifah in 2014, which brings the fire close to home for owners Carey and Charles Niman. According to Dara's first-hand account, intelligent and sensitive Al Aassifah's screams in the middle of the night were what first alerted the family to the burning barn...
"He never sounds like that, and I sat straight up for a few seconds and then jumped up, threw on shoes, and went racing outside while calling back to my husband, Eric, 'Something is wrong with Al Aassifah!'" Soon thereafter, Dara witnessed Al Aassifah's barn up in flames, with Al Aassifah - thankfully - in pasture and calling for help. While the stallion was safe, the fire proceeded to consume the barn, connecting pasture fencing, farm equipment, and the Fritz's 2013 hay crop.
The Fritzes found out all too quickly that their Homeowner's Insurance would not pay for much of this loss, and are now in the midst of a rocky road to recovery. It is from here that Carey decided to reach out to the wider Egyptian breeding community and ask for help via a trusted, secure fundraising website called Fundly. To date, nearly $2,000 has been raised towards the campaign's $20,000 goal to replace the uncovered losses at Shailyx.
If you are interested in helping Dara & Eric rebuild their barn for Al Aassifah and purchase feed and equipment to see them through the coming Winter, please visit the campaign using link below and consider making a donation. "You can donate as little as $10, and it all adds up," Carey states.

Dogwood Springs Arabians Presents at Texas Rodeo!
Jerel Kerby of Dogwood Springs Arabians in Daingerfield, TX, writes in with news about the farm's ongoing efforts to share the Arabian horse. Jerel and his son Jered Kerby went to the Naples, Texas Rodeo on Thursday, July 25th and Saturday, July 27th...
"Jered rode his gelding in the Arena Parade and all over the Rodeo grounds before and after on Thursday night," writes Jerel, "Then, on Saturday night, we took Zamill (Alaa Jabbar Ma Absha x DSA Hey Baby) (pictured above), our Straight Egyptian stallion who won Silver in Liberty in April at the Las Vegas Arabian World Cup Show, and we 'presented' him to the crowd of thousands."
The Kerbys also gave away hundreds of AHA magazines, coloring sheets for kids, and pamphlets showing how the different breeds are related and come through the Arabian horse. "I had a whole group of kids passing out the materials, as well as me. Now we need more for the next event we go to."

A Loving Goodbye to Bint Zaarina
Marilyn Thomas of Falconwood Legacy Bloodstock in Texarkana, TX, recently submitted this beautiful goodbye to the mare Bint Zaarina (Ruminaja Ali x Glorieta Zaarina)...
Falconwood Legacy Bloodstock said "goodbye" to our Senior Foundation Mare, BINT ZAARINA, on July 17th, 2013. Zaarina was a 1988 daughter of Ruminaja Ali. It was with heavy hearts that we lost such a treasure, unexpectedly. Zaarina was intelligent, sweet and majestic. She was a favorite of all that met her. Zaarina was cherished and she held a special place in our hearts... she was irreplaceable.
When we first saw Zaarina, we thought she was a charismatic, young stallion. She was big and bold, with a commanding presence. Zaarina always had "snort and blow" while showing-off in any arena. After finding out this incredible Arabian was a mare, it was only days until she arrived at Falconwood, her "Home for Life."
Zaarina was a multi-Champion Show Mare and garnered Champion World Class Mare, Five and Older, and Reserve Senior Champion Mare at the 1994 Egyptian Event. Zaarina qualified for Nationals competition at Region 9, winning the Blue. She went to Canadian Nationals and U. S. Nationals, sharing the trailer with Thee Desperado, where both were shown. These were "historical events" for us... (CONTINUED)

New Beginnings for C's Arabians
Cheryl Balmer of C's Arabians, a long-standing full-service breeding and training facility in Crockett, Texas, writes in to share how C's is getting a new face in more ways than one...
With great excitement, C's recently launched its brand new website: www.csarabians.com. Showcasing a beautiful new design, the website is full of information about C's professional services, stallions at stud, and sales offerings, with a focus on its halter and performance training divisions.
C's Arabians has also "turned up the heat" in performance by officially welcoming master horseman Andres Castaņo as its Head Trainer. Owner Cheryl Balmer recalls the first time she witnessed Andres' incredible gift for working with Arabians. "When we first heard about Andres, we were naturally skeptical. How could any trainer be so great while being completely ethical and respectful of the horses? Word of mouth wasn't enough for us, so we invited him to our farm to demonstrate his training techniques on one of our most challenging individuals."
Doubts vanished as Cheryl and her husband, Karl, watched in amazement as Andres revealed the truest form of horsemanship they'd ever seen... all with a horse he'd met only moments before... (CONTINUED)

Egyptian Horses Shine at Wisconsin Shows, Owners Band Together to Assist Farm in Need
Mark Rustebakke of Rustebakke Arabians and representing the Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance (WEAHA) recently submitted some news about ongoing outreach to Wisconsin Arabian horse owners...
On August 17th and 18th, WEAHA was pleased to sponsor Straight Egyptian horse classes at the Wisconsin Desert Horse Association (WDHA) Open Show in Oshkosh, WI, along with a silent auction benefiting Desert Vision Arabians, a Wisconsin farm which recently was struck by a devastating Tornado.
The Straight Egyptian classes at the show consisted of a Mares class and a Colts/Geldings class. In addition to these classes, Straight Egyptians also showed in several of the open classes at the show. Most notably, Qadar Nasib, a 2003 Richter MH son (x Zahara Keela x The Egyptian Prince), owned by Life Members Hadaya Arabians, LLC, took the Registered Stallions class.
As a part of the WDHA show, WEAHA also hosted a Silent Auction to benefit Randy and Dani Shaw of Desert Vision Arabians, who recently suffered a devastating loss at their farm after a Tornado swept through Hortonville, WI. The auction featured art by Tim Hagerty (Ancient Oaks Arabians) and a wide variety of items, such as wine, bags of feed, and even Straight Egyptian breedings donated by Carol Maginn (Bear Creek Ranch).
To raise even more funds and awareness, WEAHA will be carrying the horse breedings portion of their Silent Auction forward to the Jericho Productions Open Horse Show on August 31st and September 1st in Jefferson, WI, where the organization will also be sponsoring a Straight Egyptian Sport Horse in Hand class. WEAHA will also offer a High Point Straight Egyptian award at this show to encourage participation from local Egyptian breeders.
